I really think that Kareem was Coach Wooden’s greatest success story. I think he was proud of all of his students, but you could just see they way that he looked at Kareem. There was something special between the connection they had as a player and a coach. RIP Coach Wooden. You will never be forgotten. ❤️

The audiobook is really good and narrated by Kareem himself. Definitely worth buying!

I love Kareem, a great (maybe the best) basketball player. But a better human being. Thoughtful, sensitive, mentally tough and highly intelligent.

Wait a minute...He came from the home of the Klan in Indiana.....but he didn't know that black people went through those things? How does that work?

Was Edgar Lacy discussed in the book ? Was he mentioned by Wooden ? or just Jabbar ? If mentioned at all. He was black and entered UCLA 3 years or 4 before Jabbar
@lwmson
@lwmson Жыл бұрын
Yes. He and Jabbar were both named to the same high school all-America team, even though Kareem, then Lew Alcindor, was only a sophomore. Lacy left UCLA after Wooden benched him in that famous UCLA-Houston game in 1968. Wooden also publicly criticized Lacy's play in that game, prompting him to quit the team. Lacy then signed with the LA Stars of the ABA and in doing so, he was the only athlete to play high school, college, and pro in the same city.

@@lwmson Thank you Joe, I was aware of Edgar's career and the Houston game. But Wooden never talk about Edgar again. I like Bob Knight and others am not a Big Wooden Fan. He won with Sam Gilbert behind the scenes

@@stever1791 And having Jabbar and Walton, arguably the two greatest centers in college basketball history, helped as well. In 2008, Wooden apologized by saying, ""I'm sorry I said that. It hurt him, and that's why he quit. I was very disappointed. Edgar was a fine boy." Lacy I understand went on to earn a law degree after retiring from basketball, but I don't think he ever passed the bar and went into practice.

@@lwmson I didn't know Wooden apologize. I heard he sent Lew Alcindor up to the Apartment to try to talk Edgar into staying with the team. Well, Im glad Wooden reached out to him. Edgar's niece reached out to me and said That he didn't get his law degree and was living in Sacramento . I think this was back in 2011 The year Edgar died. Thanks for the response !

Maybe Dem dan could ask Kareem, "Hey Lew, Who freed the slaves?" Then, maybe Dem dan could ask Kareem, "Hey, Lew, Who freed the the Jews?" But, I Doubt Dem dan has the INTEGRITY to do so.

after listening to stories of racism, I knew one day I myself was experiencing it when I was treated rudely at a grocery check out. Then I realized I was white and so was the clerk who dissed me. But I still know that if I was black, it would have been racism.

chris wirth So is your point that racism isn’t real? What are you trying to say man?
@cheliooceanstrength4657
@cheliooceanstrength4657 6 жыл бұрын
No, just hugely overstated. Blacks have become far more racist than whites in the last two decades or so. I think its hurting them. But they are only partly to blame. The Democratic party created a devious plan to buy votes from them with entitlements under FDR and LBJ, two of the biggest racists in history. But to do so they had to cleverly switch the blame for their party's horrible history of racism onto the party of emancipation, the Republicans. Its been very effective if the whole purpose is your political career. Lots of low information voters out there fall right in line with that foolish thinking.

A Person... racism exists of course... its basically from both sides.. I experienced couple of discriminating incidents while riding public bus that passes by black people neighborhood... so basically there are white racist assholes and black racist assholes as well.. the solution is to ignore both because they are not worth mentioning in our discussions anymore in this century
@cheliooceanstrength4657
@cheliooceanstrength4657 5 жыл бұрын
Not true on both counts. One; what is called racism is almost always cultural, not race i.e. color of skin, because no one cares about color. D'souza's skin is darker than most Afro-Americans. Everyone cares about behavior and behavior is cultural. Two, we should never ignore cultural, because it is worth debating. Some are better than others. The real problem is moral relativism and moral absolutism. This determines how we and our subcultures behave. Biblically this is termed licentiousness vs legalism. Both are wrong, but cant be ignored either because it is a battle every person fights, first from within and then from without. Jesus seemed to be more sympathetic to one than the other, but still died on the cross for both.
