It is a city in central-western Poland, Greater Poland Voivodeship, located along the Prosna River. Kalisz is one of the oldest cities in Poland. Under the name Calicia it is mentioned by Ptolemy in his Geography 142 AD. e.
Historians believe that Kalisz was the most destroyed city in Europe during the First World War. After the end of the war, the city was rebuilt, retaining its medieval appearance.
An important monument of the city is the Gothic Cathedral of St. Nicholas. The most valuable exhibit of the church was the painting by Rubens "Descent from the Cross". The canvas was damaged or stolen in 1973. The treasure of the temple is the 13th century baptismal font.
The Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is located in the city center, on St. Joseph, built in 1353. It was rebuilt after 1790, in the late Baroque style, with a Gothic altar. Included in the register of monuments in 1965. The most valuable part of the cathedral is the treasury. It contains a Gothic bowl from 1363, donated by King Casimir the Great. The church also has an underground chapel, which is now equipped and is the main place of pilgrimage.
Kalisz is the only place in Europe where you can learn how to build a piano on a professional level. There are only 3 such schools in the world.
The market square measures 100x120 m. In the center of the square there is the town hall, which is still the city administration. Due to the destruction, the town hall was rebuilt three times - the last time in 1924.
Franciscan church and monastery - founded in 1257. The altar of the 13th century and the naves have been preserved from the original construction. The adjacent monastery was built at the end of the 17th century on the site of an older one.
Kalisz City Park is the oldest park in Poland, founded in 1798. It was originally publicly available to all residents.
