Early days of treating eating disorders. Karen rather fell to the psychiatric community not knowing quite enough or how lethal the disorders can be. Treatment and support is MUCH better now (even mid-plague) and most folks with such disorders can overcome them. Karen's suffering and her leaving this world raised awareness and urgency, and saved lives.

Despite her incredible voice and singing talent, she always considered herself a drummer first and foremost.

She did NOT want to be the focus of the group but even though Richard produced and arranged all their stuff she quickly became the face of the group. Both were extremely talented.

Yep they had to push her to get her out from behind the drum kit. She was more comfortable there.

I noticed that too. Her anorexia is clear on this video. Very sad that this talented and lovely woman suffered so much and died so young.

It was just Karen and Richard, he’s 4 years her senior. The guy on the second set of drums accompanying Karen is Cubby O’Brien. To the folks my age and a little older he was on The Mickey Mouse Club the OG edition in the 1950’s. I’m sure there’s video of the intro here somewhere with … Cubby!

Cubby was also an original Mouseketeer. He played the drums a lot on the original Mickey Mouse Club when he was a kid.

There was a critic early on that called her the chubby one. That is what started her eating disorder.

She had a mental disorder. That's why she died. Her circumstances were not all that different from many others.

That's a little harsh. I do remember the day I found out she had died very clearly. So sad.

She had actually sought help and was eating to gain weight but she had done too much damage to her heart and died from heart failure.

Her brother was an asshole!

Richard was struggling with addiction issues of his own; Karen out front singing was easy money. Karen behind the drums was a novelty act.

Musical technology has become a substitute for musical talent in the 21st century. Recording artists are actually able to hide the fact that they can't do what you think they can do, thanks to modern technology. None of today's pop stars would still be able to sing around the campfire the way they sound on the radio. Many of us are old enough to remember a time when this would not be the case. OK boomer? Sheeit. Get the hell off my lawn. And take your no-talent autotuned "singers" with you.
