Handling venomous snakes takes skill and serious caution. Simple duties like cleaning out enclosures and changing water take time when it comes to caring for gaboon vipers, eastern diamondback rattlesnakes, cobras and taipans! Matt is growing into his own. He had some great input and asked a question that I thought was brilliant for newbies. "What does it mean to be envenomated?" Thanks for the content and the video Kenan! Always learning on this channel.

Just for clarification, since there were a few comments. The reason for the different pupil shapes, slit pupils vs round pupils, is being a nocturnal or diurnal animal. What Kenan was saying is that in North America it just so happens that nearly all our venomous snakes are mostly nocturnal, so they have slitted pupils. Not that venom was the reason, but just coincidently they're almost all nocturnal (excluding the coral snake). So it can be used to help identify.

Rattlesnakes are gentlemen of snakes. They warn you theyre there. Won't strike unless you step on em or grab them. They'll try to escape if they can. That's one reason I hate rattlesnake roundups where they kill all of them that are caught. Big diamond has a beautiful pattern. Gorgeous!

The only problem is that the rattle doesn't work on humans. When other creatures hear it they know to back away. When humans hear it they seek out to find the source of it and kill it.

There has to be a balance. Too many venomous critters in a human hood and the venomous critters must lose! I adore all the critters but killing an animal that will kill you or yours is Not a sin. For example. In Costa Rica MOST of the land is jungle. Every once in a while humans make compounds. Fer De Lance are simply NOT allowed w'in the compound. They can and Will kill you. We take them far away so they have a chance but they Almost always return. 2 returns and its off with yer head. Most farmers or ranchers don't even give them a chance. This doesn't bother me in the least. Ive done it myself. They have the whole dang jungle. This few acres is for us. Sorry/not sorry..

When I was 8 yo a maternal uncle who lived & hunted in Notheastern PA took me up into the NEPA mountains where he knew there was a den of Timber Rattlers. It was a sunny day in late October and about half-a-dozen good sized rattlers were there sunning themselves on the shale ledges surrounding the (well concealed) mouth of the den. They were fairly lethargic from already entering brumation. The sun had sunken below the tree line and the air temp had dropped dramatically when we passed that area en route back from our stroll. We then noticed all the snakes had retired into their den and my uncle told me soon they wouldn’t emerge again until the following spring. That was one of the first experiences which got me totally hooked on snakes & herps in general. BTW; they had a mixed exhibit of rattlesnakes (Canebreaks?) and Eastern Box Turtles out at the Staten Island Zoo several years ago. I saw it when I went out there to examine the reptile house which I’d been involved with upgrading & retrofitting some time ago. Admittedly I was a bit surprised by the snake & turtle mixed “room-mate” situation!

Just something to keep in mind regarding telling venomous apart from non-venomous, don't rely on JUST the shape of it's pupils. Their eyes do dilate in low light like a cat's eyes - not that you should be close enough to see a potentially deadly snake's pupils, but a triangular head where the venom glands are located is another tell that a snake may be dangerous.
