Wind simulation seems to be a commonly misunderstood concept so here's why you might want it on your rig and also why you shouldn't write sarcastic comments before you understand what you're talking about! ;)

Perfect summation at 9:12. It is all about the experience. I will not have the opportunity in my life to own or race a GT3 car. This hobby affords us the fortunate opportunity to experience a small portion of the exhilaration in motorsports. I enjoy my wind simulator as it adds that little extra immersion; plus, the cooling effect is a bonus. Great video Karl!

I don’t really understand why anyone wouldn’t want the sensation of forward movement in a cockpit simulation, even if it’s ‘not quite right’. It’s particularly effective in VR and I’ve found can even help prevent motion sickness.

I just got into vr and my first time doing a rally run I got sick 😮😮 within a few turns and stopped!! Since then it's gotten much better but i think there speakers will help as well for more immersion.

well said Karl, and for all those who never understand, this is the reason why this is called SIMULATION, it is not real, you will never feel the same forces of a real race car, that is impossible, that is the reason why companies and engineers Even normal and very creative people use our brain's shortcuts to give you a close feeling, wind simulator, butckikers, bodyshackers, motion rigs, virtual reality, etc... all of these are designed for trick your brain and provide a feeling close to that reality, the rest of the job, your brain will fill it with the passion you might have for sim racing and your body trying to convence your senses that we are moving but no.

Hi again, actually I found a way to add this additional 'speed feedback' to my ring. The Simhub application supports Gran Turismo 7 for example. All you need to do is connect a seperate PC to the same local network your Playstation is connected to. The windsim I've purchased is the one from REDION. But the PC version and not the console version they offer as well. As soon as I have it installed I will share my experience. - But once again thanks for you great explanation. To what it all boils down to is simply the wrong naming 'wind simulation'. Instead of that I would rather call ist speed simulation. Because that's what it is.

@R83TV 3 жыл бұрын
I just have 1 single fan infront of me 1 speed to make me feel direction in VR so I don't get motion sickness. But I also mostly drive open wheel so it gives me the airflow (still 1 speed) and even that adds to the immersion. I'd love a setup that did more but this simple 1 fan is actually brilliant in it's own way too

I found it very immersive back when i just started playing in VR. i placed a simple small fan infront of me, yes it's not realistic but people forget that alot of the feedback effects you feel through the wheel aren't realistic either. these are meant to enhance our other senses, we are sitting in a static chair after all (which isn't realistic). anything else that could involve other senses to feel something besides the feedback coming from the wheel will contribute to the immersion. wind helps to enhance the sense of speed, especially in VR

The endless rabbit hole of enjoying SIM racing is that your wallet is always empty!. In the past 2 years I have upgraded from a wooden homemade rig to an ALI profile rig, G27 wheel and pedals to CSL then SC2 hub, Heusenkveld pedals, Reverb for VR, from transducers to buttkicker, now with 3dof Qubic systems motion. Not to mention the expensive PC to drive it!. Now I am looking at the SRS hurricane system to add on. Performance wise, I got the most value from an hour of focussed practice!. $$$ only gets you the cues and subtlety of the feedback. Time on the track gets you how to use the cues. Iracing - keeping old blokes poor forever!.

I am old enough to remember people sarcastically claiming in the late 90s, that the "human eye can't detect frame rates differences above 24 fps". Yet here we are today, with gamers feeling 120 fps is not enough and going for 300 fps monitors - to get a more a convincing experience.... Wind effects will surely go the same route. Ridiculed at first, then ultimately accepted as an evidence

I have a full motion rig (SFX100) for motion, with a transducer for engine revs and 2 fan wind sim, and they all play their part to enhance my enjoyment and feeling in a sim (racing or flight). Ok, i tend to turn wind off when in a closed cockpit, but when in an open wheeler or open flight cockpit wind feels amazing (its just VERY loud though). For those complaining, a similar argument could be said for FFB on steering wheels. I don't feel my rear wheels break traction in my car steering wheel but do on my Accuforce etc.

