I honestly have a soft spot for The Run. Maybe it's just the spectacle but I've always liked the "action blockbuster" angle of games. And while The Run certainly has issues, it has some appeal. At least to me.

I too have a certain love for The Run, the over-the-top action reminiscent of its time surely has some appeal in one way or another, too bad the PC port was awful, definitely deserves a second chance in the form of a remaster.

I thought the Run was decent as well It wasn’t an excellent game, I mean the game felt way too linear and short for a Need for Speed game and the customization was limited, but it makes up for that with just dumb popcorn movie fun That’s the charm to The Run, it’s just dumb fun for its action sequences(while illogical at times) are pretty badass to look at

The first nfs game i played was Hot Pursuit 2 , All the way to the newest game ( Nfs heat) But i really liked the run, it was really challenging and that made it fun for me. Not biased to the older games tho , i dont really have a favourite.

The Run is one of the best NFS games ever made. You need to appreciate the track design, physics, visual presentation and see that it is a culmination of pretty much everything the NFS series was going for

I've got to agree there, I've played pretty much every main NFS title and the only one I ever keep coming back to is The Run. Not to knock the other games, but I personally enjoy the straightforward linear story driven racing experience.

I honestly thought the Run looked really good on the Wii. The graphics could have used a little more contrast to make them sharper, but it was nice to see a racing game attempting a realistic look on the Wii rather than the cartoony graphics you'd normally get on the system.

@@r0b3rt_959 MW 5-1-0 is horrible. It can only be fun in really short bursts. It has infuriating and idoticly designed gameplay regarding the police. You cant destroy them and there is no point to bother with escaping them after races. Rubberband and handling are quite bad.

To be fair though, NFS Hot pursuit 2010 also features very open long stretch of highways, with most of them flat out at top speed. At least you have to dodge cops, drift in bends, and the roads are narrower.

This video is fascinating to me, because it inspired me to buy the PC version of the Run and...I actually really damn like the game? Like it's really fun and has those old-school NFS vibes and you can mostly just eyeroll your way through the story. It's also hard as nails.

0:22 that's kind of the point of the game. The NFS series couldn't just go on with their standard formula, it was sucked dry, so they had to experiment. Prostreet was a success, and it proved that "different" still could be good

tbh, the 3DS/Wii version of the game would have been dangerously close to be as good as the HD versions of the game if it had better level design and eased off on QTEs; the story was better than the HD versions IMO, the core driving mechanics are decent, the classic NFS remixes were bangers and the chases were damn fun.

When Firebrand closed one of their offices (Either Glasgow or Edinburgh, I can’t remember. Actually, they might’ve just been clearing old stock as, but this was a while ago now) I was responsible for dealing with their old PCs and Devkits. We’re talking PS2, Wii, DS, 3DS, PSP, as well as various test consoles. It was awesome, I was basically allowed to mess around with their old equipment and dig around in them. I remember finding files for Fast and Furious Showdown on a hard drive, I wiped it. I mean, the games were all trash, but the hardware was cool to play with

I've spent way too much time on the 3DS version, and not in a good way. I was desperate for a portable Need for Speed game, and the 3DS version of the Run was all I had at the time. My only reason for going back to the game would be for nostalgic purposes, but even so, I would have to be EXTREMELY bored to even think about going back to it. Also, I actually really love Mick Gordon's remixes of the 90s Need for Speed songs, but I hate how they're exclusive to the lesser versions of Need for Speed: The Run. They should've been in the HD versions as well. (or better yet, should've been in a better Need for Speed game)

This feels like GTA San Andreas "remastered" ports. Instead of porting the completely normal PC version, they instead port the toned-down mobile version to consoles.

So the Wii was an upgraded gamecube. NFS Most Wanted and Carbon worked fine on the Gamecube. Theres no reason that EA couldnt have just made Wii/PS2 exclusive NFS games that looked good and released alongside the HD versions. Why not have a NFS Nitro 2 and 3, instead of a jank version of a jank NFS game.

Good video, I appreciated your deep but concise dive into the development. Interesting how the 3DS has programmable shader effects but these don’t carry over to the Wii which was fully capable of these.

