Another highly requested one for you guys today. Taken from "The Lord of the Rings" books by J.R.R.Tolkien, a sad, funeral song sung by Aragorn and Legolas for Boromir.

@@voose03 I think that’s wrong. Some tears come from fear, betrayal and abuse. Some tears are good though. Remembrance of a fallen friend and tears of joy.

This line was never in the Book HOWEVER it is one of many lines that was written for the movies that is so thoughtful and delivered so well on the movies that, to me at least, it fits the bill for something Tolkien himself would have written. Just another reason why the Jackson Trilogy is unrivaled.

When Sauron was faced with judgement for his actions, he fled rather than show that he truly felt remorse for his actions. When Boromir was faced with jdugement for his actions, he defended the hobbits with his life and died for it. That, to me, is the reason Boromir is loved despite his flaws, and it never matters that Sauron was once Mairon for centuries.

His flaws make him realistic and relatable. No real human is just a hero, every one of us has weak spots. Thats why we often like characters like Boromir the most and find inspiration in them.

As much as I love all the characters dearly.... Gimli is my number 1. Dwarf, (sorry), tough as hell etc etc (not enough time to say why). But Boromir such a very close second. I can relate to the father relationship, I love how he was flawed but by god he TRIED, he tried so freaking hard. And even when he hit the dirt, when he smashed into the bottom of the barrel, he leapt straight back up with all the heroics and all the power he had to muster. He OWNED that mistake. He admitted it with his dying breath, he spent the epic final moments his life trying to make it right and owning up to it. He took on the horde alone, he blew the horn of his forefathers that could summon aid from anywhere within the borders of his land, he walked into a rain of arrows until all strength left his mortal form. I have an incalculable amount of respect for Boromir's character for that. Sam is then my tight 3rd for anyone wondering lol.

Have you ever seen it, Aragorn? The White Tower of Ecthelion, glimmering like a spike of pearl and silver, its banners caught high in the morning breeze. Have you ever been called home by the clear ringing of silver trumpets? I have seen the White City, long ago . One day, our paths will lead us there. And the tower guard shall take up the call: "The Lords of Gondor have returned."

This scene always gets me as it is such an emotional scene in the mist of a fight. Boromir had pride for his kingdom, a pride that deep down, he wished Aragorn one day could feel.

Watching Boromir's story arc in the extended edition makes me cry even harder. Like he dies in the first movie; and it was sad, but then they give you all his family's backstory and twist the knife in your heart in the 2nd and 3rd movies.

Boromir's death was the hardest to deal with. He's introduced as a villain, almost an enemy to the fellowship and almost as soon as he redeems himself in the eyes of the reader/watcher he's taken from us, and he tried so hard to make a difference even as the third arrow struck him. This is a beautiful rendition of Lament for Boromir, thank you for bringing justice to his death.

@@yurachunt3179 extended edition does him and faramir justice. This is a hero, a man, flawed, weak, and broken. Who falls, rises, and raises his sword against the dark. Boldly waging war against the dark until he glimpses the dawn on the horizon. Aragorn could never have stood firm, unless boromir faltered, but still gave his life for his fellows. Boromir's redemption was Aragorn's rebirth.

Sean Bean's acting was so beautiful and so pure. You truly saw a man who cared so deeply for his people that he would have gladly sold his soul to save them. When he summons the strength from his very soul when a lesser man would lay down and die, Boromir *stood and fought*untill he literally had no more blood to bleed. In my deepest heart, I hope the Lords of Valinor gave Boromir's soul a place of honor.

I love how forgiving every member of the fellowship of the ring was when Boromir betrayed them. I just think Tolkein did a great job of portraying every aspect of evil- from Sauron (pure evil) and Saruman (greedy for power) to Boromir who did something wrong when faced with temptation due to circumstance, upbringing and the ambiguity of his situation- so much hinged on his decision and he failed as anyone could have but then he found his honour once more and every member of the fellowship acknowledged his good heart in the end

The rest of the fellowship didn’t even know he tried to take the ring. Only Frodo, Sam, and Aragorn knew. Aragorn did not tell the rest of the fellowship to keep boromir good in their eyes

Boromir is such a closely relatable soul. How terrified he must be of the forces of Mordor taking everything from him, his home, his kin. If you thought you could save all by claiming the ring for yourself, would you not?? I think a lot of people judge his character unfairly, if they were in his place, they'd be less noble than he, even in his weakest moment.

