I'm so sorry I've got so much to say that woman who walked down the street with her afro have loads of hair it was very big but when you've got short hair people don't give you any attention will I wear a wig I got so much more attention more men are attracted tell if I've got my little afro and I've always had a small afro and people used to call me a little boy so I don't believe that people think afros look sexy especially if it's like a little African afro that's what I have like a little African kids afro😮😮

@@Peachcobblerr I understand where you're coming from. These days black women depend on wigs because the styling of our hair is hard or it takes time but the thing is we can't keep depending on wigs how will we find ways to take care of our hair if we depend on wigs. My mom always tells me to use wigs because they are easier and take less time even my sister schools in the UK (not london) and they're not many salons for black women (very rare) most black women she sees there wear wigs.

Whether we choose to wear a wig or not, that don't stop the stigma around our hair. When we wear wigs, we're "bald-headed" and "ugly/trying too hard," yet when we don't we're "nappy" and look "dirty." How about we stop stigmatizing black hair all together? Wig or no wig.

My mom put a relaxer in my hair at age 3 and 33 years later I still remember the trauma of having it put in. I relate to this on every dimension! My mother relaxed my hair as a young girl because she found it more “tidy” and “manageable”. I spent 30 years trying to straighten, relax and make it straight. 6 months ago, I did a big chop. It upset many of my close friends and family… I had butt length dead stringy hair. I now have shoulder length wild ringlets and I have never loved my hair as much! Exactly as it is! I’m in the medical field, which makes it even more controversial to walk around with a wild head of curls, but I’ve never been more proud to be me! It’s a journey, full of ups and downs and I’m only at the beginning. My daughters have coilier hair than mine, but I’ve invested time to figure out what their hair loves. I tell them how beautiful it is every day! And I hope they grow to love theirs just as much as I love them!

I had an allergic reaction to perms and started wearing my hair naturally before it became popular. I actually had another Black woman say to me she wouldn't be brave enough to wear her natural hair. I had another Black woman who was a HR executive tell me wouldn't hire me if I came in and interviewed with my hair natural. This was over twenty something years ago and Im glad times have changed. It amazing how ppl can be brainwashed into thinking what is natural about them not normal and that they are less than because of it.

Wow I remember that Blue Ivy fiasco. That was the time when I finally fully understood what my white privilege really meant. To see people of color going In HARD on a freaking toddler, for nothing other than wearing her hair exactly as it grew out of her head, it was so heartbreaking. Can you blame them? They had to survive under far more harsher conditions so, Post Tramatic Slave Syndrome is still an issue. If the media made magazines and talk shows and movies and stories of white people or black people with straight hair or european features and did that for literal generations, and you, by comparison didnt have that, maybe you'd want to conform as well. The self hatred via assimilation is still a thing. But it was survival. They had many other things to worry about. I think that thinking is similar. They taught survival, not freedom.

As a biracial person who lives in a majority white area most of my life, oh let me tell you I have some stories!😂 When fetishisation for mixed babies was at its peak, mostly white women would say fetishising stuff to me. I remember one time a white female classmate of mine came up to me and said “You’re so beautiful, I want a mixed race baby and I want her to look like you BUT I would want her to have looser curly hair.” When I told you I was UNCOMFORTABLE. OH MY GOD. My hair is 3c/4a however I wear it in an Afro because afros are gorgeous and it really suits me. Even when my hair used to be defined, people would tell me it was “too tight” for a mixed race girl. Now I’ve noticed a change. I now get stares of admiration and compliments about my hair wherever I go! Even at school too now and my hair has even encouraged a few fellow black people in my year to wear their hair natural as well. Not only that but I definitely get less fetishising comments. I know we’ve still got a long way to go for equality but it’s lovely seeing things change for the better! Even if it is small! We just need to stay strong and push forward and break down more ignorant barriers holding us back. *WEAR YOUR HAIR THE WAY YOU WANT* because it’s absolutely beautiful no matter how you do it darling.😉❤️ Take care and have a wonderful day!🥰

My sister's first reaction, almost everytime, when she sees a black woman with such a big afro will say it's not their real hair. I used to get where she's coming from cause growing up, we didn't see alot of black people in SA with big beautiful hair unless it was permed not grown naturally. That's probably because we didn't either know how to grow out our natural hair or a lot just dont have much hair to grow out that big. Also she'll say stuff like, "she's probably biracial." Yes, she can be really ignorant and stuck in her way of thinking, sadly.🤦🏽‍♀️ I understand where she's coming from for most of us grew up seeing only African-Americans on TV with such hair, however, it's 2020. There's so many ways to inform self on these things.

All of these “black hair shops” actually started with a Korean hair wig. The wig was the most popular among black women (most likely because of the oppression they were experiencing). So the Koreans who owned the wig decided to start selling other products that appealed to the majority of their customers. Many Koreans (and other types of Asians) own most of the shops to this day. Bare with me on this next part because I don’t know how to explain it in the correct terms. When applying to order products for a business, it can either be approved or denied by the dominant people who have the products in their possession. In this industry, most of these people are Asian. Often times, your name can be the reason you either get approved or denied. For this reason, some black entrepreneurs would disguise their name and use one that sounded more Asian in order to get the approval to receive products.

