The town of Kamnik is surrounded on one side by hills, and on the other by a high ridge of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps (Kamniško-Savinjske Alpe).
Kamnik is one of the most beautiful medieval cities of Slovenia preserved to our days. The most beautiful part of the city is certainly its old center. Narrow streets and red-tiled houses have preserved the unique spirit of the Middle Ages to this day.
Kamnik is the center of Slovenian beekeeping. Here they breed "carnian" bees (Apis mellifica carnica), which were still bred by the Romans in the eastern Alps. Today, this breed is called "kranjska bee."
