This video is an introduction to the clean up routine we use in the ceramics studio at MHS. They will learn proper cleaning of tools, tables, sinks and floors to have a safe studio environment.
Always remember- a clean studio is a safe studio! An environment high in clay dust poses a true health hazard.
It is always best to avoid airborn dust by quick clean up of all debris while still moist, and wet mopping all dust from the floor before it becomes airborn. Microscopic Crystalline Silica is present in clay dust and is a hazard to breathe - especially for long exposure to it. It is best to keep a clean environment- especially the floor for safety and health. Crystalline Silica can be present in the air and not visible to the eye. Don't vacuum clay dust unless you are using a special HEPA rated vac or wet vac which can catch these microscopic particles.

But I've been told not to ever use brooms in indoor studios because it makes the particles go airborne?

HI Jenna- that is always good advice. We use the brooms only immediately for the clay which is still moist- getting up the chunks gently with a broom prior to mopping. I emphasize the nature of just pulling the broom to get the chunks in the dustpan and not stirring up any dust. For clay which has been longer than say 30 minutes, we get it with mopping. The floors get mopped 6 times a day by students. With 150 kids every day in the room, it is necessary.

Why have you wiped the tables so lightly? We were always taught to use lots of water and rinse really well, otherwise there is going to be dus ton the table when it dries . Also sweeping that dust with a broom is going to make the dust airborne?

Hi- I explain the sweeping part in the video- we are just getting the moist debris chunks at the end of every class. GENTLY corralling it into the dustpans prior to mopping. That’s to get up the chunks. I emphasize not to stir up dust. We have 7 classes a day in the studio- 5 minutes from one bell to the next. I have the kids judiciously use water so the canvas isn’t super saturated for the following class, or they have a wet mess. The last class does a very wet deep clean.

For some reason no matter how clean I try to be I'm really scared of creating dust and getting silicosis.... I always clean everything with water but it's mainly my clothing and the canvas that I use to knead on that I'm worried about making dust. How often should you wash your Pottery clothes and if theirs a bunch of dry pieces of pottery just sitting on your clothes will dust start to accumulate into the air? I wear and old pair of pants and shirt and then a long jacket that I wear over them. The jacket always stays on the porch where I work but will walking into the house with the other clothes I wear underneath put dust into the air? And can I leave them inside until next time? I just place mine on a stool in my room but I'm worried each time I pick it up theirs dust going In the air. I hope I'm not being too paranoid I just want to make sure I'm doing the right thing.

Not a bad idea to leave your jacket outside! I leave my apron in my studio. I do try to rinse my apron off when I see an accumulation of clay- then after rinsing I toss in the washing machine. I guess if I have clay falling off of it, then I absolutely clean it! ;). Most of the time it isn't that bad... but when it gets to that point, it has probably needed it for awhile! I think you'd be fine in your clothes you wear under it though if you aren't really seeing clay on them! I do change my shoes however- I have studio clogs which stay in my studio, and I switch to other shoes when I leave to go into the rest of the house! I wear the same set of clothes in my studio too until they get messy and are ready for a wash!

+John Schwartz It is my favorite mop by far! The Rubbermaid Reveal mop! They sell at Walmart, but I buy them at Sam's club, and they are cheaper and I get extra pads that come with it! :-)

+KaransPotsAndGlass Thanks so much. The students just create at much dust as they want and make no effort to contain or control the dust. Any reference materials about ceramic studio safety you could share would be most helpful!!!

John- I have referenced Ceramic Arts Daily forums quite a bit for safety information, as well as just googling stuff. I just know, safety to me is of first importance... as I love clay, and want to stay healthy when I retire! With 7 classes a day cleaning the floors now, it makes a huge difference in the environment in here! Originally, I had relied on a room filtration system... (Which I found out years later, wasn't correct- it should be hepa filtered and it was not) When I found the air wasn't as filtered as I had been led to believe, my priority became getting the dust and debris off the floor as soon as possible to keep down dust! I also clean my room a few times a week with a HEPA shop vac as well to help. Sorry, I don't have any documents in particular that I have kept, but most information is online! I hope that helps! :-) Karan

Lol- that’s the way it looks all the time- but we mop after every class! The microfiber mops are the real key- and keeping them rinsed out!

@@KaransPotsAndGlass that's great you can clean after every class. Not possible where I am at and after it's cleaned students come in during the evening to use the room

It’s built into the last 10 minutes of every class bell- every kid knows the routine- it takes time to develop the routine- but it’s SO worth it. Any after school kids in clay also mop! Once they know the expectations- that’s half the battle!

You're washing clay and glaze down the drain. Aren't you worried about clogging pipes? I didn't think it was legal to dump the glaze chemicals down the drain.
@KaransPotsAndGlass
@KaransPotsAndGlass Жыл бұрын
Washing off is different than dumping. 😉 Clay sink traps help to catch heavy particles which are then disposed of in the trash when cleaned out.
@debbiecote3993

@@KaransPotsAndGlass your sink can trap the clay which is good but the glazes have copper and other dangerous chemicals. How are those filtered? Not criticizing just trying to find out how to do this safely at home.
@KaransPotsAndGlass
@KaransPotsAndGlass Жыл бұрын
I’m not filtering. Glazes still have heavy particulates which will settle in the traps too. It may not catch everything, but it does a significant amount as evidenced by the colors when I dump the traps! 😊
