Tarikh is a daily program in which we present you with incidents and stories of noteworthy persons of Indian History in Hindi. In this edition of Tarikh, Nikhil talks about Hirakud Dam. Built in 1957, Hirakud stands tall in Odisha's Sambalpur district. This earthen giant, once the world's largest, was a marvel of engineering. It aimed to control floods, generate electricity, and irrigate vast swathes of land. India's independence leader, Jawaharlal Nehru, even called such dams "temples of modern India."
However, Hirakud's story goes beyond grandeur. The land where it sits whispers of a hidden past. Legends speak of Shambhala, a mythical city, and historical records mention diamond deposits that once thrived there. The dam's construction submerged this very land, displacing 22,000 families. में ओडिशा से हूं उस समय जमीन की बदले मिलने वाली रकम किसिका 2 रुपए किसका 5रुपए किसकी 7रुपया अभी तक नही मिला । अपनी जमीन छीन जाने की वजह से बो लोक अभी किस हालत में हैं आप लोग सोच वी नहीं सकते ।

In first 10 years of independence India made so many dams and infrastructure with limited resources … amazing!! If governments can only focus on country first policy, we can achieve a lot more..

Ambedkar was not only the symbol of knowledge, not only father of constitution rather than a great political leader, the father of RBI, father of labour laws, saviour of every depressed classes, father of women empowerment, fierce opponent of any kind of discrimination and also the father of modern India 🇮🇳 !

I'm from Sambalpur and my family was sufferer of displacement during construction of Hirakud Dam , very sadly said that still we haven't get rehabilitation money or property.
