I think this can be said for many waiata old and new, it's only very rare a waiata is broadcast outside of Aotearoa. Consider Lorde, whose most popular song calls into standard waiata call and return harmonies that sinks deep into a listeners heart when heard, if only they knew that maori have been applying these to our waiata for decades.

I LOVE this. I am Black American and I saw the TikTok dances of so many people from all over the world. This is what the world should be, not full of hate and racism. Thank you for making this and sharing Maori culture. On a side note, the sound reminds me of Kirk Franklin. Something like this should be done for all of the cultures of the world that we know precious little about. Thank you!

Maori have made a habit of producing songs that transcend New Zealand. I was born in 1999 so I'm too young to remember Poi E but do understand it reached an international audience. Maisey Rika and her song Tangaroa whakamautai reached an overseas audience too, clocking up millions of views. Maimoa did the same and now this catchy number has had some good success abroad. While I'm not Maori, i am very much a supporter of their culture here in Aotearoa. From your friendly Viking Kiwi. Edit: i also forgot to mention Stan Walker's Aotearoa song. That got a good amount of reception overseas.

This song is talking about the state highway 35 that runs along the East cape of New zealand - going from my home city of Gisborne (Māori name: Tairāwhiti or Te Tai Rāwhiti) - and the greater Gisborne area, heading up around to the small coastal towns and villages along the way. They mention a Paua pie in the song - Paua is what we Māori call Abalone, so a Abalone pie is what it is if you're wondering - not a fan of Paua myself lol, so cant say if it's any good. As he mentions at the start "First place to see the sun" - Gisborne/Tairāwhiti is the first official city in the world to see the sunrise.

I dont know why, but the maori culture is so inviting, colorful and warm. The way they open their culture to people and welcome us to their heritage. Though the world is big and full of misunderstand. The maori people seems too pure for this world. I love your culture!! Hoping that you could spread good vibes to even more people and influence other culture to open up :)

lol ... that isn't true Maori culture ! lol, the true Maoris would war with you upon arrival and then eat you, but hey, if your idea of culture is so easily shaped by a single youtube video, lol, so be it

@@rustyneedles3743 yup Maori warred when necessary as they saw it. Just like every people group you could name. Would you prefer that I cite the Viking expeditions, The War of the Roses, French Vs. English, Crusades, or about almost any place that European Exploration took them to eventually make war on the inhabitants they met in those far off lands? You have a very selective view of human history.

@@rustyneedles3743 Uhhh, true Māori culture ain't what you depicted either. Also, since when did we start passing judgement in the present onto a culture based on a biased eurocentric view of history? Prejudice and discrimination right there 🙄 The OPs statement is correct. NZders have never praised Māori, Māori have just continued to instill into their next generation who were privileged to be able to learn Māori, how to be a proud Māori. That generation is the change you see today, my generation. Kia kaua rawa koe e whakatakahi i te mana o tētahi atu. Te tuha i runga i te ingoa o te Māori, pffft.

@@rustyneedles3743 You're talking about way back in the 18th century though?! Where have you seen our Māori people war-ing it out in combat? Maurākau, powhiri/pohiri and whakatau don't count. We are peaceful and nurturing people who stand up when unrightfully provoked.

My mother and I took a roadtrip down statehighway 35 after hearing this song - the oceans and mountains are absolutely beautiful, the water is so stunning. All the communities along the highway are so amazing, we saw a couple horses riding down the beach and lots of children enjoying the summer day. I 100% recommend for more people to try this amazing place :) on a side note, it's sad to see many signs encouraging people to not litter down banks and we stopped by to try pick some of it up, please keep our country clean and beautiful!
