She was relevant wayyyy before Antoine Fischer. She had already been a series regular on two different tv shows and been in like 10 different films. She just wasn't doing all black films.

Well, maybe those were Kareem's questions and he wanted to make sure to get those in. Kareem is not a very charismatic public speaker, although, he's obviously super intelligent and quite well spoken. Another great, great former NBA player, Julius "Dr. J" Erving is quite similar to Kareеm Abdul Jabbar in that sense.

I saw the film last night in San Francisco. August Wilson would be proud of the work of Denzel Washington as an actor and a director. Viola Davis and the entire cast was brilliant. In my mind, we all have Troy Mixson, Rose Mixson, and Garbriel Mixson's in our families. I'm hoping that fathers and sons go see this film, and perhaps learn how to better communicate with each other. Fathers, please, help your sons become strong men. Sons, please learn the ways of your father ( good and bad) and decide what you will and won't do/be as a man. Having said that, I know it's not easy ( My son is 21 years old and father/son relationships can be challenging, but beautiful.) Thank you, August Wilson ( may you R.I.P.) Thank you Denzel Washington for being the man that you are. You and your beautiful wife Pauletta (another brilliant talented sister) have raised sons, and to me, you two are remarkable parents! Viola Davis, you are truly a woman w/ heart and soul, talented, and you make us sisters proud! Thank you Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for asking spot on questions! Bravo!

I've read the book. my favorite scene is when he says it's not easy for him to admit he's been standing in the spot for 18 yrs. as a 55 yr old woman who's been a stay at home mom for 24 yrs sacrificing all my desires, and battling diabetes, I feel like I'm not enjoying life
@mr1nyc
@mr1nyc 7 жыл бұрын
gemini Carolyn Would you have sacrificed your family to pursue those desires? How would you feel then? There's more desires where those came from. Chasing after happiness is neverending. Be proud of who you are and the choices you've made. I bet someone out there is happy you made the choices you did.

Graeme ONeil I can understand where you are coming, but professional Artists like these dont "Eat Up", interviewers. Its very rarely that we catch them being hard in interviews, and its normally when the interviewer is crossing the line or being disrespectful. This interview is great because Kareem asked good questions and Viola & Denzel had great responses. Other than the volume, (a tech issue or mic issue ), this interview was very natural, easy going and interesting to listen to.

This is a treasure trove. I absolutely loved what Viola said about Rose being a strong woman and choices. You see, we're all seeing so called "empowering" films for women. But, these stories are very one dimensiaonl and they show us successful women who get everything they want. They dont show us the messy, complicated, not so great side to women. Truth is, women can be just as complicated as anyone. But the audience wants to see a film that reassures them that women are superior and that fmeminism is about kicking ass all the time. It still taps into the feel good aspect of cinema. But Viola is brave to step into these roles. When she said "Rose is strong" I was like yessssss. Rose has very little choices, in fact no choices at all. You can't expect her to go from zero to hero in the play. She does the best she humanly can.

I agree. It's like damn Jabbar you revealing everything with your big mouth! Luckily, I saw the play in Pasadena, California years ago. Laurence Fishbourne played Troy (Denzel) and Angela Bassett played Rose (Viola). Kareem asks questions assuming a lot of people have SEEN the play and already know the story. He's a knucklehead for that.

I always loved and respected Kareem, not only as a basketball legend, but as the highly intelligent man that he truly is. But the problem I have when he conducts interviews is that he invariably reads his questions for the interview from cards. In doing so, it makes the interview seem robotic and a bit tedious and vapid. In my opinion, he should cease reading his questions and be more direct.

Kareem Abdul Jabbar is just like Shannon Sharp, and most recently Stephen A Smith, but Denzel Washington and Viola Davis are speaking Dez Bryant talk. He (Kareem) tries to tie in race or direct the interview in a direction that is going to feed his default narrative... By even providing a glimpse into why he is by referencing every black athlete (which by today standards is dominanted by) feels his way or insinuating goes thru similar paths... Farther could be from the truth. Evidence? Denzel and Viola have an interpective on the intent of the story they played and the conclusion in their perception is truth. This is not about sending a message to White people/America, that this is how a Black family lives or the whys... This is just a struggling family dealing with a prideful lion who is the center of all attention dealing with the crookeds and the straights... Even if at many times it is self inflicted. This is just a struggling family coexisting with one another surrounded by not only the sins of the father, but also by his skewed percetion of fairness in circumstances due to his dealing with what he believes is racism. However, at the end (of the movie) a seed still blooms into a flower regardless of the weed that tries to choke the space around it. Much RESPECT for DENZEL & VIOLA!
