Kalamax, the Stormsire is a new Temur (Red, Blue, Green) Elemental Dinosaur, coming to us from Commander 2020. This powerful, electric dino goes infinite easily with a fork and is sure to shake up the Magic the Gathering Multiverse. Joel offers 3 different ways to build Kalamax, the Stormsire, each doing its best to utilize Kalamax to the best of its abilities. In the strong category, Joel emphasizes Flash, followed by Fun: Vehicles, and finally, in the Mean Category: Control. Lets get this stegosaurus driving some cars. About the Three-Ways Series:
Some people like their chicken wings sweet while others prefer them scorching hot; either way, you are eating chicken. Magic the Gathering is a game with many different rules and building a Commander deck that works takes some time and strategy. Understanding the commander of your deck will help inform a deck-building plan that works for you. In this series, Joel discusses different ways to build different Commander decks. This broad-strokes approach will give you a basic breakdown of the commander and three different ways you can build your deck to work with its abilities, without providing a full deck-tech.
What is Commander:
Commander, officially recognized on June 17, 2011, originated from a format called EDH (Elder Dragon Highlander-- there can only be one). The first time we played EDH was around 2009. It is easily the best way to play Magic: The Gathering. The idea was to have a casual format with 100 cards and only a single copy of any one card, with a General: a singular Legendary Creature card in its own zone that can be cast any time, once you have the mana for it. If your general is removed, it goes up by a casting cost of 2 for each time it is removed. Once WOTC officially recognized the format and printed the first Commander product, your General was instead called your Commander and instead of the format being called EDH, it instead became recognized as Commander. If you ever hear anyone say EDH, they are talking about Commander. Make sure to know the cards that are banned in the format before building your deck (listed below).

Not sure why there were zero pump spells here? Fatal Frenzy or Rush of Blood after a Larger than Life puts Kalamax as a 30 plus power trampler and he can one shot people turn 4 or 5. That would be the Definition of Mean IMHO. Playing him in a control deck could be nice but I really feel like he wants to swing in.

It's not in there because I didn't think of it!! lol. I love that suggestion! I was totally focused on spellcasting with Kal, which is weird bc normally I'm all in on aggressive strats.

@@JakeandJoelareMagic My First draft of my Kalamax is gonna have like 7 Sorcery Speed Pump Spells around 17 or 18 Instant Speed Pump spells and Probably 10 of each for Card Draw and Removal. I'm running like 7 mana Rocks and 10 One or two CMC Creatures for Ramp. I'm only using like maybe 10 cards that are in the original deck. Also with Kalamax there are like 7 or 8 instants Copy spells in blue and/or red that Trigger infinite +1/+1 counter loops. The only thing you have to worry about is having a new legal target to copy.

There is this green thing that taps enchanted creature when cast and gives +20/+20. Ah, Colossification is the name. 5GG cost. After that an instant with untap and deal damage would be nice. Gotta try to find such a thing.

@@JakeandJoelareMagic I dunno if control feels that mean with Kalamax really (you want some). He goes infinite easier than most commanders due to copying a copy himself which let's you do stuff like copy fling and punch people in the face for 100,000 damage or something. But then he's got some built in combos where if you can get to 3 copies like twinning staff or primal wellspring get real stupid. Arcane denial lets you draw 4 cards and counter a spell. Narsets reversal you can bounce itself and bounce their spell so for instance they cultivate and you stop the cultivate (they keep it) you keep reversal and you cultivate plus counters. Every turn like its buyback zero. Unsubstantiate you can counter a spell (back to their hand) or bounce a creature and keep it in your hand like its buyback 0. This gets way more stupid than like a capsize where you are paying like 6 instead of 2. Going infinite is just like opponent casts a cultivate you cast reverberate boom Kalamax is a 10,000/10,000 and you get 2 cultivates for 2 mana. Thats disgusting. (can Ral, Storm Conduit get a what what 10,000 copies)

Copying a fork or twincast immediately goes infinite For instance Opponent plays cultivate You use twincast getting a copy of it if kalamax is tapped The original targets the cultivate and the copy targets twincast The copy of twincast resolves first letting you cast another copy of twincast with the original twincast still on the stack This is an infinite loop until you decide to not copy the original twincast on the stack or choose to copy the cultivate And with Kalamax second ability he gets infinitely large Or just win with Ral Zerek out since his ability triggers off of copying a spell

Honor-Worn Shaku and Cryptolith Rite can keep Kalamax tapped as well and ramp. Jin-G is definitely a card to be put in the ''mean'' version. Also keep in mind that If ur first instant for the turn is a copy spell (lets say Reverberate) then u can make Kalamax inifinitely large with counters by having the copy Reverberate (from his ability) target the original Reverberate and keep on copying the copies until u decide a copy of it to target the spell that the original Reverberate was targeting. Add in the war of the spark Ral Zarek and your opponents are dead on the spot. Bounty of Might is a OHKO if Kalamax is unblocked. Become Immense can kill someone on the spot (assuming opponent does not block kalamax ofc) as well if Kalamax is an 8/8 prior to u casting it or anytime if u use an extra copy effect of uy own.

Using Kalamax as "ramp" is a mistake lots seem to be making imo. Casting your commander and then an enchantment just to get 1 mana out of tapping him is nuts. Making him unblockable and drawing 2 cards for 1 mana is just better get that sweet commander damage in. Bounty of might and become immense are okayish but going after static buffs like that makes the mana cost get high. What you want to look for is ways to take advantage of his built in +1/+1 counters like Berserk, Rush of Blood, Fists of Flame, Fatal Frenzy, Invigorating surge, hydra's growth. Why would I want to win for 6 mana when I can win for 3 mana with synergy? Or at the very least I want something back for my mana investment like Balduvian Rage to draw 2 cards + kill. If Kalamax is unblocked becomes less of a problem when you sub in shadow rift, leap and Aqueous Form and swap out shaku and crypto rites.

Idk if I'm missing something, but doesn't Kalamax specify about instant spells? Not sure if it will work with flash creatures and/or sorceries at instant speed...

You're definitely right. Flash creatures are more about building on theme. And with sorceries at instant speed, we want to copy the instant giving the sorcery flash... Essentially lets us backdoor a sorcery copy

Do copied X-spells actually do something? Can u pay x for the copie? the copie will be without x and therefore do nothing - or do I get this wrong?

The copied X-spell will have the same value, is my understanding. So if you fireball for 6 and copy it, you get another fireball for 6.

You can't flash in Kalamax with an instant that gives him flash then play an Instant to copy. It says first instant cast each turn. So him having Flash in that way is not too great. Although the Can't be countered is nice.

That's a really good point and I think I misspoke on that. Including Quicken was more about the flavor of flash inclusions in the deck. You're 100% right.

Cedh for him is lots of abuse of going infinite and things like fling to make his murdering less interactable than combat. Low or no cost control like the new free with commander out spells or old school counter magic or even Not of This World seems pretty easy to pull off as a free counter but nobody seems to be using hrm. Plus ofc spark Ral. Narset's Reversal is completely broken but doesn't go infinite and tutors to find what you want.

I am confused as to why you are doing so many things to give flash. That won't trigger any abilities on Kalamax. Seems like a divergence of the focus for him.
