Kalevala is Finland’s national epic. Compiled by Elias Lönnrot in the 1800s, it consists of epic poems of creation, magic, lust, vengeance and death. A story of the sons of Kaleva, the forefather of Finns, it takes the reader to a mythical ancient land filled with monsters and magic, and even to the realm of the dead.
This animated series, narrated by Reidar Wasenius ( / reidarwasenius , illustrates the story of Kalevala from start to finish. This third episodes sees the minstrel Väinämöinen searching for his bride. But as usual in Finnish myths, it does not go well.

Just finished the Kalevala. I definitely see how Tolkien took influence from it. The thing I liked the most is how complex the characters are in terms of Mythic Poetry. In other words in some instances they make mistakes, in other stories they act brave etc.

I find reading it a soothing, almost magical experience. I guess it's not a very popular read nowadays, being in ancient poetic verse and all that. But definitely worth a read.

@@Anttimation I only heard about it because of Tolkien. I also like Norse Sagas but that is a completely different style. They tend to have way less magic and are very focused on geography. In a way Lord of the Rings mixes the magic of Kalevala, the geography of Norse Sagas, with Catholic theology. Totally random comment I have only been to Finland in so far as Helsinki airport, but in so far as airports go I was impressed. Enjoyed that I could drink the water that came out of the bathroom sink.
