I'd like to add as a side note that I have always noticed from years ago, some of, no most of the best fighters in the dojos I've trained in, were really good or great at kata, particularly in Kyokushinkai. This I believe stems from the good form, economy of motion and body rhythm. I really feel this. Osu.

Everything funakoshi described can all be put under one single principle. Tai Ji(Duality) principle. Other principles that should be considered six harmonies movement, four extensions(for power generation), three sections (of the body), and more. Kata isn't the end all be all. But once you've integrated all these principles and can express them quickly and clearly you can abandon the Kata. Shaolin claims to focus on a taolu/Kata is a mistake. For a time it's good. But it's meant to be discarded. Also karate seems to not have the two person forms. Those contains serious dodging/attacking drills and meant to apply the principles under pressure. My best advice to modern karate guys is that to learn yi quan (taikiken), seek the Xinyiba guys(ALOT of yi quan guys went to shaolin looking for this), and find the southern China versions of the Kata. Incense shop fist, white crane fist. I've stuck with seisan and naihanchi alone for about 23 years now. I'm a traditional Shaolin guy now. But I still dig.

Training Kata/taolu is a very important part holistic training. They are not for fighting. They are for expressing principles. I have spent years of my life understanding the old method of training forms. I just traveled out to Switzerland to meet with a man who trains at a prestigious school in shaolin to learn more about form training. It was worth the time and money. I get into arguments and am accused of being disrespectful. But ALOT of people don't seem to understand how to train the forms. Kata contests are so far from the source it's not worth doing it.
