The second episode from an exclusive series of conversations, ‘Newham Talks’ sees Kano link up with well-known faces across the worlds of music and entertainment, sport, food, and literature, to raise money via GoFundMe for the community of Newham in East London, where they all grew up.
Donations can be made via the GoFundMe campaign with all proceeds going directly to Newham charities supporting young people, tackling homelessness and helping end food poverty.

Big up Joy White! It's important the right people are preserving our history. Will check the book out. Knowledge is power. I always knew Kano was socially and politically informed. Big up our ambassador. Don't let them ever bring you down.

@Jon Doe ONE: Social history written by the people who live there. Jungle, Garage or Grime was made by working class people and they deserve a voice Yes or No? TWO: To be "EXACT" the system and the media. Kano's photo was wrongly used by papers instead of Wiley's but that was just a mistake to most people, not causal racism hey!!

This is SOOOO dope, sending love from the Bronx. I'm a public school teacher here...I was also born and raised in the BX. A lot of the questions and concerns about caring for, protecting, and empowering Black and Brown young ones explored in this video are things me and my community of teachers live our lives by. Shout outs to y'all. And also the album "Hoodies All Summer" is fire. Hopefully, the world is different after COVID-19. Peace y'all.

Loving these series Kano.... really relaxed and have an authentic, genuine feel. I didn’t know who Joy was before this and had to read the Bio and comments to get up to speed (Probably my lack of understanding the culture outside of music) but would be good to start by introducing n explaining who the person is, if not as well established in the mainstream. Keep it up King this is well needed and you have a subscriber and follower of this content 🙌🏾

Great show Kane👍 I grew up in Leytonstone not too far from Cathall in the early 2000s when Garage & Grime was taking off. Still remember when ratty gave me a couple cd's back in the day saying one day this will be hot property ( not sure what i'd done with them lol). We can all see the changes which has taken place in Newham and I think i'm one of the lucky ones because I saw an opportunity in Construction and took it. Without the regeneration in the borough I think I'd still be hustling . Opportunities are out their and young people need to go out there and grab them and not hold back. From the age of 15 up to 25 i was wasting my life away and then one night something clicked and i started taking a different perspective in life. Hardest thing was leaving your friends behind but you know what friends don't last forever. Making money from shotting dosen"t bring happiness either as you will always be sleeping with one eye open.

Really enjoying these discussions Kano. Joy is a very concious woman talking on Newham. I worked in Newham for 7 years when l moved from Birmingham and it really opened my eyes to what social deprivation is and how it happens in a area such has Newham. Especially at the time of the Olympics how the government and councils literally crushed their own residents and drive thru gentrification at lightening speed. Rendering people homeless whilst opening up Foxtons and the Westfield’s and having the shopping centre fall into disarray, with the rise of the tent city. They created a have & have nots environment. The people of Newham are still feeling the affects of Boris Johnson’s Olympic Legacy not in a good way either. 💔

What a great PhD to do and chronicle such an important time. Black men get a bad rep but actually to pioneer a genre and monetise it independently should be celebrated, which it isn't really. I saw its beginnings and like Joy says there are positive elements and it was all innocent. Youth Centre was also a massive part of that too, Decks and Microphone, we loved it.

@sathyaziva8218
@sathyaziva8218 3 жыл бұрын
Crude Craig the journey to getting rent to £1500 a month is what you need to look at.... it ain’t business it’s gentrification and it’s not a level playing field.

B R is it full of pawnbroker? Payday loan companies and bookies?
@sathyaziva8218
@sathyaziva8218 3 жыл бұрын
B R instead of gentrification think about localisation.... more small/medium independent businesses so the wealth stays in your community and not an offshore bank account.... always research your local councillors and never vote because they are part of a party.... local councillors have a lot to answer for yet many people couldn’t name who their councillor is or what they do
@TakeMeBackPirateRadio
@TakeMeBackPirateRadio 3 жыл бұрын
@B R No it needs legitimate council investment to help every single person in that community not gentrification which is mainly a governmental drive to support big corporate business only and uproot people like me, Kano, Joy White and others like us out of the community. Throwing dirty money on things with no conscious political and economical solutions only pushes the problems elsewhere and doesn't address them. We are talking about the social aspects not purely economic and money driven.

Big respects to you both Joy white and Kano for this real and nicely toned conversation . There was so many points that you brought up in it that I could relate to but the thing that really hit home to me was when you brought up I think it was one of Joys work's colleges was racially abused at work and it was treated like it was normal and acceptable behaviour I'm myself have had this treatment can you believe in 2020 but my dilemma is I'm the only black face there I was once asked by my so called manger if I think his a racists I didn't really no what to say apart from reverse the? And ask him if he thinks his a racist I'm still waiting for a reply funny but not really that funny but hay . Sorry for long winded message I just wanted to show my appreciation to you both and send my respects keep up the good work and stay blessed thank you. I don’t really get the ‘are u hiring black people’ question. Just because, how does that work, would I (half Jamaican n English) get a job over a white person because darker skin? Even if the other person was a better fit? In bigger corporations it’s easier for to get a job because I’m black, in small local business it’s more difficult. It’s the minds unconscious bias that needs to change, not some particular diversity law
@tuesdayschild8994
@tuesdayschild8994 3 жыл бұрын
Their minds aren't going to change any time soon. This is generational social change that takes times. A law could help this along for people who aren't good at it. Diversity is great for business, it should be just as easy to get a job in a cooperation and a small business. You should be given the opportunity over a white person if you are better or just as good if their diversity is limited. All that is being asked for is the same opportunity which doesn't happen.
