Having worked with a few patients with dystopia I can only imagine how much it would get into your head as a runner. Kara’s mental strength and character is inspiring!

One of my favorite episodes. As others have said, reading Kara's book is an emotional journey that makes you rethink what you support, and how you think about the structure of the sport. As much as I absolutely love in-depth shoe analyses, I'd love to see more of these long-form interview-based episodes!

Great point on running without worrying about time. That's why I rarely look at my watch while running. We do our best when relaxed, and being obsessed with time doesn't help.

If I could change one thing about the sport of running? Kara's answer is on point! Running is hard, especially if you compare yourself with other (faster) people. It would be great to just enjoy the run sometimes.

She is so right! The obsession, recent in current sports, of just the pace , really is what is driving doping in endurance sports, and what SHOULD matter is just racing and winning regardless of pace , what does really matter except an advertising strategy for big business. It completely misses the point of competition , and it really makes for a miserable life for athletes.

Really loved this week’s episode. It’s tragic that abuse of top athletes is so widespread, but I’m glad systems like Safe Sport are working on it, even if there’s still a lot of work to be done on improving the system.

In talking about all the high tech watches etc people use today, it reminds me of an interview Greg Meyer did where he talked about the first time Rob DeCastella showed him the heart monitor he used. Rob told him he only used it on his easy days. He already knew what "Hard" was so he used it only to make sure his easy days stayed "Easy". Dan

I loved the comments about getting the watch out of running. I think we definitely should try to get back to pure running and not consistently looking at our watches/data

I forgot my watch and phone at a recent race. I exceeded expectations and ran shockingly good splits. I'm considering using it for training only in future, I loved the freedom from mental math while running.

Loved the interview. I listened to her audiobook earlier this year and thought she did an amazing job narrating her book as well as writing and bringing these hugely important topics to light. Her vocal performance added weight and a realness to her words for me. I also really appreciated y'all going into depth about dystonia since, other than knowing Kara has it, I knew virtually nothing about it.

Kara’s strength and conviction to do the right thing are incredibly admirable. I started running after the trials and a lot of the news broke so I never knew much about it. This makes me rethink what brands to support, I won’t look at the swoosh the same again.

Excellent interview with Kara. I listened to her audiobook during my easy runs and wanted to keep running because the story telling drew you in to what was going to happen next. The thing I would change in today’s running culture is the price of entry. It used to be an inexpensive sport to pursue, but the rising cost of gear (shoes especially) and race prices make it out of reach for some. I know I’ve backed off of racing some the last several years because of the race entry fees. Please consider this feedback for the RW gift card giveaway! Appreciate your content and look forward to more in the future.

Women have been fighting for autonomy for decades and decades and it feels like there is a generational reckoning in progress, but there's still so much work to be done. It's going to take serious and sustained collective action to prevent abuse and change our cultural norms. I think it's easy to look back on the days before smartwatches with rose colored glasses when everyone on this pod (and I) had coaches and assistant coaches timing our runs, planning our workouts, teaching us along the way. For runners who are learning outside of a club or school, it's much harder to know your pace, how a run should feel, plan your week, plot a route, etc. I think smartwatches have made the sport more accessible. But if your tech is bothering you, I'm all in favor for leaving it at home.
