Jones/Jackson/Sabb/KMack/Howard+the 5 TRUE freshmen Mincey/Brown/Mbakwe/Morgan/Kirkpatrick > than the guys we lost in the portal as a whole.. Now replacing Terrion and Kool-Aid,and their talents and production is a different story. We wont miss Key. It would have been nice to retain Amos,I suppose,but is he better,and more athletic,than Domani Jackson and/or Deshawn Jones? Doubt it...I truly believe 100 % that in our NEW schemes and defensive philosophy,that guys like Sabb,Howard,Mack,DSmith,Red, and possibly even one of the other rookies playing in the slot as Strong Safeties(Rovers) and Nickels(Huskys),will give us MORE overall production. Malachi appears to be set on playing as a 1-High safety,in which I have my doubts. I really like Hubbard back there a lot,and I am sure Mincey is very capable if needed to play back there if needed,along with KMack+Howard. Downs was freed up to run the alleys under Saban and did it well with physicality. Made a ton of tackles. Plus was in tandem with the other safety in our regular 2-High look. Would NOT have been the case with our new system. He would have still been a force in run defense,playing as the SS,Husky,or FS. As a SLOT defender. No question. But he was a liability,at times,when targeted in the pass games of teams. ALL documented. The other guys?..Like Little,Ricks,Kite,Pope,+Story?....They were,and would be, depth pieces. It would have been nice to keep Woodyard+Grimsley and to see if/how they developed,but that is the game today,as shit as most see it.
