Kali IN-8 Second Wave Monitors Review

I recently upgraded my Kali IN-8 first generation near field monitors finished in black for the later second wave version, only this time finished in white. So many advantages of a 3-way co-axial near field monitor design over the more common 2-way offerings.

Thanks. Congrats on not bothering with the microphone crap:) These are truly PHENOMENAL monitors, especially for the money.

@@tecraven Just for the record, I’ve also owned the Presonus Sceptre S8 and KRK 10-3, and have A-B tested them against the Kali IN-8 gen1. I’ve also tested the Sceptre S8 against the vastly more expensive Genelec 8351b - and would happily keep the S8, all things considered. The KRK 10-3 are in a very different league to the rest of the 2-way Rokit range, and don’t get nearly enough praise. They're very good. BUT - the Kali IN-8 is a real game-changer. They're super-clean, open and well-balanced, and have superior midrange purity over the others - and that’s just the 2021 first-gen model!

I keep seeing everyone say that the HS8s have overblown bass and that the T8Vs have too much treble. I'm so glad I waited to get the IN-8 v2s lol.

Thanks, totally agree with all that's been said, testing the Kali's atm and coming to similar opinion. Just curious, whats your opinion on comparing Kali's in8 v2 to genelec 8030 or Neumann KH120, mixing wise?
@tecraven

Been a while since I heard Genelec 8030, but they are donkey's years old now and still only two-way. They are good, but personally I think everybody says Genelec are good just because everybody else does. I've heard people say how good Genelec are who have never even hears them. I think they area good, but not that good, nowhere near as good as ATC for example. Neumann, not sure, new to the game I think and I've never heard them. I imaging they will be expensive just because they have Neumann written on them but can't comment on their quality.

Thanks for the answer, kinda my thoughts too :) Just tested Neumann for a few days actually, and honestly, Kali still won for me, the mixes on Kali again translated much better, gave me less ear fatigue, don't know exactly why, but it seems much more effortless to make an accurate mix on them (for me). Been using Adam a7x before them for years and I actually always hated them as they NEVER translated good to other systems, so I had to make various fixes after Adam, but I always blamed myself for this :) Still thinking on buying a second monitors besides Kali (as Im throwing that Adam through the roof now:) for referencing, but got to test out a few more to decide on this. What would u suggest?

@@miaman5270 I'm not a fan of Adam monitors, had A7x too, too darn harsh in the treble, hurts your ears as too bright and glassy sounding, not revealing, just harsh and horrible. I'm not really up on monitors at the moment, for a good second choice Yamaha HS8 are really smoothy and easy on the ear and super for the price they cost.

@@tecraven I'm using a pair of Adam A8h right now and will be ordering a pair of Kali IN8 v2. I have the tweeters on the A8h pointing at 3' behind my head and will probably do the same with the IN8 v2. I would use a sub with either set of monitors.

Genelecs are the "worst" sounding monitors on the market - I was in a music store where they had a wall of monitors set up for testing. And to my big surprise, the Genelec 8351B was the most "flat" and "boring" sounding, but I just assume this - they dont "candycoat" the sound in any way, they truly are just flat. Which is a great thing for mixing/reference.@@miaman5270

Thx for your review Can these speakers been used in Hifi system ? whats the limitation if any ?
@adrianbarac3063
@adrianbarac3063 5 ай бұрын
None. No affordable passive hi-fi speakers can compare to a monitor like the IN-8. I left consumer hi-fi years ago and would NEVER go back. You get built-in matched amplifiers for EACH driver, active crossovers (those last 2 are important), balanced inputs, no snail-oil speaker cables, a focus on professional accuracy. The difference is clear and present - and... it's very often cheaper!

How is the bass response? I've heard they don't go very low?
@tecraven
@tecraven 4 ай бұрын
They are 8-inch near field monitors so they are never going to shake the ground - that goes for any make/model 8-inch monitor. I've owned quite a lot of 8-inch monitors and these sound just as low as anything I've owned, but I have stuck a KRK 10-inch sub, which helps with mixing dance music with sub-synth sounds.

In your opinion out of the jbl 308, the krk rokit 8 abd the kali audio in 8 which woudl you say have the better bass? I can't afford to add a sub for now so I'm hoping to find an 8 inch that at least has some depth to it in the low end @@tecraven

@@MikeMackie KRK Rokit have a 'processed' bass that is coloured and tuned so it sounds deep, but it will screw up your mix as you will adjust the EQ to sound good on them, hence EQ with less bass, but when you play that song back in the car or in your living room on your HI-FI system it will sound like there is not enough bass so you have to be careful to get monitors that are uncoloured and neutral - something KRK Rokit monitors definitely are not. They KRK subs are ok, because it is hard to colour the sound of bass. I've not heard the JBL 308 monitors, but I don't like the build quality of them. I'd go KRK as the bass kicks if you crank them up, but it is natural and smooth and, course, they are a 3-way design, unlike any other monitor under £1,000 so they have the advantage of that, something the other monitors don't have.

Wouldnt the In 5 would be better for the size of your room ?
@tecraven
@tecraven 6 ай бұрын
No. It's a small room, admittedly, but the 5's just don't have any bass and are not as dynamic - I tried them.
@Notinserviceij
@Notinserviceij 5 ай бұрын
MYTH. speaker size really doesn't matter in the room. it's only if you can't fit them physically .
@tecraven
@tecraven 8 ай бұрын
Not really. ‘Near field’ monitors are designed to be listened to from close range, typically within two meters. Also, they are totally neutral and not coloured in any way, which is what is required for mixing and mastering audio. With domestic hi-fi speakers you actually want them to be coloured and tuned by the manufacturer as this is what gives different makes and models of hi-fi speakers their unique flavour, which is what is generally wanted in the world of domestic hi-fi speakers - even very high-end hi-fi.
@hienvu1714

"...They are neutral and not colored in anyway..." - that's a "textbook" definition of studio monitors (at least the ones used for mixing) but in reality, few monitors meet these criteria.

I am using the original IN8's in a hifi set up, Kali say they can be used at up to 3 metres. They sound great, better than my very much more expensive HIFI speakers.

@@michaelbooth6007The IN8 are midfield monitors so you're fine at up to 3 meters. Do you ever feel the urge to add a sub when you listen to prerecorded music? I'm using a pair of Adam A8h and I definitely want a sub. I'll be ordering a pair of IN8 v2 and will use them with a sub.

@@hienvu1714 yeah it's the intention but of course unless we are using alien technology and in a perfect room etc. every system has some colouration - but at least studio monitors try to aim to eliminate said colouration where as hi-fi target pleasant sounding colouration as a goal as a part of their "house sound"
Incredible magic 🤯✨
