This is a movie reaction to my first time watching a "classic" 90s adventure movie: The Mummy from 1999, directed by Stephen Sommers. This movie is pure FUN all around and I had a really great time with this! Brendan Fraser is a king and I love how much he brought to this role and performance as Rick. Rachel Weisz is a queen and I adored how passionate Evy is. All the side characters were a hoot as well. Make sure to stick around to the end of this video for my full thoughts and review and thank you so much for watching!

Great reaction as always. Don't forget The Mummy Returns. It wraps this story up and is just as fun as this one. Tad more serious, but I think both movies balance themselves out.

@@AFMountaineer2000 It's a fairly common theory, he's more or less suicidal, or at least doesn't particularly care about his own life, is a good shot and a functional alcoholic. To quote the tumblr post: "Of course he’s going to not take anything seriously. Of course he can shoot. The drinking, the skittishness, the recklessness, the sense of ‘keeping your head down’, the scepticism about traditional heroism…. [...] When Rick says ‘I’ve had worse (situation/odds)’ and Jonathan replies “ Me too”. That’s probably true. [...] Sort of makes the line where Evie’s scolding him for drinking/messing about a lot darker… Evie: Have you no respect for the dead? Jonathan: Of course I do, but sometimes I’d rather like to join them." I mean, the same goes for Rick, he's also badly coping with ptsd, even Benny probably. He just happens to also be an a-hole. :P

The scene where Brendon is hung, he almost died on that one, he really was choking. If you like Brendon, you must see Blast from the Past. You’ll fall hopelessly in love. The movie is worth it for the dance scene alone. And it’s a star studded cast, you’ll recognize several actors in it.

My late wife and I caught this one in the movie theatre upon its release and we both enjoyed it much and his other performances dating back to "Encino Man". Debbie was employed @ a CPA firm for a time and Brendan Fraser happened to be one of the clients there; she met up w/ him on several occasions when he'd pop into the office and @ one point in time she even secured his autograph (this being about the point when this film premiered), and so for me that notepad-sized sheet of paper is now a special possession I've "inherited" from her.

One of the funniest details I've seen anyone point out about this movie is that the eyes the mummy took were from a guy with horrible vision (he was crawling around looking for his glasses), which could explain why he thought Evie was his lover, or at least looked more like her than she really does.

The striking a match on anything and everything to light it was possible (as long as you get enough friction) with the earliest matches. I don't know when exactly it changed, but after a certain point they removed one of the necessary ingredients from the heads of the matches and put it in the patches on the boxes so matches can't ignite from friction alone. Because what happens if you shake a box of matches a bit too much, and they ignite each other...

As a longtime fan of this movie, I enjoyed your reaction very much! Also, I once watched the movie with the directors' commentary, and in the scene in which Brendan was a prisoner in a cage, they started joking "It's George! George of Jungle!" I laughed so hard I almost passed out at that point! Edited to add: 15:45 Riding a camel is pretty interesting, actually. I got to experience it for the first time at a zoo a couple of years ago. It's very different from riding a horse, as you tend to sway from side to side rather than bumping up and down. 35:42 According to the directors, John Hanna (Jonathan) wanted to look his best for his shirtless scene, so he worked out hard in a weight room the day before it was filmed. I don't know if his one-day workout improved his physique at all, but the directors said that he had trouble shooting the scene because he had very sore muscles!

Hey, this has nothing to do with the reaction, but I get angular cheilitis often. Angular cheilitis is pretty easy to treat without going to a doctor. My best advice would be to go to your local CVS and talk to a pharmacist about a combination of topical creams that you can use to get rid of it. I typically get a mix of cortisone cream and jock itch cream (specifically one with clotrimazole). Apply it consistently twice a day for a week, and it should heal up. Hope this helps.

@47:00 It's probably not really possible, but it's the sort of thing that feels possible. Basically, instead of having the two main chemical components of matches in different areas (the match head and the lighting strip), Strike Anyway matches mixed them together. Striking against any rough surface, like a brick wall, causes the chemicals to mix and ignite. You can still get them, but they're hard to find because this is a huge fire hazard. So the scene is a visual joke about Ardeth Bay's chiseled jawline and rough beard. It would have been more realistic for Rick to strike the match on any of the many stone objects around them.

The director said in the commentary they had something ( I can't remember what) taped to the side of Ardeth's face for that trick. You can see his hair is pulled to the side if you look closely. lol

@@kaiielle true, they do look identical. But I think Locusts are slightly bigger than grasshoppers

Great reaction, to a great flick. Definitely agree that the effects largely hold up. I was in high school in 2001, when this movie and DVDs were both pretty new. I was in a Film Studies class and this movie was the focus of our Visual Effects unit. My teacher played all the special features for us, they broke down all the practical effects and CG, which was all super cutting edge. It's definitely up there with Jurassic Park and Terminator 2 for early uses of CG that still looks good today, where so many others from that era really don't.

The computer graphics for The Mummy were cutting edge. Industrial Light & Magic really pushed themselves with the character modeling and particle physics. The sandstorm was groundbreaking at the time because it required so much computer power to render it. Yes, with "strike anywhere" matches, it's possible to light a match against a cheek, but the cheek needs to be rough to provide friction. I was an old trick back in the day to light a match on the side of an unshaven face. It hurts and takes practice... not worth it lol
