I have realized that for me, "cleaning the house" was actually a form of procrastination. Once I realized that I am doing multiple listings a day instead of one or two every few days.

Yep! The amount of times I've talked myself out of doing something is shocking. Lets face it, we as creators need to be our biggest cheerleaders, but without a schedule or structure, it's chaos in our creative brains! "Done is better than perfect" as my mums old cleaning apron used to read!

This is a conversation I needed to hear. Pictures are the bane of my business, so that's 100% my big but. My pics are never feel as good as I need them to be. I just need to do the best I can, and let the unrealistic expectations go. I can always rework them later if I need to.

Ah yes… The To Do List. 1. Write list of what you need to do tomorrow 2. Next day- get up, read list 3 Spend next 8 hours doing things that aren’t on the list 4. Add things you’ve just done to the list 5 Cross them off and pretend you’re doing fab even though you didn’t get everything on the list done 6 Write another list for tomorrow, that looks suspiciously like your original list. I can’t be alone, surely? 😂

Unbelievably I’m coming to all of these exact realisations in the past few months. It’s a constant fight but I’m starting to get moving. EBay for me right now but Etsy next. For EBay, I like to photograph my items in natural light during the day. If I don’t have time in the day, well I can’t list then, can I? WRONG! I can create the rest of the listing, save it as a draft, and in the morning take the pix and then list. No more lame excuses!

I reward myself. Like if I drink this cayenne pepper tea I can have a cup of coffee. If I list this item, I can go start a new project (something I like to create :)

I was just going to write a longer comment about how true what you said is, but that would be another excuse not to get on with the overdue work. Let me just say that it is terrible to take on such a disliked and put-off job. It hangs over your head, it doesn't give you peace of mind, but doing it gives you incredible satisfaction. It is a great relief, giving peace to your conscience and causing an increase in euphoria and satisfaction.

I just had to chuckle!! There was a commercial that popped up and ran just before you said "Now I forget what I was going to say". OMG, I started laughing! Great information. I do this, but... Here's my Yeah, but. I am in my early sixties, and I want to do something to keep me busy but I don't want to grow a business so much that I am overwhelmed. I also have allergies and asthma and they rear their ugly heads at the worst time so I need something flexible enough that I can take a few days off to recoop. I also am teaching myself to draw I have a great KZfaq teacher.

That's easy. Sell things that you have ready to ship, meaning that you make them ahead of time and only list things that you have ready to go. That way it will keep shipping times to a minimum, and you won't have to work to make things on order if you're having a bad health day.

Good lord I feel called out! I should be listing items. I’m worried about perfection because I’m a supply seller and people can get bent out of shape over a single millimeter. Measuring is daunting. Descriptions are daunting. BUT (and this is a good but) when I list, I sell. I need to get at this.

I found sticking to a routine of working on things from noon to 5 or 6 p.m. works best for me. I make it a rule I can't start a new project until I list the last one. Coming up with keywords is my nemesis and I tended to procrastinate. Sales for me have been slow on Etsy so I tend to get unmotivated. To keep me going I started looking for in-person shows to do. You always have the best advice and tell me what I need to hear.

YESSSSSS! I really think sometimes we just need the permission (like what you did right here) just to light the fire under our ass to get it done. I'll admit tho... My productivity level goes WAYY up when I write things down. I have a notebook I carry around just for my ideas or what I need to list or what listings I need to fix (damn Etsy and their inability to upload photos 🤬) but yeah... My advice is to WRITE IT DOWN! as soon as you think of it... Write it down

That is exactly where I am at right now. I make the things “but” don’t want to list the things anymore. I used to love it when I knew they were going to sell. Motivation is lacking. This year my new listings just sit there with barely any views. Especially hard when it’s a new type of art and cannot just copy another listing. Another excuse I use …BUT I’m traveling so much so why list if I just have to delay shipping or vacay mode. Thank you for your wisdom. I often hear your voice in my head “They can’t buy it if it’s not listed.”😂

This describes me to a T. I am the Queen of Yeah, but. I have probably over 100 items that need to be listed but I don't like to do the photos so.... I just keep knitting more items to be listed. And rather than face the photo issue, while knitting item after item, I search/watch how to manage my time/be more organized/more productive type videos.... because surely there's a reason why I can't find the time to get my items listed.... Ugh! I should put this video on repeat and listen to it 24/7 for a week or two.

I can’t ever find right words so that is a project always for next year . But if I started a year ago, I would probably have more experience than everything would be easier

The things I hate doing - ie listing, I always look for a more efficient way. Spending twice as long as it would take me to just list the damn things. Now I try to ensure anything in draft is ready to go - so I can just tick off a few listings a day.

I resonate with this more than I want. Big buts problems, in more ways than one. 😅 Thank you for sharing! Really needed to hear this today. I have a box full of unlisted work since last August BUT I need to make my website better, I need to make lighting better ...no, no you don't, just list it Martina, dammit. Thought this problem was going to become smaller with time. I'm close to 40 and have to train myself regularly by doing the countdown. Like rocket launching. 5,4,3,2,1. On 1 I get up and start with something. Helps with overthinking paralysis.

Great video!❤ I have a little sign in my studio that says “I have not yet begun to procrastinate”. It’s to remind me if I’m putting something off to figure out why and find the best solution. Ironically today is one of those days. Why? Because I’ve been working non stop on my business since I stared last September and I need a day off! 😅 So today is a play day and tomorrow I’ll be mentally ready to get back to the grind. Running a business takes discipline and a willingness to understand yourself (as well as your customer).

The 10 minutes a day or an hour a day chipping away at something you need to do, like listing, helps me. I take pics one day, process them the next day. Then maybe list the next day. That ways I’m not spending allllll day on 1 listing

Talking about the flaws we see vs what the customers see, I had a repeat customer message that she loves my tumblers but wishes there were a more pink version of one of them because her mom loves pink. Challenge accepted, I slathered the cup in pinks, but to me it didn’t look very different from the original. I threw up the listing then sent her the link with a huge paragraph-long explanation of how I tried *but* it really doesn’t look at all pink, sorry. Ten seconds later, I hear the ca-ching and get a message that her mom absolutely loves how it turned out. Lol 🤷‍♀️ I tried to talk her out of it; I really tried! 🤣

I'm your gal, I think. Loads of stuff to list. I set my # per day, start the process.... then get a custom order that takes every spare minute. Then the SO has another health crisis... Life gets in the way. Keep slogging on.

Hello Kara, I appreciate another fantastic video from you. I currently operate a shop on Etsy where I offer digital downloads such as clipart and sublimation files. I'm considering adding cross-stitch patterns to my offerings, but I'm hesitant about creating a separate shop. I believe that including these in my current shop might confuse my customers, given the distinct audiences and niches involved. Could you please share your advice on this matter? Thank you for taking the time to consider this.

I don't think it would confuse people, it's all craft-related. It's up to you but I'd keep things in one shop so that it's less work. The downside would be that if you ever decide that you do want to separate them, you'd lose the selling stats when you moved things to the new shop.

Hello, I have been changing the titles and key words over and over and still no reviews or sales but I am wondering if I should renew or relist the listing after doing this to start the algorithm over.

You should stop messing with the listings. Put the title in as what the thing is, then add some tags to describe it more, then leave it alone. The search engine needs time to see who interacts with it. You should also send your own traffic to it.
