Well I'm in Germany and I've lived in the US. I found that people are much more scared of, and compliant, in the US. In Europe the police seldom shoot. 🙂

I've seen traffic stops in the Netherlands and they're similar to Germany. People argue back, and the police expect it and go toe to toe with them; they don't simply knock them over and force-cuff them if they don't obey. They only bring out the taser if someone is being unsafe for others (not just for themself), and they shoot almost not at all. Since guns are very, very rare among the general population (either legal or illegal ones), they're usually nowhere near as afraid for their own safety, so they can afford to give suspects a longer lead. Every cop in America knows that he's only one particularly decisive drunk away from leaving his kids orphaned, because if they draw before they talk, he won't have time to protect himself. It makes them understandably touchy in ways that European police aren't.
