Is 1800p a viable alternative to 4K? (using the GTX 1070)

In today's video I see if 1800p is a viable alternative to native 4K on PC. As I said in the video i ran these benchmarks using NVIDA'S DSR but played the games on a friends 4K TV to test image quality. The NVIDIA DSR resolution was an odd 3325x1871 which is slightly above 1800p.
All footage was recorded in 1800p and up-scaled to 4K.

1800p in the future will be the ultimate sweet spot for both resolution and framerate when ps5 and x series come out. The option when combined with sharpening will stand out against future consoles

I come from the future to tell you... you are absolutely correct. I have an i7 10th gen with an RTX 3080 and 32gb of ram and I have been struggling to get any game to maintain 4k 60fps with high or maxed out graphics. I tested out a new RTX 4080 and it's still hard to do. However... there is one key part to this... using a sharpening filter with 1800p. I enabled that in all my games and I seriously can't tell the difference between 4K and 1800p. Plus, my games have all gained about 20-40% more FPS.

I've got an rx 5700xt and although it can run 4k, the 8gb vram causes stutters, it seems that the same 8gb vram handle much better in 1800p with not a huge fidelity loss, pretty happy I tested it

I was playing with resolutions with my Vega 64 Asus Strix OC. High details 4K is doable but that push card to it's limits. Sweet spot is 1800p and at first glance i can't tell difference between two resolutions but can definitely feel fps gains. Great video.

I have an LG27UD68-P, and I don't even have to add a custom res for 1800p. I use 1800p in many newer titles on my vega 64, especially FPS games, as I like making sure my fps is well over 60. I can run many games at native 4k, but with fps drops into the 40's, I can be brutal. As you said, I would be hard pressed to see the difference between 1800p and 4k on my monitor, so I take the extra frames unless it is a super easy to run game, or slow paced single player game. Nice video!

TV's have upscaling while monitors don't, 1080p gaming looks great on a 4k TV because of that nice upscaling, while it looks really blurry on a 4k monitor, all those extra features of TV's add to input lag though, the current best input lag for a 4k IPS TV is 12-14ms and it's 3-4ms for a 4k IPS monitor, personally I wish monitors came with an upscaler so you could decide when you want that upscaling vs when you need the response time to be lowest. Viewing 1800p on your friends 4k TV won't look that much different due to the upscaling while on my Acer Predator XB271HK monitor you can clearly see a difference between 1800p and 2160p

What about the difference between 1800p on a 14inch laptop vs 1600p on a 16inch laptop screen. Is it noticeable?

Great work mate, I'm using 4k 40inch as my primary monitor for works with GTX 970. Served me well, but once I play games, it screams for upgrade. Since GTX 1080 is too expensive for me, glad to see that 1070 could hold near 60fps in 1800p in AAA games.

I know I'm 3 years too late, but why would you possibly choose a 24 inch 4k monitor over say a 1440p 120hz monitor?? Resolution is relative to the size of the screen therefore 4k on a 55 inch TV is way more noticeable than a 24 inch monitor. Therefore the refresh rate would very easily be the better factor to focus on for a small screen, whereas if you were say a console user with a 55 inch TV you may want those extra pixels over the frames.

how do you use dsr to scale down from 4k when you have a 4k monitor?

4K at 24 inch is a waste of money. You would have to look at the display from a very short distance to see the pixels. For 4K go 28 inch or higher.

The point is that you cannot see the pixels, though I agree, 4k at 24" might be a bit overkill

Someday I hope to own a 2K, 27", 144hz, good brand... that's currently around $600-$700ish. Luckily, I'm a patient man. Wish it was also IPS, but can't get 144hz without going TN (at that price).

+W Bennet I dont even have hardware that can push my favorite games to 144fps, at least not while keeping the video settings towards the high end. I'm looking for something that can fit into an affordable build and that will balance high fidelity and high frames (2k @ 90hz would be great). You're right though, its all just a matter of time.

My hardware lacks too (gtx 1060 6 gb), so the question is.... exactly HOW LOW of graphics is needed to get for 60+ fps at 2K resolution with big game titles on cards like the 970, 1060 and Karl's 1070? I don't need Anti Alias (especially at 2K resolution) and medium graphics works. I'd guess a 1060 could get respectable frames, but it probably doesn't matter anyway since by time that kind of monitor is $300ish, we'll all be needing a better gpu anyway. )

i dont really get it. but i guess its preference. im looking at 27 in 1440p 144hz monitor at 1ms. much better framerates and looks really good. solid 4k 60 fps is still few years away. also many games arent really made for 4k . if a games textures sucks dont matter the resolution.

+Shima Shimanoseki I think it's just a matter of preference. I don't play many games that can even achieve high frame rates but I totally understand why people would want that. For me 1800p testing really pushed me towards upgrading but I'm not ready to make the jump yet

i changed it on my samsung 4k uhd tv it looks better then 4k or 1440p @ 50hz almost as if thats what the tv was meant to work at on a pc

thats what I'm rockin too... saving up for basically a whole new system since my upgrade comparability is pretty limited. hoping for a new monitor to go with it.
