Kahurangi Solo - Cobb to Camp

Kahurangi National Park. A jewel in the crown of New Zealand outdoor wilderness and tramping locations.
In this video, Sam undertakes a solo trip into the stunning Cobb Reservoir area travelling to the end of the main Cobb River valley and visiting all the historic huts along the way before climbing up past the majestic Lake Cobb and beautiful Round Lake before then climbing high into the mountains and traversing back along the tops to Camp Lake, a large and isollated mountain tarn (lake) and settin up camp for the night.
After an enjoyable night tenting out with a great fire, Day 2 involved bush bashing 400m down an untracked mountain side to rejoin the valley floor track near Tent Hut.
This video provides regular topographic (topo) map updates of the trip so anyone looking to undertake a similar route can use these for guidance and planning.

Thanks. Great spot. Once on the tops you can camp just about anywhere up there. Hope you manage to get out there and do the loop.

The tent camp and Chaffey hut are nicely documented in Gerard Hindmarshes book "Kahurangi Stories" which fits well with the "Kahurangi" song on youtube.I very much enjoy your tramping videos .Tino Pai koe !

Cheers. Ive been chasing the first couple of books in Gerard Hindmarsh’s Kahurangi trilogy but they are out of print now so hard to find! Will keep looking.

There are cairns leading down to Camp Lake, and a trapline all the way down to Tent Camp. If you cant find the trapline follow the top of the spur down on the True right. An hour is what it took us geriatrics. Avoid the tree Dracophyllum if you bush-bash.

Thanks. I missed the cairns but I think I got on to the general line about half way down. I think it would be easier finding the way from the valley heading up rather than the way I did it but it all worked out ok. It’s actually worthy of a well marked track given the location is so good.

I was considering doing a hike through this area last time I was there however I was a little concerned about the long gravel road and whether my non-4WD and slightly gutless vehicle would be up for it. Good vid, I almost thought you'd busted in on someone having a midday snooze under that blue sleeping bag near the start. That would be great; "wakey wakey and smile for the camera!"

Thanks. There was no one in Chaffey Hut when I passed through on day 1. On day 2 I popped in again and spoke to the hunter who was staying there a few days. He had dislocated his shoulder the day before while hunting! Looked very painful. The road over to the Cobb is narrow and steep in some places. I’d recommend a 4WD or a 2WD that had decent power.
