"In between storming away from paparazzi and storming the stage at New York's Governor's Ball music festival, Kanye West squeezed in time to chat with the New York Times about being the self-proclaimed "Michael Jordan of music" and his newest album Yeezus, due out June 18. For loyal followers of the rapper's @kanyewest Twitter feed, his epic quotes should come as no surprise."*
Kanye West is pretty narcissistic. And self-absorbed. He gave some pretty epic quotes in a recent interview with the New York Times. Is his confidence justified? Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian break it down.

He's a genius, his albums are absolutely fantastic and he's one of the last remaining "true artists" still left on this planet. This mentality of him being an asshole was forged by the media because he doesn't believe in any "system." In fact recently he completely gave a middle finger to the industry with his new album by not using album artwork, not releasing any singles to radio, and only putting 10 songs on it. He's one of the most influential and intelligent artists today

Listen to Late Registration, College Dropout, Graduation, 808's, and Watch the Throne... The're not shallow. And by listening to his music, you're not encouraging pathetic behavior, you're supporting a talented artist. People can talk shit about Kanye all day and rightfully so, but at the end of the day, he speaks from the heart about what he believes to be true... That's 100x more than I can say about any "respected" politician who habitually lie to get ahead--at the expense of others.

Kanye might be a nucleus on a culture dish n some laboratory, but that is as far as his cultural taste goes. The man has no taste in clothing or women. I'm just waiting for someone to really take him down a peg or two where he can get his reality in check along with his super sized ego. The man is just so trashy. There are better rappers out there that have more talent than he does , and better looking black men who have nice personalities. I'm just wondering why Kim lowered her standards to bring this BOZO into the Kardashian fold.

I gotta give it to kanye he IS one of the pieces to the nucleus of hiphop/street culture. He's brought hundreds of trends to the mix. He's a visual genius, he's a complete artist. He is a huge inspiration to millions. Almost every trend, he's been there to set it up. Polo? Kanye West. Skinny jeans? Kanye West. Bomber Jackets? Kanye West. Pink on men? Kanye west. Im not saying he is solely responsible for these trends but he was definitely a big piece of it. now for his ego, I'm almost positive he just says it to stay relevant in the mainstream. But i dont care for any of that & niether should you. We aren't his friends so why do we care about how he acts? Why not just listen to the music and if u like it, u like it. If not then u dont. thats it, because all he is to us is an artist on our phone. He's not our friend he's just someone who we listen to, when we are bored or want to listen to music.

He doesn't censor himself or is politically correct, he calls it as he sees it, being the "nucleus" of pop culture. The real Kanye the article says it something a few people rarely see, where he's a shy and good natured person according to Kim Kardashian and a close friend. Because of the hardship of making in the industry as a black man, he has adopted this persona of being aggressively extroverted to protect himself. I'm not sure if I buy all what this article selling but I certainly agree

That live performance was dramatic that he did back in 2003. Anyways thank you for response usually don't get one at all. But, what i meant to say there is still few artists in hip-hop community that are trying to keep it alive with substance behind their music. Please check out these songs and those artists J. Cole "Lost Ones", Big K.R.I.T "Yesterday", Kendrick Lamar "Sing About Me I'm Dying Of Thirst".

For the nucleus comment, by best guess is that he took a quote from KRS-ONE's "MCs Act Like They Don't Know" that goes "In hip hop's atomic structure, I am the nucleus" and took the context completely out.

In conclusion, money is what motivates a lot of people. Hip-hop isn't lost, you just have to look for it. People like J.Cole, Joey Badass, Kendrick Lamar, Big K.R.I.T are few of individuals that strive to save the Hip-Hop music. On the other side Gucci Mane, Meek Mill, Jeezy, Waka, Lil B, Soulja Boi etc. are rappers because their loquacious talent of rapping is solely motivated by money and producers instrumentals. Those instrumentals produce an outstanding party music for the clubsand radios.

