Karen Confrontation over Drone Flight in NO FLY zone over Private Property

A local real estate agent asked me to drone film a property, but it has turned out to be a challenge as the private property is located in a blue zone (no-fly zone). Therefore, permission for flight must be obtained from the Defense Command §13 BEK 1649. But that's not the only problem. As you can see in the video, the biggest challenge is avoiding confrontation with the neighbor and being allowed to carry out the task.

Because they see military drone footage on the TV, and think that EVERY drone has a 5000x zoom Infra Red, thermal imaging camera that can see through walls and roofs. Had a similar experience when a customer wanted drone footage of their property. Ive gotten to know ATC (Air Traffic Control) quite well since Controlled Air Space is 5-7 miles radius and 90% of my drone flights happens in that area. First thing I would do is call ATC or in your case the Castle. Second I would call local law enforcement let them know what you are doing and to stand by. Here in the US, "Interfering with a flight crew is a federal crime and can bring severe penalties, including years in prison and massive fines." Believe it or not Drones are air craft, and you as a drone pilot, your work can not be interupeted. That's why commercial drone pilots need to be registered with the FAA, but being international I don't know the laws in Denmark. Smart move with the body camera. I had an "angry neighbor" claiming I was spying on him and he was going to shoot my drone down. Shooting down an airplane is a big No No! I explained to him that shooting down my drone was no different than shooting down a Boeing 373 or a Cessna. He disagreed and I called the local law enforcement, and they explained to him the exact same thing and arrested him....he must have plead guilty cause I never got a summons/suponea

Thank you for sharing this. In the USA we have a federal law that says (for safety) you cannot interfere with the pilot or operation of an aircraft. There is no exception cutout for drones. Do you have a similar rule in your country? I prefer deescalation as you tried, but after that idiot continued to waste your valuable time, it would have been interesting to see how he would react to a statement "if you insist on continuing with interfering with my job I will call the police and quote to them the law that no person may interfere with a safe operation of an aircraft. We'll see if you will be charged, is that your preference?"

That is because they believe drones can film them taking a dump in their garden or any kind of embarrassing act, they think drones will film their kids, pets or relatives doing stuff they shouldn't, or just something cringe enough to by wireless. So they are desperately trying to protect their privacy, while making themselves kind of suspicious.

Henrik, you managed the situation very well! What I hoped I would have done, was being a bit more “aggressive”: Let me land the drone, then we can talk. You can see my permissions and take a photo of them (I wouldn’t hand it over, unless I also had another copy). If I show you my flight log and we establish that I didn’t fly over your property are we then okay? If not then I will call the police and ask them to settle this. Right now you are disturbing a pilot at work. If he still was arguing then let him know that the body cam is recording everything and he is now doing a violation which will also be a part of the police report. And then try to ignore him until the police hopefully arrives.

Really depends on the local laws and the circumstances. Some States in the US have laws against flying drones over private property that is inaccessible to the public. Other States have no such laws. Many States have privacy laws that forbid using drones to view/record inside windows with the intent to violate someone's privacy. In any event the only thing someone can do if they think a drone is violating the law is call the police. It is a federal crime to damage/take down the drone or disrupt the pilot, causing a flight incident.
@paradoxicalcat7173
@paradoxicalcat7173 29 күн бұрын
@@Knypsterino In the EU, you can fly over private land, including in residential areas. What you can't do is record video/take pictures, or otherwise do anything that invades privacy. The act of overflying (even hovering) though is perfectly fine, so long as you are not doing so dangerously, or to intimidate or otherwise use the drone itself to cause harassment. e.g., if you fly over a residential area and hover to take pictures of the area, that is totally legitimate. Even photos of the built-up area are fine, so long as you do not publish anything that breaches someone's privacy. Unless you're doing things you shouldn't, a drone is no more invasive than all the recon satellites flying overhead everyday. Just fire up Google maps and Google Streetview. O can stand on the street and take whatever photos I want as is it deemed a public space. What I can't do is point my camera to look in windows, or stand outside your house and photograph it specifically, as that enters the realm of breaching privacy. Even Ring doorbell cameras are now getting hit with the law on breaching privacy, because they are recording audio at great distances and looking into people's houses due to the angle/aspect of the camera.

