The solar panel will power the radio in bright sunlight, but will not charge the internal battery, except for a very low trickle. It will maintain a fully-charged battery by trickle-charging, after charging by another means, preferably a 6V source. NOAA is part of the National Weather service in the U.S.A. to listen to weather information and forecasts, and the Alert feature is to receive emergency signals in case of hurricanes, earthquakes, tornado, etc. The "digital" radio only refers to the digital tuning for AM, FM, and SW, and doesn't need a connection to a cellphone network. You could tune to 98.7 FM or 6730 kHz SW directly. Cheers

I have been charging mine from a small folding solar panel one of the goal zero ones with the floods here in Australia we should have a NOAA type service here. a year ago my house had no power for three days and no cell service it felt like a digital dark age regards mike

@@kisbushcraftdownunder I believe Euruope has its own kind of weather service, just as it has its own time servers. I presume AUS has it as well.

I am happy with mine a few weeks back the internet was down in my street for a week it was the digital dark ages at least the old analog radio signals were still working

Great analysis, Mike. I thought analogue radio was on the way out, like happened to analogue TV. Still the Katio has FM and short wave as well as analogue. It looks hardier than my Grundig Yatch-boy 80. Have you tried the short wave reception yet? Do you need to string out a long wire?

You are right about analogue and shortwave the number of channels are shrinking the Australian government no longer broadcasts into Asia and the south Pacific but that's up for review. Sometimes I think 🤔we are putting to many eggs into the one digital basket when conflict or natural disasters occurs old fashioned radio needs nothing in between the transmission and the receiver.I haven't tried my roll up antenna on the unit yet

In the land down under you guys don’t have your own local weather alert stations? I know here in the U.S we use NOAA, but I would think the weather band would receive local weather bands in whatever country you reside in.

We have a Government funded broadcast agency the ABC it provides news and entertainment content problem is its moving most streams to digital and quitting things like shortwave. The problem with digital and FM is a small coverage area and vulnerability to power outages between the listeners and the transmitter.After some recent floods some communities had no phone or internet for months they had to use battery operated UHF radios to communicate and start using money to pay for stuff regards Mike

Hello. Can anyone pls help me because i just got one and I think it does not charge the battery because when I plug in the radio to the wall, the charging light does not lit. The only time it lit is when I use the crank. This is just a week old.

Does the green charging light come on in sunshine ☀️? If so I would check your charger 🔌

@@kisbushcraftdownunder only when I use the crank that the charging light shine. But if I use the DC or USB plug to charge the battery, it does not. Can it be that the battery is the problem? Even if the radion and battery is new.

@@Andoy10 on mine the battery wasn't connected from new the white plug next to the green rechargeable battery pack I would look 👀at that first testing the battery 🔋will need a multimeter