This game is the reason i noticed the effects of nostalgia when discussing a game. I mean, who would like this game without having created ""good memories"" with it? Sometimes when i feel bad i just boot up this exact Wii port of The Run, put in the last race to New York, hear the soundtrack and race through a six-lane highway again, just to remember those simple times when i accepted everything because i just wanted to break the monotony of the real life, and this happened again and again, speciaply during this f*cking pandemic. When i start playing a crappy game to feel happy for no reason, i notice there's something wrong here, and this is the effect of nostalgia. Even if the game isn't good, you like it because you liked the simpler times of your infancy

I vaguely remember receiving this game as a gift and playing it for what felt like 5 hours before deciding that it was fake. The box had the official cover art but the game consisted of me driving in a straight line on a highway escaping from black cars, which apparently were indestructible and and after a certain time passed they just crashed into you to make you lose and start over.

Bro I have a storytime with this game: My parents bought a Wii for Christmas in 2011, it was the Wii version with MKWii. Anyway, months later my brother came and talk about this nfs the run on the Wii, but the thing is that my brother know that the Wii version was not the same. We decided to rent the Wii version in a blockbuster that was a couple of blocks of my house. And wtf we liked the game so much that we also bought the game after. So good memories. Then i discovered the other versions (incluiding the 3DS version). I literally was so young and I enjoyed so much this game.

I always felt warm when I heard NFS The Run. To me, that wii version was perfect because it was my childhood. The comic strips to replace cutscenes made summer cool nights felt comfortable. However, when I searched it up, I found out there was a pc version. This whole time I was like "There was a pc version???" 5:18 was one of the hardest missions along with 5:25

I remember getting this game as a kid (I thought it was just a port of the PS3/360 version but with all the violence removed/censored becasue it was a 7 instead of an 18 lol) and found it pretty easy except for one time trial race in the challenge series. There was a 0.1 second difference between Bronze, Silver and Gold and I could barely get bronze with a Camaro, which is the best car in the class, why the devs decided to put it in the game I'll have no idea.

I very much disagree with you that The Run was a bad game. I absolutely loved the game. It had a short but sweet story that was full of action. The gameplay was gripping and the music kept you on edge. The levels may have been linear but they were detailed and we'll thought out. Although quick time events aren't ideal, they did help push the story in between segments. I think that The Run was the last good Need for Speed game. I respect your opinion of the game but I highly disagree with it. I guess we both have different tastes, which is fine.

Just to say you just use the wrong camera. Of course using third person view it will be wobbly so the solution is hood view. And you'll say the same thing about GTA IV's physics? Ironically these games have better weight ballance than the recent games. Take an example NFS Payback/Heat and GTA V and you'll how there is almost no weight balance.

Firebrand Game was a big chunk of my childhood as I enjoyed thier DS version of Need For Speed Nitro, I later tried out thier wii games like Hot Wheels Track Attack, and I somehow enjoyed thier DS version of Undercover.

I wouldn’t say The Run is absolutely terrible, but definitely has lots of flaws, and a very lackluster story, but for me The Run is a bit of an underrated gem though. Can’t speak for the Wii version though

So they made a game for a 8th generation handheld and then made a slightly enhanced port to a 7th gen home console. That is so unbelievably cursed. I would say it makes sense, but then again, relatively accurate 3DS conversions of Wiiu games also somehow exist, so I am just left confused at such a Nintendo hardware-moment.

Ya man I think you're opinion is extremely harsh, this game on the 360 was one of the best nfs games they made, I'd only put most wanted original and carbon above it but it's amazing. It's got amazing visuals for the time, remember when I got it my uncle thought it was a video not a game, that blew my mind back then. The cars genuinely control beautifully and physics are on par, way better then let's say, Rivals. The story is meh I admit but it's enjoyable. Police are so godamn fun to go against and honest just the race design and the set pieces are so tight because of the linear nature, they're so detailed and full of spectacular views and variety, I adore this game

Freaking loved the run for a short unique sprint experience. The cars handle really nicely imo and the speed is great. I played it on PS3 and really can't say it enough I love the run.

NO! The 3DS does NOT make this game make sense. This game fails at the bare minimum of what a racing game should be; Asphalt is better. If the PSP could do *Gran Turismo,* the 3DS could do a competent arcade racer instead of this boring, baffling FMV game.

