The tomb of the unknown soldier is one of the most heavily guarded sites in the whole world. A well-trained carefully selected team of officers known as sentinels are handpicked and chosen to guard the site that holds the remains of the unknown soldier. These guards are always standing ready to defend the tomb from any harm.

I have actually witnessed the changing of the guard several times. I was not in the military. But my father was. My grandfather fought in world war two. Just to watch the movements and the demeanor of the tomb guards is almost entrancing. It feels as if you are in the presence of something sacred. As to why someone would be disrespectful during such a solemn event? You would be surprised at how many people are not hold 'no' in their life. How many people have been spoiled their entire lives. How many people have never gotten an ass beating so they do not understand how serious and damgerous the worls is.

How unfortunate for you that you have so often been in attendance when this statistically improbable phenomenon is transpiring. I am 83 years old. When President Truman decided to drop the Atomic bomb on Japan to end World War II, my Dad came home. A lot of my friends Dad's didn't. Many were lost at sea in the vastness of the Pacific ocean or blown to bits on some muddy, stinking island. Watching these Guards just makes me cry, because I know what they mean. America meddles everywhere, puts dictitors in power to suit its own needs, steals and rapes whole continents, and starts wars everywhere. The UK is no better! Would you like an African country invading you for your resources like England has done all over the world? And the US and UK are one of the most prolific arms dealers, to countries with severe human rights violations. You "try to make the world a better place..." What a load of crap. Talk to soldiers that went to places like Iraq, who lost their friends for wars they feel were unnecessary, and actually made the world less peaceful for no reason.

The Tomb Guard is not a "cool job" it is an extremely physically demanding honor, not a job but a DUTY that MUST always be carried out, those who do it wear no rank, walk in rain, snow etc. To protect the site and uphold a strict atmosphere of respect for those who died horrible, brutal deaths for the simple pleasures of life you take for granted, yet came home as unidentified bodies. It's the very least we can do for those poor souls. Beware any would be vandal, you can and will be shot for such acts at that memorial by a Sentinel, and you would deserve it for the attempt.

@@FreyaTaitWell yes they are actual members of the military (usually highly decorated NCO'S) and it's very important to be able to quickly identify your chain of command, for numerous reasons which I won't go into, but they can wear rank up until they "change the guard" and officially begin sentry duty, since they are guarding the tomb of the unknown soldier, the soldiers are unknown (the remains were unidentifiable along with their rank or anything else about them) and out of a formal sign of respect the sentinels don't display rank insignia, incase they happen out rank anybody they are guarding. The soldiers the tomb represent, gave everything for this country and it's people, they died in horrendous ways, their families never got closure, many of them don't know what ever happened to their loved ones and worst of all since the remains couldn't be identified they couldn't be given the proper funerals or burials that they deserved. The sentinels and the tomb is our way to thank those people, for their sacrifice we reaped the benifits, and it's the very least we can do for those soldiers to whom we owe everything. A little silence and respect to think about that immense gift they gave us and to think about them, and a dignified place to rest in peace, where an offical guard can ensure they are given that respect they deserve more than anyone else.

It boggles the mind that visitors to the Tomb would be throwing water bottles. I suppose the Supreme Court might rule that doing so represented an act of "free speech" which would be a classic example of the extreme margins free speech has taken. There are other things more important than [largely] unlimited speech such as honor, respect, duty, sacrifice, civility, etc. For Americans [or even foreign visitors] to act in such a dishonorable way as to corrupt an act of honoring others are people who should probably be conscripted into military service so they may gain a reasonable degree of understanding and appreciation of what others have given up for them and the proper use of "free speech" which comes with responsibilities to others. Further more, it should NOT be a "request' that people adhere to required decor at such monuments. They should be immediately removed, forcibly if necessary and made an example of.

My cousin was part of the old guard. The tomb is only one rotation they're assigned to. Another assignment is the doors of the White House for visiting dignitaries. My cousin worked that assignment under the first Bush presidency. He received a reprimand because VP Dan Quayle asked him a question. He wasn't permitted to speak, so a response to the VP was out of order. My cousin responded to the VP and then reprimanded, but President Bush found out and had the reprimand revoked stating "it is far more offensive to ignore the conversation of the President and Vice President than to violate the no permissive response" It saved my cousin his duty position in the Old Guard; which takes a lot of hard work and dedication to achieve. There are plenty of instances of public disrespect at the tomb. He had a violation every week because people have lost basic human decency. In 2023, it's even worse but the woke military has become laxed.

I had the privilege of going on an Honor Flight in November 2022. One of the things I saw was the changing of the guard and a wreath laying ceremony. I was so moved by the Honor and respect these soldiers pay to the fallen. This was truly an honor for me. Then to view the rows upon rows upon rows of white markers at Arlington cemetery brought me to tears. All those young people made the ultimate sacrifice to defend our blessed nation. God bless these men and our Nation. We truly need God's blessing and guidance. We need unity; not division during politically divisive times.
