Great side by side comparison. I've never tried a Kamisori, however I have a Razorine which gives a great shave. The techniques appear similar to use. Thanks for sharing!

David chaffin - I’ve never used a razorine but can see they are DEs side mounted. They have a blade guard. These razors and straights with an open blade are very different and can give a much closer shave if you get the technique down.

Stephen is really cool dude! I love watching him. If that is the CJB, it's out of S Korea. That was my 1st Kamisori shavette. I'm a HUGE Kamisori fan. I have passed along my CJB and now use a Kai knockoff and a Feather SS (which is FENOMINAL shaver!). Great shave though!

I also have the CJB kamasori and I love it, I try to let the blade stretch as far as I can since they can be over a buck a peice many places. I like using it along with my classic samurai Shavette when I’m sporting a beard to get those crispy ass lineups that look like you just left the barbershop. 💈😁🤙🏻💈. Good stuff Why spend over 100 bucks when this one is just as good?! Blows my mind so much money just to get that name. Same thing with fashion it seems

Matt I have 3 Feather razors, one of which is the Kamisori style. The main advantage to the feathers over the traditional straights is the lack of maintenance, especially when traveling away from home for extended periods of time. BTW, if you are coming back into the US from Mexico put them in your checked baggage. Even without a blade in them the screeners south of the border will want to confiscate them. I had to talk a blue streak to get the supervisor to release it.

Good to see you posting again Matt, you were on hiatus for a minute there buddy! Lol Btw, In my opinion the Kamisori is superior. I guess it's all a matter of preference. Those feather blades are too bad sharp! I'm note a fan of shavettes. I'll stick to the straight up good ole fashion straights. Hope all is well bro!

Straights are King Josh but nice to change it up once in a while. Since I don't monetize my videos so you guys can view commercial free, I don't depend on the income from them so I do it for fun and once a month to me is fun. If it were a job that I relied on for money, then I'd do weekly videos or more and constantly be trying to sell everyone some shit vendors send me to promote. That'll never happen on my channel!

Nicely done Dr Matt, and yes Stephen is a nice man.😌👍 I think you’re spot on about the relative smoothness of the blade types, but the Wecks are still my favourites. 🙄 The scales on a western style razor give an advantage to me, pinching them between my fingers is a big part of my grip. As you showed, DE shavettes are fine if your technique is up to it, especially if you choose a blade of the quality of a Polsilver, I tried one of the the black Derby’s in one last night, so much better than their other horrible offering. 😌

@trunkerdixon

What is their other offering? My cheapo shavette came with Derby 'professional' half blades in a green box. As a bald, shaved guy it's hard for me to verify claims of 'For Barbers Use' since my need for a barber is parallel to my need for shampoo. What's a decent life expectancy for a blade - 3 shaves = a week for me. T
@bendycard
@bendycard 5 жыл бұрын
They’re the ones Trunker. I know some people like them, but I don’t, not in shavettes, they aren’t sharp enough for me. I want to know that the blade will glide and they don’t give me that reassuring feeling. I was looking forwards to trying the Derby Premium blades as I’d heard good things about them and they didn’t disappoint. It’s just how it is for me, I hope you have a better time with them.

I’ve a quick question if you’d be kind enough to answer. I’ve got a dovo razor which was blunt, I sent it back to Germany the other day and they sharpened it again. It’s come back much better than before. However it’s still not as sharp as my disposable shavette. Is this normal or is it that it hasn’t been sharpened as fine as it could have been?
@drmatt357
@drmatt357 4 жыл бұрын
If you're using the DE blades in your shavette, a straight razor will not get that sharp or have the effortless glide they do. I don't know what to tell you about the Dovo edge. Honestly, I've never had or tried a factory edge that I thought was any good. If you're in the US and want to send it to me to look at, I'll be glad to check it out.

DrMatt357 thanks Matt. No I’m in the U.K. The DE blades are great but I would rather use the dovo razor as half the fun is about stropping and getting a good edge. What I’ll do is buy my own stones and follow your videos so that I can get a better edge than what comes out the factory. Do you post to the U.K. and please can you remind me what stones I need to buy?

I have a traditional straight and It's no where near as sharp as my shavette. However the sound and feel is much better with the traditional. If you get proficient with a shavette you'll have no problems transiting to a traditional just need to get use to the larger blade.

@@drmatt357 I learned how to straight with a parker shavette used it for 7 years before investing in a traditional straight. Almost zero learning curve, just had to get used to a blade that was twice as big as the shavette. I'm pretty sure have the straight very sharp invested in a 12k grit niwa but like you said DE is such a thin edge they don't compare. I do tend to get a little sloppy with my technique because I can get away with it with the traditional, but the good old shavette is there to tighten it up. Have used my DE a few times when in a hurry but the odds of ingrowns goes way up. Love the art shaving should be an experience not a chore. Your face will love u for it!

Yo Dr Matt, I am just getting into straight razor shaving....but I’ve got some questions. I have watched almost all of your videos, but I’ve not seen you answer the questions I have. So here it is, I got a kit for Father’s Day and it came with a soap puck that’s not in a tin. How in the world do I get that thing to lather properly?! I can’t make it sit still in a bowl. Hahahaha!
@drmatt357
@drmatt357 5 жыл бұрын
Actually a good question Tommy. You can take it and throw it in a coffee mug. It may still rotate but won't really go anywhere. I take it to a cheese grater then press the flakes into an empty soap tub I have from an old soap or you can get empty tubs.
@tommymetzgar72
@tommymetzgar72 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Dr Matt! I’ll give it a shot. I was curious about that actually, I wasn’t sure if I should soften it up and let it harden into the bowl or not. But I will try the mug!! The reason I got started using the straight razor was to get nice lines on my beard and actually see where I was shaving. My wife got me a Grim Blades essential shave kit from Classicshaving.com. So far it’s been great! I started with a super cheap shavette from a beauty supply store and when I used the Grim Blades razor, for the first time, it was like a beam of light shining straight from heaven. Hahaha! It’s difficult to do the upper lip and the sideburns, but I imagine it will get easier.