You are extremely patient with that “Karen” character. I can’t say exactly what I’d do, maybe just tell him to call the police if he has a problem and to leave me the fu-k alone. After that, I would try to ignore him and continue with the job. Because you had a body cam on, if he messed with you while you flew, I think he would be the one in trouble (after calling the police) Years ago, as a young man, I would have just started the conversation telling him to “F- Off” 😆
@awwaldo
@awwaldo Ай бұрын
Here in the USA, I would be afraid to give my papers to a "Karen" for fear he would leave with them or tear them up. If it's not a private number, I would have given him the phone number to the castle guard (that never answered) and tell him to call them if he has any questions. Some of the pilot's here, have an information sheet printed and laminated. If someone one comes up during a flight, they give it to them to read while they continue to safely fly their drone. It will have information like: 1) I'm an FAA certified pilot. 2) It's a Federal crime to interfere with this flight. 3) (etc...)

Surprisingly, if there is a Karen somewhere, HEO is always nearby... I thought about what I would have done differently and I have to say that it's clear that you have a certain amount of experience here. I would have done teh same in mentioning the police and offer support in doing so. It was probably effective. In my opinion, open communication with the direct passing on of personal information is also good for de-escalation. Two things go through my mind. On the one hand, I wonder what would have happened if he had realized that you were filming him. From his perspective, if you're not allowed to film his house, filming him during the confrontation is most likely not allowed either. The second thing that surprises me is that you land so extremely close to him that he could have easily destroyed the drone with one kick. Of course that wouldn't be understandable, but that's not his general reaction either...

As long as I respect the basic privacy laws, the TC apps clears the flight and I have permission to takeoff/land from the property owner there is nothing to contest. The basic nosey would be experts will simply get a response that all is legal and they can call the police if they wish to do so. Try to be nice but if it goes south stop the conversation and let the authorities handle it. More public education is needed as drones are becoming more popular.

So far no flying has met anything else then curiosity. Starting up a business with an estate agent I'm all ears for Your experience. As far as I've got it (Sweden) no landowner owns the air above their property. That belongs to air traffic authorities. Even taking a pass by foto is okey but not "studying" any private property and house. Just made a flight at 100 meters, in a control zone, recording quite some land, properties, according to the landowner 's interest from which property the flight was performed. Be careful leaving drones around Karens. Sometimes they are very aggressive and want to damage your drones. I had a very bad encounter in the UK

not sure your laws but here in the US you can fly over private property without permission as the people do not own the airspace as it is controlled by the FAA.

As you mention, in US it's FAA regulations. In Europe it's EASA + national regulations & laws = mucho complicado ;-). Distances and open land in US is plenty, in Europe not so much,. Common ground is that the public or private individuals often are paranoid and /or want to rule the world according to their private interrest (singularity). In US there is Karens. They have spread to Denmark. I've personally been confronted by our law enforcement who, in general terms, dosn't have an inkling about what drone flying is about, what to be focused on and how to handle the authority they have. They often assume that you are guilty until prowen otherwise; in contrast to the what the laws says: you are innocent until proven guilty.

You can fly or private property now with the latest changes in the regulations, but you need to be above 100 m and have a velocity of 5 m/s

You don’t need a license if you buy Drone that is below 250 g if you are in the EU and I’m pretty sure at least where I am the minimum age is 12

Its not like your flying a predator drone armed with hellfire missiles..... It seems people don't worry about you know real problems and not having their way all day every day.. obviously adult children who were considered "Gifted" and "Unique & Special" but it just comes down to them being miserable because if they cant get what they want they are going to make life miserable because they are misersble.. its crab mentality

Jeg ville ikke engang indgå i en samtale med nogle imens jeg står med min drone, hvis folk er irriteret må de ringe til politiet (held og lykke med det) jeg er typisk væk allerede 15 min efter :D

Why would you notify the castle. You can fly over it they cant do anything. So over the top what most peopme do before flying get other people all anxious and stressed about just going for a quick flight. Completely unessassary steps Iam sorry but a little rediculous for a quick flight around a castle. Your not taking off on the ground of the property only in the air which they have no say over.

Give out flyers before doing the flying on neighboring properties. State on the flyer that you are allowed to fly there, have all the necessary approved documents and that you are a licenced and experienced drone pilot. But even then I think you're just a "Karen" magnet😂

If he thinks your doing something wrong he should just call the Police. Secondly you're far too nice blurring his face out. He's in a public place lets see this Karen