You are very right, the more effects reach our body, the more our brain believes it, I think that I do not fit more things in the cockpit ... I have just received 16 motors, 2 arduino Uno and 4 adafruit controllers to put damping on the pedal board and a lot of vibration with the motors, I already have 6 100w bodyshakers on the pedal board and it already falls short, last month I put 2 servos on its back to notice the braking and I liked it more than expected, so I already asked for 2 more servos for G forces on the sides, this is trying and not stopping, whoever does not test cannot evaluate it, it is like explaining VR ... although I think you made it very clear.

Every single extra helps the immersion. I ride a lot and I’m used to wind even with a helmed because there’s no windows 😂 Fans simulating wind will help greatly and I think all the small things we can add that gives physical feedback will turn into something big together and improve our lap times
@lavir74
@lavir74 3 жыл бұрын
Actually no. The more you go for immersion and the more your lap times will suffer. Even VR is a detriment to really fast lap times (it can improve some aspects of driving so you can go faster in the beginning but after a while it actually impedes reducing lap times in a game). Either you go for immersion or you go for lap times, they are two different approaches to sim games, the former approaching the genre to represent as much as closely possible the feeling of driving a real car and the latter instead using every trick at your disposal in the game to go faster. Going fast has much more to do with playing a game (as a FPS) and learning the ins and out of how that game works (exactly as for every other game genre) than simulating the feeling of driving a car. You will never find an alien doing alien lap times with high torque, realistic break force setup pedals, motion rig, VR etc.; all those lap times are instead done by having as little feedback as possible just to keep the car stable and the looser setup you can have to have the least distractions as possible, coupled with using tricks in the game (that have usually nothing to do with how you really drive a real car in a track fast).
@YordanHristooov
@YordanHristooov 3 жыл бұрын
@@lavir74 well nills it’s alien and plays with a DD wheel right ? VR helps with laptimes as well. It’s so much easier to drive, look forward and gather for info for your brain. Too much immersion makes lap times suffer and I agree but not all of us are aliens right ? Decent ffb just gives you more data to work and be consistent. Alien laps time are done on them V3’s as well from the same guy. I understand what you are saying but we need a bit of both = immersion that it’s not overwhelming + decent lap times to have good battles with quick guys. I race after work and in a Sunday league because I work a lot and ride motorcycles a lot irl so immersion it’s fun for me
@lavir74
@lavir74 3 жыл бұрын
@@YordanHristooov Does Nills use VR or a motion rig too? No, he doesn't, and while he uses a DD wheel with good torque he still removes dynamic dampening that's the thing in ACC that actually simulate how real torque works in a GT3 car. As for VR, as I said it improves lap times in the beginning (since racing games actually try to simulate how cars behave and hence things that improve lap times in reality surely helps in improving lap times in a sim too), then you reach a plateau and are much faster without (because the more you simulate an actual car and the more the drawbacks of it come to the surface, without, however, the positives that a real car gives you in handling it). If real race car drivers could actually drive a car being detached from the sense of speed and the instinctual responses derived from it, if they could drive with a light steering without a dampening response, if they could drive without bumps, elevations, etc. actually influencing their driving, etc. etc. do you think they will go (much) faster or slower?

@@lavir74 I think VR it’s not for everybody and it’s better than monitors. You feeding your brain with more data for incoming corners. Less distractions will make them faster ofc but why you asking me this question ?
@lavir74
@lavir74 3 жыл бұрын
@@YordanHristooov As I repeat, in the beginning yes, it works like that but then, when you know the track fully in your own brain so that you don't even have to look at it to know when the apex is, when you know every single aspect of the track perfectly then VR becomes an obstacle instead. Why? Because the more immersed you become and the more the drawbacks that a real driver faces going fast you will have, as for example instinctual responses to the sense of speed. With a monitor you are fully detached from what's happening in front of you and you will not have such instinctual responses. As I've already said: if real car drivers could go without these things they would be much faster too, but in real car you cannot, in a game you can.

nice video, most race cars do have ventilation and sometimes it's clearly visible like the porsches giant tube aimed at the drivers helmet. have you used the buttkicker2 do you think it could work on a playseat challenge? I am very interested in your take! ^Perhaps a new video idea

They do and even road cars being used on track you would put the blowers on cold to keep your cool, albeit that has nothing to do with vehicle speed or direction! lol I'm sure you could bolt it on but folding it away might be an issue, I don't have one to try though and they are expensive! My choice is the Reckhorn transducers.

