I think, in principle, I liked the third (? guy he walked on the beach with) guy's basic point the most; to just be comfortable with you and don't worry so much about trying to be liked by others. But in practice, that's not so simple. I think most people enjoy and want to be liked by others. Also, it is a part of personal growth to be able to cultivate your strengths and work on improving in areas that you're weak in. I guess what he is really trying to say is something like, 'do what you need to do to be able to like yourself but don't define whether you like yourself primarily from whether you think others like you.'

@TheMattmatic Why would that not be accurate? I'd say at least 5% of the population is dumber than Forrest Gump, and there could very easily be another 10% on his level. Nothing wrong with that but just in America alone there are millions of people who lack any form of comprehension or critical thinking.. just look at politics in the past years 😅
@ericforsyth
@ericforsyth 2 жыл бұрын
@@taxicorky: Gump had an IQ of 75. In traditional classification, Forrest would've been classified as a moron or borderline moron. Karl would've been "borderline" or dull. Wechsler's 1981 Classification would've classified Forrest as borderline mentally retarded and Karl as "Low average". The current Wechsler classification would have Forrest as Borderline (but with "Extremely Low" as what he borders, not "Mentally Retarded") and Karl as Low average. A difference of 8 IQ is more than half a standard deviation, so that's very significant.

I know Ricky and Steve are his mates and clearly love the guy, but sometimes I think they get a bit carried away with Karl almost to the point of bullying. Case and point, “Hey Karl, we’re wanting to do a special where you basically try to figure out why you’re so dumb.”
@xzonia1
@xzonia1 2 жыл бұрын
Karl's said before that it doesn't bother him, but then in this special he said he'd like to be smarter because it does bother him sometimes that people are mean to him. I think Karl is just a nice guy trying to get along with others the best he can, and really the smarter people around him should pick up the slack more and be kinder to him. But then again, perhaps it is a kindness of a sort to give Karl a show like this, as it gives him the opportunity to earn more money than he would at a normal 9 to 5 job, and a selling hook like “Hey Karl, we’re wanting to do a special where you basically try to figure out why you’re so dumb” is the sort of thing networks would pay to produce. I don't know. I am glad they made the show, though, because I really love watching Karl go about doing stuff. :)
@CptCrash21
@CptCrash21 2 жыл бұрын
Are you referencing this special? Because they didn't have anything to do with this production apart from Ricky's brief appearance. BBC reached out to Karl and wanted to do some stuff with him (it also included a series of shorts called "3 minute wonder").

I can totally agree with some of the feelings that Karl expressed in this piece. I can't stand the feeling that everyone around me is in on some secret understanding that I just can't grasp. Like most everyone is on the same page with one another and I'm the odd one out. I'm talking just from a point of an 'understanding of what is going on around you' perspective.. not talking behaviorally. Because, of course, if the majority are involved in bad things, then I'm happy to be the odd one out in that case. The majority isn't always right. Hmm.. now that I wrote this I realize it is a tough thing to actually describe and pin down. I guess what I'm trying to say is - I don't like feeling like I am not a part of the group because of some inadequacy unique to me; I'd rather be able to say that I can't relate to the group because the group are all idiots :)

@settledown5392

Totally agree. Love Karl, but by traditional standards an 83 IQ would make him basically intellectually disabled, and would put him in the same intelligence range of a 8-10 year old lol. He's clearly more intelligent than that, to the point of kind of being a comedic genius. So he just needs to stay on his own path.....because intellectual pursuits likely won't work out for him. Everyone has their own path.
@TheMattmatic
@TheMattmatic 2 жыл бұрын
@@settledown5392 83 IQ is not that low, having an IQ of 85 puts you at the 15th percentile. It would not make him the intellectual level of an 8 year old, that would be more like IQ 65 or so. You can have a job and function in society without help with an IQ of 85.

He said he just guessed many of the answers since they were multiple choice, so he didn't even try to engage his brain, that might be because he couldn't, but maybe he's just lazy. He doesn't seem stupid in his TV programs, he often says things that would take a really capable brain to come up with.

IQ tests are useful in general but incredibly limited means of measuring intelligence. If you don't have a formal education it's difficult to measure intelligence with logic puzzles because you're measuring up against the average person who *already* has a sense of how to solve these kinds of questions. If Karl was groomed for university studying for SATs he'd easily get 10-15 points higher just from being used to the questions.

The last person he met, the author Will Self, has a very dry, dark humour and was more making fun of Karl than anything else. Tony Benn, who Will Self mentioned, was a Labour Party (left-wing) Member of Parliament (MP). He was actually a nobleman, which meant he wasn't allowed to become an MP; so Tony Benn went through the courts to be able to have the right to do so. Tony Benn also famously opposed his party's leader and Prime Minister at the time - Tony Blair - over the Iraq War and although he died before 2016, Tony Benn would likely have supported Brexit; which is unusual for Labour MPs.

Karl is fine the way he is. World traveler and experienced more than most humans ever will. It’s kinda sad he doesn’t see his own worth and value. Although Ricky never helped in that department either 😕

Oh cammon man...83? Karl... you are great man, great and good man, fu...k that score, you're not that number. I took Mensa IQ test in college, I got 128... For some that's high, above average and it is, and ofcourse some people will get even higher, so what, am I that number, do I have to place myself beneath them in the start, or above you? No Karl... we walk trough this life till the end, and we should walk it with dignity, and you surely have it. Greets from to you falks, from Croatia (Europe).

128 is very good, it means you're smarter than most of the people you will ever meet, but not as smart as those people you meet and think, "damn, that guys smart af".
