"I think he's just gotten radicalized the way a lot of people are online. I think drug use, as The Wall Street Journal has written quite accurately about, might be part of it. And then it's just being the world's richest man with everybody licking you up and down. He gets particularly licked and so he’s always right. And we had a big falling out- an inexplicable falling out.” - Kara Swisher

Yeah well, the Chinese govt doesn't accept complaints. So what's he supposed to do about that? Devise and install a better Chinese government? In the US complaining is a fundamental freedom, so he availed himself of it. All this couldn't be simpler.

If you are unable to learn anything from interviews, then that's a skill issue bro. Either that or you're watching shitty interviews and listening to the whole thing when you could just skip to the parts that are of value to you. Kara Swisher in particular brought interest into tech that wasn't there before. She started interviewing people in tech back in the 90s, before people paid any attention to people like Jobs, Gates and Zuckerberg. She's as important to the tech world as Rebecca Quick is to the financial world. I argue that lack of scrutiny into tech and finance led to the Dotcom bubble and the 2009 financial recession.

I do think that if Tesla went under in 2018, the legacy automakers would have sharply reversed course on making EVs and Europe and America would be waiting for large numbers of Chinese EVs to arrive today. It would have set back the conversion to EVs by a decade, and that is a decade we likely don’t have on the climate catastrophe since I think we are already twenty years too late. That said, yep, for sure there was sexual harassment at Tesla and they knew it, because for example I reported a guy who was groping women and bragged about it. What followed was months of ongoing retaliation that finally got me fired.

The Wall Street Journal spoke to numerous sources who said that Musk does drugs not once, but on a regular basis, and much of the time the drugs are much harder than pot. I think your point about a chemical imbalance due to drugs is reasonable… I’m just pointing out that it appears to be from a lot of drug abuse including hard drugs, and not just one time smoking weed. A friend of mine hung out with Musk once a few years ago, and he said they stayed up late getting hammered doing shots of hard liquor. Many people don’t consider that to be a drug, but it is kind of similar… And it is very similar if a person is getting wasted off of it. And it indicates that he has a problem with substance abuse.

The sleeping on the factory floor is a somewhat classic "leading from the front" move. Giving more than you demand of others... You'd go out of your way for a leader like that. And I'm not sure his point about Tesla's fall being dangerous for humanity's future is entirely wrong. Tesla was a symbol. Proof that electric cars that everyone thought wouldn't be commercially viable, could work and be profitable. Tesla inspired all the other major car makers to change direction. Tesla failing, might well have had the reverse effect. Especially back then. So, even if a little exaggerated, his basic point may well be valid.

Where was the "necessary" government force then? Especially when the same government was preventing people from operating their businesses, going to church or a wedding, or saying goodbye to a dying family member? The answer is because government force is arbitrary, always has been arbitrary, and always will be arbitrary. Be very, very careful about so casually excusing and justifying government power and overreach, because that power WILL be used in ways you DON'T approve of by people you don't approve of, guaranteed. Can we be honest and say that Wall Street needs an Iconoclast to sell the tech sector? When Steve Jobs passed away the hype machine ramped up for Musk and he leaned into it. Not that he doesn't have an ego but he's playing the character they demand if him. And yes I realize he did not create some things that people associate to him but he is a very good spokesman. Tesla is very successful and has never run a single ad. Musk is the product more than the car although they are exceptional vehicles.

He has shown NASA that private industry can do better job then they can. He knows how to hire the right people something the auto industry and NASA hasn't done. The people he hires come up with some of the best innovations of our times and yet I have this feeling that he can turn on this country.

Okay. That tracks. I am a long-time fan of Musk and have witnessed a lot of unfair criticism coming from pretty transparently grubby places, but at the same time I resonate with exactly the same ear-pricking moments she described, from the pedo call onward. Because this is all I have to go on I tentatively conclude we're naive or Pollyanna to imagine we could do better. There's a side of our brain that likes the laws of literature. Wants to tell a good story. Where good people are unambiguously virtuous, etc. We still can't accept or see ourselves as both beautiful and slightly broken. Why should any of us have to live up to perfection? Why, especially, someone who has done far more than you or I? I'm far more concerned about the logical consequence of that naive belief in anyone, from Entrepreneurs to politicians.

Elon is clearly neurodivergent. He has some talents that go beyond the average person in understanding quite a bit across various disciplines that are objective like engineering and business. But like many neurodivergents that are on the spectrum toward being a savant, they can be severely lacking in other areas. He clearly is confused and gets easily off in the weeds on more abstract topics like sociology. Other than being really committed to work and his businesses there is a reason he has been married so many times. He doesn't understand people and how to relate to them. So the problem for him is that because of his wild success in most of his ventures he doesn't realize his own shortcomings or accept criticism in these areas he struggles with and instead is certain he is a genius in everything. So once he gets going there is no turning that ship. And he is personally heading straight toward the reef at full steam. So far his shortcomings that are obvious to everyone else, haven't harmed his success in these other areas he does have talent in so it doesn't register. Only when he falls hard from those shortcomings will he maybe realize he was wrong. Or he will take a victim mentality and place the blame on his imaginary enemies that succeeded in taking him down at no fault of his own.

I think highly social people value that too much for its own sake. You can't help it, but the typical person is gossipy, anxiety-prone, and ignorant. We're born ready to fight. Then we look for pretext. We're born unhappy in our abstract environment by nature's design. Then we are supposed to look around and find something or someone to blame it on. The targets people pick reveal their own nature.
