Bro rewatching this episode and the first season makes me so sad knowing what is to come. The psychological aspects of the show I adored as a behavioral psychologist. I don't see many shows that get things so twisted. The music, the art, the writing and VA work just so top tier. Idk if You noted this But Jason used 2 different kagunes 1- the one before kaneki broke the chains and the one that covered his eyes (the one with the Big ahh arm) I'm going to tell the reason so don't keep scrolling if You think this counts as spoilers Just in case You know the second kagune is actually called "kakuja" it's Developed when a ghoul eats other ghouls (if You are wondering why shuu doesnt have a kakuja is bc he didnt ate enough ghoul flesh) the kakuja its like a armour, covering body parts like the face, back, shoulders and arms, thats why jason had all that "flesh" covering him

In this episode the fight between kaneki vs jason was top tier and unravel just takes it to another level soo soo good and i actually like when they use there op songs in fight scenes i actually love this kind of decision even i think sometimes without using ost's or soundtracks using the op is a so good decision

Reading the manga would be awesome, you will we surprised of how good it is

To briefly explain how they screwed up the later seasons without spoiling anything, basically it went like this. The 2nd season quits following the manga and goes an anime original route. However, it still takes some of the more iconic scenes from the manga but uses them in a setting without the proper buildup or explanation for character motivations making the whole thing feel like a messy patchwork. Then they ran out of time or budget or something in the last episode and spent like half the episode on a walking scene instead of what should have been the most epic fight in the entirety of the first half of the series and just entirely off screen the fight. To make matters worse the 3rd season then returns to following the manga without ever bothering to recon the disaster which was season 2 and just pretends as if it had adapted the manga for season 2, so that no one who is an anime only can even follow what's going on properly. It also didn't help that the art and animation for season 3 totally dropped off a cliff. Then season 4 is rushed insanely badly by stuffing like a 100 chapters into a single cour season. The art and animation did not improve from season 3 to 4 either. It's infamous for being one of the worst anime adaptations. They just completely dropped the ball on so many fronts with the only thing that was done really well being the soundtrack. I love Tokyo Ghoul and I first discovered it through the first season of the anime, but the follow up seasons really are not something I can recommend. Truth be told, while the first season is a perfectly acceptable adaptation even it is not without its flaws. The manga has a much stronger focus on the biology of ghouls earlier on which is completely absent from the anime which really makes things even harder to understand later down the line when they start pretending in seasons 3 & 4 like they didn't skip that stuff. It also tries to dumb down Kaneki's character in these earlier arcs for some reason too to make him feel like more of a shonen protagonist I guess instead of a seinen protagonist, which never really made any sense to me. Also they skipped a decent chunk of content between Kaneki getting captured by Jason and the fight scene in this episode which kind of familiarizes you more with characters like Banjo and his gang who would normally play more of a role in upcoming arcs if the anime didn't go anime original and just cut them out almost completely in season 2. Also, the anime makes Rize in Kaneki's head seem like more of a supernatural merger of their souls or something from the surgery as opposed to more of a figment of Kaneki's imagination that he is using to disassociate from his ghoul nature, which is just a strange change in nuance especially since Kaneki's tendency to disassociate is a rather important character trait. This does as a result make Rize appear more throughout the anime if I recall, where as in the manga I believe it was mostly just during the scenes in this episode. I don't really dislike the change of giving her more screen time earlier on honestly. I kind of like the addition of her throughout other scenes prior to this, but I still think the change in nuance is just strange. If you still want to check out the anime first and then read the manga to compare, then that's perfectly fine, but you should at least be aware of the many shortcomings of the sequel seasons because it's going to get tougher to understand things as a result of the poor adaptation the further you go.

I think I've read somewhere that it was actually Ishida himself who wanted to make season 2 different, a sort of alternate timeline, but who knows. He did however make a huge storyboard for it and knew some things will not make it. Idk how the studio went about making it, how the cooperation went. But it's certain that the number of episodes was too low for the story they wanted to tell. Manga is the source material, of course it's good/better, and the anime does let a lot of things unanswered, but honestly some people act like it's the worst thing on earth which is not. It's just a bit goofy. I take it for what it is, you can go watch it and make an opinion yourself. You can read the manga anytime, I think it might be even better if you will know what will happen in the future because you will notice all the symbolism and foreshadowing.
