i remember not understanding that scene when I first saw the movie. It was the summer between sixth and seventh grade and I had not yet learned that there were concentration camps in the US during World War Two. I don't think many people understood, it was never taught in school or talked about much.

Cobra Kai is perhaps the best thing that connected my generation with the youth. I was 13 when I saw Karate Kid. I am 50 now and my 11-year-old son and I just finished Cobra Kai season 4. But before we watched Season 1, we first watched the Karate Kid series so my boy understands cobra Kai. Genius. Pure genius. And I appreciate Mr. Miyagi even more.

It will be a very interesting battle this coming season of Cobra Kai. Can't wait!!

@8:30 was an interesting trip down memory lane for me. In the mid 70's I had a Taekwondo instructor that said a similar thing.(not to me but other students)Belts? Belts are for holding your pants up. Your skills are not represented by what color is strapped around your gee. Not to brag, but I was his #1 student because I never questioned anything he said. I trusted him with my life. When other students were off on summer vacations, I was diligently still showing up. Often the only student he had at times. While this was not great for his business, I was thrilled to have the extra attention and time perfecting my skills. When he finally had to close the school do to lack of funds, he presented me a belt that he said might impress someone someday.(had been wearing a white belt the whole time) I told him thanks, but I was never in it for belt degrees. :) In some small aspects, I was already living the story of the Karate Kid long before it was a movie. ;)

As a kid watching this in the 80's we all related and pretty much agreed that Johnny was the bully but with never questioning why. As a 45 year old man watching this YT, this is the very first time my eyes were opened to Kreese's corruption of his students when he told Johnny to "sweep the leg" and you can see Johnny shifting his eyes around trying to process the evil that he's just been told to perform. What a nuance that totally passed me by all these years.

I think one of the things that also helped this movie is the popularity of Star Wars. Return of the Jedi had come out the year before and well at the time what kid didn't like Star Wars and the mysticism of the force. Suddenly here comes a movie that makes karate seem almost like magic and Daniel's training took us back to Luke Skywalker's training starting with Obi Wan then Yoda (who like Miyagi also speaks in riddles). But the Karate Kid made martial arts look and feel much like the force in Star Wars. Mr. Miyagi was like a realistic life like Yoda instead of a rubber puppet who methods and philosophy applied more to our world than some galaxy far far away. Karate was a real thing and every kid wanted to be a Jedi, well what is the next best thing? Being a Karate master.

I loved this movie in the 80s and I still love it. It peaked my interest in Karate. I am close to my level 6 in Krav Maga, and Krav Maga is a lot like Cobra Kai. It's hardcore fighting that is about devastating attacks more than defense. In fact, the motto in our class is 'There is no defense without an offensive attack.'

I have to say Pat was great at what he did as an actor. The reason i say this because he made me like the miyagi character instead of Pat. Crazy as it sounds.

Yes Mr Miyagi lives on forever! Played by Mr Pat Morita, Especially with this generation! But it’s also a reminder of being a young preteen in the 80’s.

RIP --Pat Morita . .. . what an awesome Human Being, I'm 45 now, I watched the Karate Kid as a Teen, Bruce Lee is the Reason I got into Martial Arts----But Karate Kid ---I Feel kept me in it. It Inspired me. I felt like that at those Karate tournaments in the 90's Nervous, scared, excited, etc. It Really brings back wonderful memories for me. Then growing up and Teaching Kids and adults Karate and Martial arts was a Blessing. I Loved this Movie and Series too, Cobra Kai-- An awesome come back and continuation of the saga and introducing it to all the Millennials too is pretty awesome. My 13 year old son Loves it too. 😊 An AWESOME 80'S FILM a CLASSIC that will go down in History!!!!

19:05 I feel like Johnny should have said that to Dan in Cobra Kai when Dan is drunk and at Johnny's place after Silver beat him up: "In case you don't remember, I handed you the trophy when you won that day. I always thought you were the better man. Be the better man now."
