The soul they lack is that they're structurally missing a theme, an "armature" (like a sculture has. With no armature, a sculpture has no real structure to it.) A base, a foundation. When done right, a movie resonates in a way that reaches us on a universal level. That's where the "soul" of a film comes from. It doesn't matter if it's corny or "dated"...That is why no matter how corny or dated Star Wars, Rocky, or Karate Kid are, they still work. And are still producing sequels, spinoffs, and whatnot. What you said is accurate and why nothing made today that comes from today's time will matter 30 years from now. Stuff today has no theme, no armature/base, no soul. (Just like our society. And art reflects the society it comes from.)

Bobby is the voice of reason throughout the Karate kid movie and deserves alot more credit than he got. Bobby wasn't as wild as the others, his karate was controlled and smooth. He might have beaten Daniel if Kreese had let him fight his own match.
@Zurround2 жыл бұрын
If he had beaten Daniel would Kreese have still been pissed at him? And guess what, if he had beaten Daniel then Daniel still would have made it to the semifinals (top 4) and even that would have been enough respect to end the bullying problem. This is especially true for when he was facing Johnny. had he lost to Johnny he would have made 2nd place and beaten all of the cobras other than johnny (to boot a very close 2nd place winning 2 of the 5 rounds had the crane kick failed). So in any case the bullying problem was over. Miyagi basically said that when he told Daniel that he did not need to keep fighting that he had nothing more to prove. He had already earned enough respect to solve the bully problem.

The first two deleted scenes certainly give us more of Johnnie's character. For the sake of the film, I can see why they weren't in the final cut, as they show Daniel fighting back more and trying to reason with Johnnie, but in order for the film to work, we need to see Daniel as the beaten down underdog. Also Zabka's performance is not up to par. In context to Cobra Kai, however, this is invaluable and I like how they used the lunch room clip in the recent season 4.

The scene of Bobby quitting would have been a nice tie-in to Johnny beginning to see the light, too.

Johnny was NOT happy about Kreeses dishonorable actions. I think if Johnny had beaten Daniel he would still have shown good sportsmanship congratulating Daniel for a close 2nd place and the bullying problem would have been over. I also think Johnny would have quit the dojo due to the very sad circumstances that led to his closest friend quitting and being so unhappy about Kreese's dishonorable actions. I have a fantasy "alternate universe" ending where the crane kick fails in some way "maybe JOhnny blocks or dodges it or the referee declares it illegal as there was some controversy about the legality of that kick) Johnny is about to be declared the winner by the referee and Johnny silences the man before he can declare him the winner and he tells the ref about ordering Bobby to cripple Daniel and ordering him to sweep the leg which could have caused permanent damage as the leg was already broken and Johnny asks to be disqualified and the ref agrees and gives Daniel the win. And Kreese is so furious about that that he attacks Johnny immediately and not out in the parking lot and Miyagi is right there to restrain him then the security guards put him in handcuffs to await the police. Ally is so impressed with the honor and sportsmanship Johnny showed that she forgives him for all of his transgressions and runs up to him and plants a big kiss right on his lips then jumps into his arms and they end up getting married and having a family together.

I can see why some of these scenes were cut. The first one makes Johnny 10x more psycho sounding, than his normal anger at the heat of the moment. And Daniel's extended screaming about his leg at the end (even though that may be more reality of what would happen) makes his character look way less strong than what he was built up to be.
@PoisonousPen2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, totally agree with this. It’s much better to see Johnny as a cool guy, but who can suddenly switch to being cold and mean - a guy you could actually imagine people being friends with, but they’re always a little scared of him. Better this than have him as a merciless psycho who derives joy from inflicting pain, rather than a guy using violence to try and maintain some sort of control on his out of control life. I’m glad they took this scene out. It’s too overdone and makes Johnny look weak.

While Daniel trying to give the radio back to Ally, Johnny had shoved Daniel to the ground just because Daniel was trying to help Ally from that bully. The scene with the pie is disposable and unnecessary, but the scene in which Daniel asks Johnny about his motives, and the one in which Bobby throws his belt at Kreese, should absolutely not have been cut. They are hugely important scenes, because they show that their bullying behaviour is not who they really are, and they allow the audience to have a better understanding of the characters, as well as the hold Kreese has over them.
