I love how Paul describes that Connell and Marianne manage to protect their relationship and connection through all the ups and downs… it’s so well put. Because they’re times you get frustrated and wonder why they stay in touch. But Connell and Marianne recognize how special and rare what they have is and protect that connection.

I think her longing to be controlled definitely comes from her negative experiences that she has gone through in her family. She feels unloved and she doesn’t know what to do to be loved so she want to be controlled by the love interest. Like she told Connell, I’ll do anything for you. It’s a desperate desire to be loved.

i definitely have to agree with you. if you remember she had that one sentence where she said something along the lines of, “ i’ve been told i’m a bad person, so i think i deserve to be treated badly/violently/harshly.” all of the hatred that has been placed on her by her family, has been implanted in her, just not in a usual way. gosh sally did such a great and complex job with this book!

If you're looking for favourite characters who are, above all, good people then I'd have Lorraine as a clear first, then Niall (for Connell) and Joanna (for Marianne) tying for second and then Karen from school just missing out in the placings. I wouldn't include Peggy because of that one line "I know Jamie's a jerk, but he adores you". So what! He's horrible for her. And Peggy is a bit too much of the social butterfly type that Connell meets at Trinity and why he feels excluded. Threesomes and lines of coke! Great interview though! Well done!

No, she seems to genuinely enjoy discussing books. It doesn't feel like an advertisement in any of her book club discussions.

If the book and show weren't worthy of being promoted, then maybe. But the show in particular is brilliant, and is a very faithful adaptation although the book can be a tad more difficult to read. If it were 50 Shades for instance, I'd lose faith in her, but this show is brilliant.

@@pauldobson2529 I think the show was amazing because of obviously great source material but I think the director, Lenny Abrahamson, does such a wonderful job of adapting books onto the screen. He directed the movie Room which absolutely wrecked me. It was amazing. When I heard he was directing the hulu series Normal People I knew it would be great.
