It was no surprise that Adam Stewart took over Sandals after his father, founder, Gordon “Butch” Stewart passed away. But now his chunk of control in the iconic Sandals Group may be at stake.
There’s a battle over last minute wishes made by Butch Stewart to his common law spouse Cheryl Hammersmith- Stewart.
Sandals is a huge part of Jamaica’s and the Caribbean’s economy, so this issue could have rippling effects.

I have been following this story since it came out because mi fast lol. It seems like the "wife" knowing that she wasn't legally married to Mr. Stewart concocted a scheme to secure more assists for her and her young children. I don't believe for a second that a man as smart as Gordon Stewart would leave a memo regarding the division of such large assets, without getting lawyers involved. That doesn't even makes sense. How would you validate such memo without having a witness, a power of attorney, a notary or anybody that can back up your claims. The wife/girlfriend is clearly playing checkers, not chess. But maybe she have more tricks up her sleeve.

If Butch did not make any alterations to the way he structured his trusts, it means he wanted it like that. She wants to undo his rightful wishes, he probably told her what she wanted to hear in his deathbed, but its clear he had no intention of keeping his "promise" to her. She would lose this case if I was the judge. You cant just make alterations to a persons' will because it suits your agenda.

Oh boy. I knew of a family with this same problem. When the father died, the children were torn apart over who should have what. It has happened so many times and I think we should learn from these situations. When people have assets, make sure you have an iron clad will in place because fights may come from very unlikely sources.

This has really struck a nerve and is very alarming. Sandals and their companies are very important to the Jamaican economy and a lot of other Caribbean countries. This is truly cause for concern. I hope that Adam and his like minded siblings win the matter for the sake of economic stability. This would make a big mess otherwise and open room for too many nonJa companies to enter the tourism market

I read the judgement published on the Bahamian Supreme Court's website. It is truly a complex set of arrangements. This case will end up at the Privy Counsel. Unless they can come to a reasonable resolution without destroying the various entities.

This is not simply rich ppl problems. This is about property law in particular probate and succession law. As such this effects even the "small" man as it could affect the interpritation and application of law. This will be an important case not only in J'ca but much of the English speaking Caribbean because our laws are very similar. So even I a "small man" in Barbados who practices law am paying attention.

The so called wife is slick that’s why she is saying it should be five trusts with hers and her kids being 42% and thus being the biggest shareholder. Everyone knows that Adam was groomed to continue the leadership of the company, and he has done an amazing job. This woman thinks she is entitled to all the money and power. I think Couples pioneered the all-inclusive model in Jamaica, not Sandals, so I'd describe him as one of the early entrants who dramatically expanded the concept using a modified Club Med model. Now, hopefully the squabblers won't destroy the business because often it's the only one doing major advertising of Jamaica and the rest of the Caribbean where it's located.

The Issa's, Tower Isle/Couples and Hedonism resorts Jamaican-ised the CLUB-MED all-inclusive concept and certainly were around many years BEFORE Butch Stewart set up the first Sandals on the beach in MoBay. It was near enough to the airport that whenever jets landed or took off you could hear the noises in the hotel. Because of this some people expected SANDALS to flop. The Sandals staff turned it into a 'thing' where everyone would wave when jets were taking off etc. Not sure if rooms were also sound- proofed, but in fairly short order, SANDALS became the leading all-inclusive resorts in Jamaica and the Caribbean. And 'everybody' loved the mini leather SANDALS keyring things they gave the guests, although COUPLES 'lions-mating-logo' t-shirts at the time, were wickedly cool too!!

Adam is the successor and should have the final say in how Sandals Estate is operated. Adam is closer the his dad Gordon Butch Stewart than any other family member. Sandals is a great resort run by Adam. There has to be synergy and not conflict between the US Family and the Jamaica Family.😎🤔

They resurrected the ill fated airline. Bought it from the Govt. It was an extremely wise move on Butches part. Butch affected the exchange rate as well. He had the airline plus the Hotels. Smart move.

I don't really know Adam Stewart personally but we have all watched him grow in leadership at Sandals. For anyone to imply Butch wanted otherwise the day before he died? Come on. Blatantly wrong. I hope the judge deals with her accordingly. I feel bad because this brings unnecessary animosity between the two sets of kids. Ideally Adam should tae over and the other young kids should be groomed for leadership alongside Adam and Jamie's kids. It's really unfortunate what greed can do.

There is so much you could have incorporated, was it initially a revocable trust or was it a irrevocable trusts, structure of sandals and the rest of the ATL group, butch had ownership in media outlets, multiple private villas, is island routes apart of the deal. Explain what is a trust, who is a trustee, how was the original trust set up, some back ground information on the trustee.. felt like you read the gleaner article and not much more work was done

The point is that the CEO began making hostile decisions that affected the US family; a CEO can easily freeze out a beneficiary by cunning moves such as arranging humongous loans paid to the CEO's favourites and then telling the US family "sorry, there's no money right now to pay your dividends because the Company has too many loans" By the way, we sold the family private plane but you and your kids won't receive a penny! By the way, unless you drop your lawsuit, you won't get a penny of the $100M left to you. By the way, if you agree to drop the lawsuit, I still have the power to squeeze you out.
