James Kalm is out on a brisk late April afternoon aimlessly drifting through the East Village and the lower East Side. Although he’d started out with vague ideas about shows he’d like to visit, the cosmic current of circulation through the city is directing him in unexpected ways. First stop is a tour through another Karl Wirsum show. Kalm brought viewers along for a viewing of the other half of this show last week at Matthew Marks, and it was pure happenstance that he caught the last hour of this show at Derek Eller. Down to the Two Bridges neighborhood, where we walk through a mini retrospective of Mira Schor titled “WET”. Featuring works from Schor’s distinguished career of nearly fifty years, “WET” references the body fluids and “goop” of the female body, as well as the nature and potential of paint to express the experience of living in such a body. On to Stanton Street and a visit to the new JJ Murphy Gallery. “Looking Back at Tomorrow” is Brickhouse’s first solo show in New York in nearly ten years. Many of these quirky works have been accumulating paint and ideas for years, and the resulting pictures have a surface the appears almost geological, rather than painterly. A musical introduction is provided by Jimi Celest. This program was recorded April 20, 2024. #jameskalmreport #jameskalmroughcut #lorenmunk

Great episode this week, full of street life, musicianship and three very different artists, all excellent in their own individual ways. Loved all the work in all the shows. Thanks for bringing them to my attention, James and Kate.

Three juicy shows, each on far ends of an art spectrum graph. Nothing but gratitude and rapt attention as you toured each show, dropping pearls of wisdom and art history remembrances. Loved the 5.1 Surround Sound effect of the peanut gallery (starting around 32:40) auto-correcting and amending your narration - heh heh. Great bonus feature of the JJ interview outside the gallery. Thanks so much James, and Kate!

Thank you Kate! I was hoping you would cover the Farrell Brickhouse show and glad you did. I'm a fan of his work. Although I am somewhat familiar with the Harry Who, Karl Wirsum is an artist I was not really familiar with. So it was interesting to see the recent shows. The shaped Karl Wirsum painting - have you heard the word/bird - made me think a little bit of Elizabeth Murray. Thanks for your half ass reporting! Always a pleasure to watch.

At about 13:30 the bird referenced may be related to the song "Surfin' Bird" Another great video. Thank you Kate

Yes I remember going to Farrell’s opening of his show at Max Protetch in 1979. I saw it after a late Guston show at the Barbizon Hotel at McKee’s. Both shows made a big impression on me then. I also went to Farrell’s studio at that time but have only connected with him through Facebook and Instagram since then. It’s great that he now has this show. His work reminds me more of Gandy Brodie’s than Soutine’s or Auerbach’s. Thank you Kate.

Wow, David McKee Gallery at the Barbizon Hotel, that's a trip down memory lane. I saw both those shows too. And yes, Gandy Brodie would be an apt reference (I should suggest something to Steven Harvey along these lines...).
