Get ready for an enlightening workshop with the renowned Dr. Rich Joseph, a leading figure in healthcare and fitness. With a focus on obesity and metabolic health, Dr. Joseph combines his expertise as a personal trainer with his medical insight to promote wellness. He is the founder of VIM Medicine, where he integrates preventive care with health services, and serves as the Chief Medical Officer at Restore Hyper Wellness.
DESCRIPTION:
In this presentation from Dr. Joseph, he discusses coming from an athletic background with certifications as a trainer and his view of life being a sport. With training in internal medicine, Dr. Joseph’s professional journey has revolved around bridging the gap between the fitness industry and traditional healthcare. His medical practice has always been grounded in a holistic and comprehensive approach, extending to underserved areas. Currently serving as the Chief Medical Officer at Restore Hyper Wellness, Dr. Joseph is committed to integrating diverse wellness therapies and medical services, with a vision to scale this impact. His life mission is centered on empowering individuals and communities, fostering agency over their health.
Challenges with the Current Medical Model:
Dr. Joseph emphasizes that the prevailing medical model is disappointing and deficient, characterized by a highly fragmented framework. He points out that primary care predominantly reacts to disease rather than prioritizing prevention. Routine care rarely emphasizes prevention, guidance, or the development of a long-term plan to maintain and enhance health. A new paradigm is needed to transition from a reactive healthcare model to a proactive one.
Performance Medicine Philosophy and Approach:
Performance medicine focuses on critical practices aimed at enhancing daily well-being and extending one's healthspan and lifespan. To achieve this, it’s important to delve deeply into individuals' value systems, priorities, and both conscious and unconscious beliefs. The aim of performance medicine is to determine the daily practices individuals need to cultivate or eliminate to reach their goals.
The performance medicine approach centers on the immediate and actionable imperative of improving and sustaining physical and mental performance on a daily basis.
Clinical Objectives:
Increase an individual's adaptive capacity throughout life through mind and body training, enable them to effectively handle internal and external challenges, manage stimuli and recovery, and find comfort in discomfort.
Implement strategies and behaviors that reduce the likelihood of physical decline while instilling a sense of agency and well-being. Physical activity is a core pillar of this approach, emphasizing the process over outcomes and embracing delayed gratification, all of which is learned through physical activity.
Clinical Process and Approach:
Dr. Joseph’s approach begins with a comprehensive intake process, covering physiology, psychology, personal preferences, baseline health status, lifestyle factors, behavioral assessment, biometrics, biomarkers, and biomechanical analysis. Subsequently, he collaborates with clients to co-create personalized plans, offering coaching, interval monitoring, and testing. These plans are designed to evolve and adapt as individuals' circumstances, priorities, and goals change.
Access and Equity:
An essential aspect of Dr. Joseph’s mission is to expand and focus on access and equity. He is dedicated to community-based wellness initiatives and resources, understanding the importance of ensuring that access and equity continue to be part of the discussion and plan moving forward.
In conclusion, the performance medicine approach aims to be inclusive, prevention-focused, and a champion for an impvoed care model to enhance health and well-being.
QUESTIONS AND THOUGHTS FOR FURTHER EXPLORATION:
How does the idea of performance medicine as described by Dr. Joseph resonate with you?
What are some goals and priorities that have evolved for you over the years? What are top health and well-being priorities for you presently, acknowledging that these may shift over time?
What are 1-2 of the biggest challenges you face in achieving these goals? What are 1-2 possible solutions to these challenges? What would help support you the most in trying to implement these solutions? Are you willing to ask for help with these to help you achieve success?