Thanks for the response, I appreciate it. I may have been too harsh on the genre, but a lot of Rap lyrics are offensive to me and make me feel embarrassed for the performer. For some reason YT would not let me view your entire comment, but I am pleasantly surprised that the responses so far have been very civil, thoughtful, and objective. That's far from what I expected. Thanks again and please take a listen to Dan Fogelbergs "Leader of The Band". I heard it just now. My all time favorite.

She's not boasting about how great she is and a lot of people take care of themselves physically. It's called pride. Their is a difference between pride and narcissism. Kanye is a narcissist. He's constantly boasting and is convinced he's a gift to all. Narcissism is about having an overly high opinion of one's self, not taking care of one's self. Of course being obsessed with one's appearance can be a part of it, but Anna doesn't give off that vibe.

Kanye is taking pop music and turning it into something else. It started with 808's and became something brilliant in MBDTW. Songs like Runaways, Blame Game, and lost In The World took a comercially viable hip-hop sound, broke it down and built it up again, 8 minutes at a time and now with Yeezus he's taken it further with abrassive synths heard before only in underground or experimental hip-hop. I don think he's the most influential hip-hop artist of our time.

I suggest finding yourself a sense of humour. The best thing about Kanye in sit down interviews is he never takes things too seriously, that nucleus comment was clearly in tune with that. He is a great artist, he is a very successful artist- he knows that and everybody else does. That makes a person more self confident in themselves, and who exactly are you or anybody else to call somebody 'arrogant'?? Its a shame everybody doesnt have as much confidence in themselves

Kanye will still be screaming "I'm relevant!" from the rooftops when he's 80, divorced from The Kardashians and not selling any records anymore, because people found out that there is decent music out there, which he has always desperately tried to copy, while artists like Killer Mike with tracks like Reagan were addressing problems in a way he never could.

Recently read an article about Kanye West where it was said that if you think Kanye's crazy the jokes on you. This whole narcissist egomaniac complex that people see in his music, in his performances and in public is an image he's cultivated over the years because people don't know what to make of this hugely successful black man who's defied the establishment to make his fame and fortune. He feels people think he's a nutjob, or a monster so he plays up the image they want.

just checked, kanye has 21 Grammys. only black people with more are Quincy Jones (27) and Stevie Wonder (22) and neither had 21 by the time they hit 36. As for not beating anyone white, thats not true. he beat the Beastie Boys in 2005 for best rap album, The Lonely Island in 2010 for best rap/sung and Eminem in 2006 for best rap solo. but in his defence, his beef is the fact he hasn't every won a grammy outside of the rap or R&B category.

He is right in that he never won a "mainstream" award, and lost to Maroon 5 for best New Artist in 2005, which might have been bad, but at the time I'm sure he was just happy to clean up on all the "urban" Grammy awards. He also has a case for Album of the year in 2006, as he was a producer for Mariah Carey's album, and that album lost to U2. Still, he is very talented, but like many talented people, a bit crazy.

It isn't only me that has seen this though, it's common for the foreign to be attractive to people. An Australian girl was very popular at my school for her accent, just like an English guy was with the girls. There was also a Mexican foreign exchange student at that same high school and girls were interested in how life was where he lived. I studied in Sweden for a year and I have the same story to tell, girls thought I was some sort of cowboy because I was from Texas.

I think Kanye's personality is made shallow by his status, but i don't think his lyrics are shallow. Just because some lines refer to cash and bitches... doesn't mean it's shallow... shallow lyrics are lyrics with no meaning behind it. When Kanye talks about that he does it knowing how shallow they are, making them no longer shallow, but more of ironic reflections of his culture... listen to: All of the lights, Monster, runaway, All falls down, gold digger, touch the sky, diamonds.. ect..

You wrong. Rap is something you do, hip-hop is how you live. There used to be hip-hop culture and rap music was one of the branches along with hip-hop music. '90s was a prime time for hip-hop culture where money wasn't involved in the music business. After money got involved music competition increased and with rise of internet, people with no talent at all uploaded their music. What happened next is dramatic.
