Also I should have said the first people in Hawaii (and the native language(s) and where a lot of the names of these areas likely came from) were the Kanaka Maoli (Not "Maori" ...like I said in the video....as the Maori are from New Zealand!). Polynesians sailed there and landed there first to live. If someone knows more about this history I'd be interested to hear about it (and please correct me if I am wrong again as I want to make sure these are accurate #facts !)

Brought back awesome memories, my wife and I did that hike during our honeymoon in 2015. Neither of us had that hike tracked on a watch or any data on it, would have loved to have seen the amount of climb and descend. Some sections are incredibly technical. As Sage said, you need to experience the waterfall, no pic or video does it justice!

I did part of this hike with my Dad and Sister. I'd love to complete it one of these days. The permitting does suck. Weekdays are easier to snag

I love this hike/run. If you want to actually comfortably run parts of this trail you need to do it in July or August. All the times we hiked it was before they got got flooded out and rebuilt. My dad and I have done it six different times and have always gone to Kalalau beach and back in one day. On two occasions we were able to swim to the beach just past Kalalau and it is magical. It is called Honopu beach and virtually inaccessible most of the year. There is a massive archway and the beach is surrounded by shear cliffs on all sides. That being said, never do it when there is even remotely any swell. There is almost aways a longshore current that runs south that makes swimming back often impossible or very dangerous. When you get the chance, do it in one day. It has become a tradition for us and we do it every time we go to Kauai. Bring UV purifiers and filters because it is brutally hot that time of year and we usually drink upwards of 2 gallons or more each time we do it. The last push past crawlers ledge is HOT and exposed in July and August. Everytime we have hiked/ran it, it has been dry, at least the last half has. You have to start at sunrise or in the dark to do it comfortably in a day. Good choice with the trail runners, I always wear a trusty old pair of Brooks Adrenaline's and they are a mess by the end. If you have the ankle strength it is better to wear light shoes than heavy hiking boots. Loved the video! It was interesting to see it in the fall with everything so wet.

I have done this hike many times. Ran the 22 miles a few times to the furthest beach and did it once the day before my wedding with my wife. This is my favorite hike I have ever done. Wish you would have made it to the end... gnarly exposure starting around mile 7

Sage-did you get a permit?
@Vo2maxProductions

we had advance shuttle reservations and paid the park fee in advance. If you don't hike past that beach/trail/waterfall you don't need a permit (yet). Anything beyond you technically need a camping permit now and I think usually that needs to be made weeks/months in advance nowadays.
