This guy you've probably never heard of is connected to EVERYTHING - he was tied into the early hip hop scene, influenced several early hip hop groups, and directly and indirectly influenced Kanye on his third album Graduation. Today, I'm pulling out some red yarn to show you that if this guy didn't exist, neither would Kanye's Graduation.

I met Edwin Birdsong back in the mid 2000s in SC of all places. He walked into the guitar store I worked at. He was in his mid 60's dressed like a baller and had a young girl on his arm. I worked in the guitar dept so he heard me playing guitar and struck up a conversation with me. He was very curious about how I learned to play what I was playing. I had no clue who he was. I asked him where he was from he told me he lived in NY and he was here visiting his girlfriend's hometown. He told me he was a professional musician. He casually mentioned that Eddie Kramer produced his first record. That floored me because I knew who Eddie Kramer was. He walked me over to a Yamaha Motif and started playing Stevie Wonder tunes and said he worked with Stevie. Then he played Cola Bottle Baby which I recognized as Daft Punk. It was apparent he had made good money from sample royalties. He was actually a really nice guy and a beast of a musician. He came in the store a few times that summer. You could tell he loved music and was a very educated musician (he graduated from Juilliard). It was only later that I learned his tunes were kind of a hotbed for hip hop samples. I haven't thought about my random encounter with Edwin in years but I came across your channel (which i love BTW). I immediately recognized the picture of Edwin. Great video detailing Edwin's influence on some of the all time greats.

I'm just gonna say it; if you were black and listening to "urban" music back in the 80's, you knew Edwin Birdsong, he was no mystery to us. 'Rapper Dapper Snapper' got much airplay on urban radio stations (like WDAS in Philly), and if you were in the party scene, you know that the dance floor would fill up when that song came on! I have that record somewhere in box of vinyl. I recognized that beat as soon as I heard 'Me Myself and I' the first time! BUT... I watch every documentary about hip hop music, and this is the first time I've seen someone give this artist and this song it's props! So, kudos to you for this!

He single handedly changed music as we know it, get of your high horse. No one gave to shits about the guy at the HQ of the record company he produced tracks for, he had to gather his last money down to the penny to get enough so that he could make the music video for Through The Wire, gather all his friends and colleagues right after almost dying in a car crash. Then and then only the head of the record company noticed him. Everybody sounds more and more like corporations, he said a bad thing well then we have to eradicate his entire legacy. My question, how did you change the world? If you want to make the world a better place take a look at yourself, and make a change. This man came from nothing and he changed everything. You didn't do shit but to repeat something that someone shoved down your throat.

You need to do a part two on Edwin Birdsong. If you did a part 2, then you need to do a part 3. If you did that, then just keep going. I went and looked up every song you were talking about and some took me down memory lane, some shocked the hell out of my mind and blew it up like I was a debutante in the first Kingsmen movie. I am gonna need to study your whole dang catalog, you, you damn hip hop historian, because (sounding like Anakin Skywalker), I want more.