The driving aspect, in my opinion, is ass clinchingly hard. The time trials are always at the skin of the teeth, the cars , including hypercars, handles like a dump truck, and you go 20-25 mph on every turn.

And, as a final insult... Undercover, Nitro and Hot Pursuit support the Wii Wheel, so "it really makes you feel like you're driving the car". The Run doesn't.

?? The Wii wheel is literally a piece of plastic, it doesn’t plug into or change the function of the remote at all. You could totally use it to play The Run.

nah, the run and a good driving model don't go together. criterion entries had much better handling and i hate brake to drift. ghost - idk, i didnt play heat and payback but im pretty sure heat has better driving model than the run does

What plagued The Run and a few games after that (Mass Effect Andromeda), was EA forcing all of their studios to use Frostbite. Frostbite was created for First Person Shooters. EA said “fuck that don’t waste money making an engine when we have one already.”

Using Frostbite for The Run was Black Box's choice. EA never forced them to use it for that game. Frostbite was also supposed to be the "EA engine" from the very beginning, so no it was never made only for FPS games. The engine hardly has any bearing on how good a game can be; pretty much everything falls into the hands of the developers and how well they can program various systems and features. All a game engine is there for is to have a capable renderer (which it's easily one of the best in terms of that) and to provide a general set of tools to ease/speed up certain aspects of development. For some reason people seem to be under the impression that a game engine is supposed to just hand you everything to make a game in a specific genre, judging by how many people think Frostbite is an "FPS engine." I've been reverse engineering most of Ghost's NFS games as well as The Run, and they share a hell of a lot in terms of the vehicle physics. Going back even further to games like ProStreet and Undercover will even show you that Black Box actually ported their vehicle physics from those games as a base for The Run. At the time Frostbite even used the same physics engine (Havok) as Undercover did, which makes that process much easier.

I remember almost getting the run on the wii instead of 360. I was at gamestop a couple years after the game released. I loved how cool it looked in the trailers, and wanted it so badly. So I went to my local gamestop to look for it and they didn't have it. They did however, have it on the wii ready to ship. I thought about it and almost bought it. My dad eventually convinced me to. Prior to this, I never saw gameplay on the wii version til after this night. I had no idea how much worst it was on it. I asked a cashier to order it, but suddenly it wasn't there. Did the other employee lie? Did this dude fuck up the search bar for his xvideos search engine? Who knows, but I did eventually find the game on 360 months after at the same gamestopnin store. Still love this game

I thought it was pretty funny that the video buffered for half a minute right before the quicktime hairpin stuff. That entire segment before and after sounds so depressing, even for NFS standards.

To be honest, I liked the Wii Version. But in the game, the most difficult car to get for free driving is the Dodge Challenger SRT8 and the NFS edition mustang, which is the most frustrating thing about the game.

I think undercover is the worst mainline game of the black box era, since it can barely seem to run functionally and the story is structured somewhat poorly. The Run seems to at least run, even though it's way too short.

@@brawler5760 I find 2015 alright, and surprisingly, I return to it pretty frequently. Maybe it's because it was my first nfs and I played it on PS4 when it was relatively stable, but I have a soft spot for it. If you wanna talk about the worst modern nfs, I point to payback, which infuriates me.

I hate the frostbite engine, you can barely accelerate which sucks cause of the number of hairpin turns you can't properly pass through, tie it with the rubber banding and it's almost unwinnable, unless you're lucky. The story gimmick is nice, sucks the execution is so lame

I am gonna say your pretty wrong sadly i mean i see it as the best version with a story that well at least has some serious threat unlike the 360 version and the final mission actually is a challenge and ost is good and theres a few speedrunners who like it that i know of

Ooof, you should see NFS Shift for the PSP. As a poor kid, I couldn't afford a good PC that could hand Shift, so my parents got me the PSP version, thinking it'd be the same. The disappointment I got was... Just play the game to find out.

I think I can safely say that Hot Wheels Track Attack and Need For Speed Nitro were the only games I ever played on the Wii, and if I'm brutally honest neither of them were too bad. The Wii port of the Run though... Eehhhh...

This game was my childhood, used to grind the 3DS missions all the time. I remember constantly restarting the Las Vegas level to get a specific song to play. It's interesting knowing that this game was buggy, cause I played this game for what felt like 100s of hours without running into a single glitch, guess it must just be the Wii version.
