Kamijo Kamonji. He is a very famous person when talking about Kamikochi.
He is known as a mountain guide for Walter Weston, the father of modern mountaineering in Japan.
During the Edo period, villagers in the Azusa River basin entered Kamikochi to cut down forests designated by the Matsumoto clan, and used the water from the Azusa River to transport lumber to Matsumoto. In the Meiji era, logging of national forests was prohibited, but it is said that Kamonji, who lived in Kamikochi and was familiar with the topography, acted as a guide when the government officials made patrols and surveys.
In the mid-Meiji period, foreigners invited by the government began to come to Kamikochi for mountaineering as a sport. In 1893, he served as a mountaineering guide for the English missionary Walter Weston, and became famous when he was introduced as an outstanding guide in "Mountaineering and Exploring the Japanese Alps" published three years later. He was appointed as a guide by foreign climbers and other climbers.
