We seem to be having a bad run of it lately and today we had another issue with the bullocks and heifers but hopefully they'll be OK after their treatment.

nice video again Karen, and happy birthday to your dad. youve answered your own question about the wet dung... let them eat away on the straw. It'll firm them up with the fiber and settle their stomachs ph. Its like having a sick tummy and only being allowed eat chocolate. Youd love to get a slice of dry toast! Its probably not helping the pneumonia either. Stress always makes mild problems worse. See you next week i hope😊

Karen....silage looks low dry matter and that would make them loose and if you are giving them a few kgs of meal they will definitely be loose. They dont look ill and I wouldn't be over concerned about a small bit of dirt in their noses. Leave the doors in the shed open as much as you can. Cattle don't feel the cold....draughts yes....but lack of air circulation is deadly. Once cattle are active and eating they are fine. Good luck.

Hi Karen, I have run into that problem with cattle becoming loose after they have been put in for the winter. I always make a few bales of very dry haylage and feed them some of this if I run into this problem. The haylage or hay is great for helping their stomachs to settle. Sometimes the change over from just a grass based diet to a silage and meal diet can be hard on their stomachs, especially when the silage is very rich. Hopefully they will clear up for you soon.

Have to say the same, I always had problems feeding wet second cut silage at the beginning of winter especially if nitrogen was applied to grow the grass, snotty noses cleared up once I started feeding good natural hay. I guess your two weanlings are letting you know that they need some fibre as they prefer eating the straw instead of the silage. It's a pity that straw is so hard got this year as it's an excellent feed and compliments soft grass silage very well. They look a great pen of heifers , they should thrive well on the meal.

Clipping the backs and necks on the cattle helps eliminate a lot of problems with pneumonia and lice etc. Not the easiest task with sucklers. Maybe an anti backing device for the crush would be more beneficial than more holes in the wall. Locked up with TB here as well. but brighter days ahead.. Hopefully.. Keep up the good work and videos when you get a chance.
