The dwellers in those mountain regions, along with the greater part of the lowland population, we call by a Latin name "Germans," as if we had first learned about them by reading Cæsar's commentaries. One can see how the popular name "Dutchland " would naturally remain associated especially with that bit of shore with which our forefathers had most to do. 'Dutch' and 'Deutsch' have the same Germanic root, originally meaning something like 'people' or 'nation.' The word 'Dutch,' in English, originally referred to Germanic peoples more generally before narrowing to the people of the Netherlands because they had a lot more contact and rivalry with them. It's interesting to note that the Dutch call their language 'Nederlands,' and the German language 'Duits.'