I did twists, braids (they received compliments at school & in public); but, my girls didn't live in a bubble and my oldest craved to "look like" her peers (predominantly wite students). I refused to allow her a relaxer/perm. By her senior prom time, the choice was hers: natural hair or processed hair...she choose & still chooses "relaxer" processes. So, she's doing NOT what her mother or grandmother preferred and practiced but by her own way. I'm 54yo and am still loving my Natural Crown of roots, while raising my youngest (16).

@VayBabe
@VayBabe 4 жыл бұрын
@@luvlifeamen6047 Hi! My best advice is to always make sure your hair is well moisturized. I deep condition once a week with hot oil treatments. It also helps to drink plenty of water/exercise regularly. Rice water helps SO many women grow/thicken their hair. It definitely works for some & I suggest trying it out yourself, but make sure you know what works best with your hair! Rice water only made my hair dry/brittle. So remember that everyone is different. As long as you are maintaining a healthy routine, your hair should grow an average of half an inch per month--that's 6 inches a year. So don't rush it! Your hair will grow at its own rate, but I know the waiting sucks. I have videos of my own hair journey that I upload from time to time. I hope this helps! God bless!!!

7 years ago, when I got into sixth grade I decided that I wanted to ask my mom to give me bangs and straighten my hair with the Just for me product. Not because I was ashamed, but because I really liked the style. On my first day of sixth grade people treated me normally, they complimented my hair, they wish they had it, and they touched it and played with it. By the time I hit seventh grade, I decided to wear my hair in an Afro, which had now grew extremely big and fluffy because of the way I constantly took care of my hair when it was straightened. On my first day of seventh grade, Not That I wanted my hair to be adored like it was straightened, but people disgustingly stared. People looked at it, and visibly tried to avoid it. A few group of boys and girls even said my hair smelled like used veggie oil. I still had friends who didn’t care about it, and still defended me but I was extremely sad either way. So later on I decided to ask my mom to curl it which happened. I got no criticism, which was okay and a few of the people who said my hair smelled like used veggie oil actually apologized. Even after almost 8 years I don’t know how to feel about that situation, I don’t know if I should call it racism of hair or not. But whatever it should be labeled as, it’s still wrong. And no matter how you keep your hair, it’s beautiful. And you should be able to confidently go out with it however you want without having to be ridiculed, and hurt.

@@nv230 I can't speak for her but I'd like to take a stab at it lol. I don't think it's a secret that [for the most part] light skin is seen as more desirable, in every culture and nationality. Anything "black" or "afrocentric" is more palatable on any race but black, in society ie. braids, dark skin (tanning), big butts, hips, lips... In black culture the closer to white you are, the more your blackness is tolerated. This woman was obviously black but being that she has a lighter complexion, her hair is more tolerable. I see it all the time at work, on tv, wherever. My honest opinion, and I'm entitled to it, is if this woman was dark skinned, the reactions may have been different. Some may still see the hair as ugly on the most attractive woman, but overall it's seen as less unattractive on lighter skin. But side note, that woman is gorgeous and I honestly think ppl were staring at her because of her beauty. And her big beautiful afro just added so much confidence and attractiveness to her. I’m light skin and I still experience a LOT of discrimination in the work place bc of my Afro textured hair. I get comments saying my hair is wild, crazy, it looks like it exploded. I constantly get asked why do I wear my hair like that (as if I chose how my hair grows out my head.) It’s mostly acceptable when my hair is gelled very flat, defined, and has less volume. And I see people who are way lighter than me experience the same thing. We all experience the same hate, but perhaps it is worse for dark skins. I would never know bc I’m not dark skin. But I feel sometimes people like to belittle others struggle bc of the shade of black they are and that’s not fair. It doesn’t make it hurt any less. At the end of the day we are all black people who face discrimination and we should stick together. Perhaps the issue is texurism. Ask yourself why are Indians and some are darker than a lot of us black people considered one of the most beautiful people in the world. They have long black thick hair and it is beautiful. But I bet if they had Afro textured hair (also beautiful) it would be a different story. Dark skin girls with 3c hair they are seen as more beautiful than a dark skin girl with 4c hair (in reality they are both beautiful black queens). Dark skins girls with 3c hair will often gets asked of their ethnicity bc they don’t believe a dark skin girl can be completely black and have 3c hair. I often see that texurism is often an issue in the natural hair black community, this video shows some clear examples of that. If you have HEALTHY hair you have GOOD hair regardless of your hair type. I’m not denying that colorism is not an issue in the black community. I just wasn’t sure if it is an issue when referring to natural hair. But judging from the comments I think it is. However I’m still not to familiar with it.

LinnErellie haha actually that is false. Yes, a lot of black women are insecure about their hair but their made to be. There has been a new wave of acceptance in the last 5years but before then the ideal standard for everything, not just hair, was white features. It’s very naive to say it’s just insecurity, when In reality it’s been ingrained in their mind that their beauty doesn’t match up for literally centuries and this is coming from a white girl. I see the propaganda in the entertainment industry that’s made to hate black women. It happens even today and you have to be quite blind if you don’t see it.

So I decided to loc my hair to take the proverbial and now I am the Director, the majority of the black women at work wear natural hear now. Go figure!
