Just because the fire risk could be low doesn't mean it's impossible especially if you have a fire hazard of a design as found out in this terrible tragedy
Haven't done one of these in forever but real life and work sucks! Finally though I give you guys something that you all come to the channel for. This may be the last one for the year due to family and time but I may squeeze one in December so sit tight!

This is so sad. It’s bad enough to report even one death. But it was absolutely shocking to hear of so many. And outrageous; it’s criminal that no one was held even remotely responsible. God bless these families who still suffer their losses. RIP those who died.

As a retired volunteer firefighter (9 yrs) and Registered Nurse (24 years), I’m very aware of fire issues. Make sure wherever you live, have a fire plan ahead of time. Involve the whole family/roommates, etc. Practice the plan or drill at least once a year. When in a building, be aware of the exit locations, fire extinguishers, fire hoses, etc. It’s against the law in the USA to lock any fire escape (egress) doors from the inside, so if you see that, report it. Always change your smoke alarm batteries twice yearly (or when they beep at least). Have a smoke alarm on every level of your home! Many people buy a carbon monoxide alarm too. It’s up to each adult to help themselves and the young and the elderly. Preparation is key! Maybe those nightmares will stop soon.

Great documentary. There was a similar case in the US that occured at Avondale Mine in 1869 (caused by arson) however, many factors of this case and of the Funicular remain the same where a fire broke out in the tunnel and lack luster safety mixed with a building atop the structure would result in high casualties. It makes it all the more important to share accident knowledge and history because history has a way to repeat itself.

@EM.1
@EM.1 3 жыл бұрын
So they updated the train but didn’t install basic safety features: -Intercom emergency calling systems on the coaches to communicate with the drivers -Smoke detectors that trigger a warning in the driver’s area plus a sound alarm that warm every passenger of the smoke -No fire extinguishers placed in all the key points in the coaches, the fire extinguishers numbers must be calculated based on the maximum capacity of the coaches - No hammer to break the windows. But they thought about adding a heater not designed for the use on moving vehicles. The reasons to update something must always be to make the thing more safe not more fancy.
@linnymiddy
@linnymiddy 3 жыл бұрын
All that had to be done was just have emergency door handles and have two conductors and fire extinguishers everywhere, maybe anti fire splinklers too
@EM.1
@EM.1 3 жыл бұрын
@@linnymiddy Definitely door release handle or windows release handle, you can see them also on the busses, so it’s not difficult neither expensive to install them. I don’t know if it’s possible to have sprinklers, because there’s no water pipes that can provide the water. The Intercom to inform the driver it’s definitely necessary, not only for fire but also in case of medical emergencies, or everything that requires the driver to be informed of a specific situation. In those types of trains there’s never two drivers because they move in a single direction, and are moved by weight and counterweight, so the only driver necessary is the one in the direction the train is moving. Fire retardant interiors are a good and efficient way to gain time and slow down the fire, so the passengers can put it out with the fire extinguishers, in case it’s impossible to immediately exit the train because it’s in a steep climb on the rails and there’s no space for the passengers to go.

I have just heard how the passengers were able to get out of the tunnel from a train fire but it sure is sad to see the incline railroad shutting down because of the heaters. I hope you have learned that you should never put heaters on moving trains and you should always have safety reasons so that won’t happen again.

You got to wonder why did they install heaters not designed for moving vehicles in the first place.

Holy shit, hearing how this heater caught fire sounds exactly how the heater in our garage caught fire as well. Same exact design flaw, but thankfully away from any flammable material and falling on the concrete floor. Shockingly the fire alarms did not go off and the whole room was filled with smoke. Our dogs were ok as well as the house. I am just flabbergasted on how they thought it was a good idea to place something like that (because you would have to do that without doing research on the product or design) and say that this item will be used effectively even though it was not designed for this type of purpose. Jesus. I got flash backs when you mentioned the design flaws of the heaters Edit: thankfully we did not have a ton of Brake oil under the heater catching fire.

All the fire hazards aside, not having fire extinguishers nor e-stop buttons in the passenger compartments feels totally insane. I'm wondering now though - have there been any funicular disasters where the cable HAS snapped/melted/etc. and caused a rollback? I know it's sick to be excited about fatal disasters but... I guess that's why I'm here.

There was one wreck I remember, which is what inspired a scene in one of my favorite steampunk movies, Hugo. It was the Paris derailment of 1895. Could you do a video on that one please?

That's a terrible thing to have happen to those ppl. No way to contact the operator, no emergency exits, no way to get out, but to bust the glass, with their skiing poles? That was a death trap. Those poor ppl!😥😔

You should do a video on the Onondaga lake railroad bridge. Its killed a lot of people over the years and still nothing has been done to fix it. A few years ago a double decker bus ran into it and killed a bunch of people, and that's just one time. It should've been made into a level crossing years ago yet it remains to be constantly struck by vehicles.

In my opinion I think they should of instilled a proper heating system that would of avoid the train catching fire but the damage was already done and I agree that they should had fire drills & instilled things for Fire Safety incase of emergencies.

no. The 20 year anniversary of that was in 1971. Mind you if Seconds from Disaster covered it in a programme I'm sure this lot could make their own documentary out of the footage and a few random shots from elsewhere.
