A wonderful upgrade to any Classic Mini's suspension setup is a rear anti-roll bar. In this episode we review and show you how to install the 5/8" rear bar by Kent Auto Developments. We hope to give some guidance to anyone wondering what kind of effect this part would have on their handling. Short answer: there's a reason why all the classic mini racers use a rear anti-roll bar!

Thanks for another great video. A really nice demonstration of what the ARB does and how it works. Step by step install was fantastic. I bought one solely based on your vid. I don't think I would have bothered to put one on without the detailed explanation, before and after drive, and commentary. Too much of a race thing I thought. I definitely notice less roll, nose dive, and understeer in the turns. It's not crazy, but just sweetens the cornering up a bit. Keep the great content coming!

After curiosity I went to check where Stevestonmotorco business is located and to my surprise it is located near several "junkyards" for striping old cars and sell their parts and their metal. Odly enough the proposition here is to restore these beautifull cars. And what a job they do. Talented and professional service with some great videos to help spice things up. I wish the Mini scene around here in Portugal was anywhere near what you guys make of it. I would then seriously consider investing in one of these little cars just for the fun of it. They must be loads of fun to drive (specially considering the new wave of "anemic" full EV cars that more and more are being forced to the masses). No ECUs, air/fuel induction, mechanical distributor, screw/tappet valve adjustments, 3 pedals, 4 gears only, no power steering... They don´t make them like these anymore, for sure! Seing you drive that car made me feel I was actually enjoying driving one of them. Appreciate the interesting videos on these machines. 👍

Many years ago I had an old Volvo where I learned the difference of adding sway bars. That car needed both front and rear. The difference is amazing and was significant for each change. I assume based on your comments that it's really only needed on the rear? I do see a front bar available too. Also, 5/8 seems good but 'more is better' makes me wonder about the 3/4. Definitely on my shopping list now. Thanks again for another great vid.
@Stevestonmotorco
@Stevestonmotorco 3 жыл бұрын
It would depend on setup to get the slip angles you want and therefore understeer/oversteer tendencies. For the street, 5/8 rear bar is great. You would probably need to step up accordingly if you are increasing the lateral loads with stickier tires and pairing with a front bar. More isn't always better because adding too much rear bar would lead to too much oversteer and that would be slow (and probably scary) 😎

Way back when, I rallied a 1330 on tarmac (lsd, splits, s/c dropgears etc) with no anti-roll bar and loved the way the rear would hang out on fast corners, and understeer was only on too much throttle. What effect would a rear arb have had, especially at high speed on bumpy roads?

I understand it as the rear is making a greater contribution to the overall roll stiffness, so you lose grip at the rear but you gain more at the front as the back with it's roll centre at ground level has a greater influence on roll. I've used the progressive rear hydro bumpstops to achieve the same thing, it would be interesting to see a comparison as theoretically the bumpstops won't be stealing grip from the inside rear tyre on cornering. I think the real problem is the mini's rear roll centre height and skewed roll, I managed to get my rear roll centre higher and it's beautiful to drive...

@Stevestonmotorco

This one had a KAD short shifter. Ease of shifting is usually up to the condition of baulk rings in the transmission! But the KAD unit is very nice. Not sure about the 5 speeds as they usually require their own special shifter.

@stefanmages7926
@stefanmages7926 3 жыл бұрын
Really nice and professional explained but even if the effects of arb is totally correct the physics behind are different. It doesn’t lift the inner wheel. Furthermore it applies additional spring stiffness to the outer and due that it applies more load to it and changes the contribution between the axles. That doesn’t mean that the arb axles grip is reduced by definition. Only if it reaches its limit of load/ side force capabilities it starts sliding. Main point is that the stress of the outer front is reduced and the contribution between front and rear is more even and therefore the participation of the rear axle on cornering is increased.

An anti-roll bar allows more grip from the inside tire and by doing so increases total grip. Less body roll is also beneficial for the front because there is not much camber gain on compression to keep a good contact patch. Slight toe out helps turn in!