I would call it G force wind simulation. Interesting topic I didn't know about. Now I'd like to learn more. Can you do a video about how it works and how to set it up? Is it only compatible with certain games? Do you think it would translate well in flight sims?

I already have a review of the SRS Double Fan package including a setup guide mate, just search my channel :) It's compatible with all sims that have a telemetry data stream out, which they all do, even Forza 4 which isn't a sim does! :) Flight sim of course yes too :)

When I was driving on my mates PSVR, he rocked the chair back that I was sat in to simulate acceleration... then when I was braking, he shoved it forwards...hehe...
@kevinharkness2108

I adapted an old leather spring mechanism swivel/rocking chair to give me pitch, roll and slight yaw corresponding to my physical movements on the wheel and pedals. I achieved right/left roll by attaching a steel cylinder to the wooden base of the chair which sits on the floor and experimenting with angles. It took me a while to get right but now the chair rolls right/left when i turn the wheel right/left. The chair pitches forwards and backwards when i press and release the pedals simulating acceleration and braking. You need a fairly strong wheel and pedals to help achieve these movements (i have a Thrustmaster T-GT which is adequate, and strong pedal springs.) I place my wheel/pedals/shifter on a wheel stand pro in front of the chair and the immersion when playing gts Psvr at the nordschliffe goes to a new level and only for a couple of quid. The poor mans motion simulator!
@kevinharkness2108
@kevinharkness2108 3 жыл бұрын
Oh!...I also added small 20 watt vibration speakers to the wheel, pedals and shifter and placed a shiatsu massage pad on the chair which has built in compressing/deflating airbags which squeeze and release you when driving and simulating g forces (if you're not to discerning!) I also use vibration headphones and yes, a fan in front of me. Didn't mean to ramble on but hey, anything for a bit of immersion!

I’d love to try it someday but the experience doesn’t seem worth running more software and using up more USB ports for me. Really all I want is fresh air as VR gets so damn hot. I pieced together my own system that plugs in the wall and has a large dial to control the speed. It looks decent too. like it belongs in a race car. It’s really surprising nobody offers a sim racing specific fresh air system that simply plugs in the wall and requires no usb or software. Something with a control panel that looks like it belongs in a race car. I use the wind feature in SimVibe for my Buttkickers. It does a decent job simulating the speed of the car.

@@KarlGosling My racing sim alone has 4 button boxes, a wheel base, pedals, 3 shifters with a 4th shifter on the way, motion, trackball mouse, Stream Deck, keyboard, HP Reverb G2 and if I keep the DD2 most likely a Cube Controls wheel plugged in via USB. My flight sim has a Warthog HOTAS, rudder peddles, keyboard, mouse, soon to have a button box, flight yoke and motion. My regular gaming setup has the Oculus Rift CV1, keyboard, mouse, Track IR and Corsair iCue LS100. Of course not every thing is powered on all at once as I have each simulator plugged into a powered usb hub that I can switch off. Although some of it is still plugged in when simracing like the CV1 censors, gaming keyboards and mouse etc... The Z370 chipset only has so much bandwidth. I do have issues from time to time with USB devices. “wind simulation” isn’t exciting enough for me to add more devices at this point. Plus there’s the software and more wires. I’d probably love it though as immersion is my number one goal here. I’ve been wanting to build another pc just for sim racing but nothing I want is available. (5900x/RTX3090) It’s a combination that’s really hard to get a hold of.