His brief temptation for power was shortly lived and a transgression he learned from. He was unafraid to cry and mourn with the hobbits and even demanded they be allowed a moment to grieve “for pity’s sake”. He was a compassionate man with courage and kindness to spare.

He is just a human. A proud and mighty warrior... he sees a weapon and he wants to use it. Plus the corruption of the ring. Aragorn in comparison is too perfect for a human.

Jess Caron Mordor is to the east, which is why they do not mention the east wind. It's associated with evil; having Gimli sing it would break custom, and would be sort of insulting to him as well. Though I gotta admit, it is a bit weird he didnt get a verse.

In fact, he does. He says the words about the East wind, after all. That's a kind of a finishing note of the funeral of Boromir. While Aragorn acts as a king-to-be, that is, also like a priest in a sense, Legolas and Gimli are his ministrants here. A moving and elaborate scene in the book.

What might have been (Rewritten from my original version to better match Tolkien's style, and modified to combine elements from the version that Riddle Maker posted): "From the Dark Lord's lands the East Wind blows Though Man heeds not its call . Its voice is steel, its tongue is fire Its tidings filled with gall . What news from the East, oh cursed wind, Do you bring to me at dawn? What news of Boromir the True Whose might has thus passed on? Isildur's Bane lay in your grasp, he alone barred the way. Though tempted by its power and might, From his path he would not stray. He stood alone against the Dark, to see our hope reborn And in his final dying breaths, reclaimed his oath forsworn. So blow, you wind of deathless Night, Your might shall stand no more! You soon shall fear the sacrifice of the Son of Denathor!"

@@atheistmando4976 to each their own. Personally I strongly dislike their music and some of the decisions they made, whilst loving their voices and vocal skill. I love their version of the Lonely Mountain song, as it uses Howard Shore's music, and dislike their version of Durin's song. The melody doesn't work for me, I prefer Eurielle's version for that reason.

When I read that scene, I threw my book at the wall, curled up in a sad, hopeless ball on my bed, and cried my eyes out, while cuddling a plushie wolf. It was a bit pathetic.

Boromir.....he truly carried his Country forward into Aragorn's hands and in the end, he had good intentions. Unlike Isildur who took the ring as a trophy or Gollum who was seduced upon seeing the ring, Boromir wanted to use the enemies own weapon against them, unfortunately the ring doesn't work that way. Rest in piece Boromir.

Jon Snow lives To be honest, he actually did what was logical. What chances did the Fellowship have? Very little. If I were him, I'd probably try to use ring to save my land and people too, not taking it right into the hands of the enemy.

Boromir is my favorite character in Tolkiens works, and I have read not only The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, but also The Silmarillion each at least once a year since I was 12. He is so often misunderstood, and not only that, _Boromir is absolutely essential to the story._ Without Boromir and his heroic sacrifice, the quest to destroy the ring would have failed utterly. He is the reason that Frodo finally see's the true nature of the ring and it's potential effects on the entire fellowship, even Aragorn. He is how Frodo knows that eventually the ring will corrupt the hearts and minds of all of them. He is also Aragorns inspiration to finally take up the call of his lineage and eventually become the king he was meant to be. This was portrayed so well in the movie too. There are many other reasons Boromir is essential to the story, but far more importantly: he is an example to us all in real life. How one so great can fall so far, and yet still redeem himself before the end. He is human, and fallible, even though he was already a hero, an inspiration and a strength for his people. If you think about the butterfly effect and the simple truth that we are all connected, we will never know just how important this literary character is to all of us who inhabit the Earth. _Heed the warnings in your own hearts, for at times we all are not ourselves._

Yes and no. Boromir does demonstrate to Frodo the Ring's power over the minds of the others of the Fellowship, but Frodo has already all but offered it to Aragorn at the Council of Elrond and Aragorn laughs it off. Aragorn's strength of will is a match even for Sauron, later demonstrated when Aragorn wrests control of the Palantir from him. He, like Faramir, could resist the Ring, and did. Boromir is not Aragorn's inspiration to seek his inheritance. It is always Aragorn's intention to claim the throne, and his doing so is the demand Elrond makes of him before he'll be allowed to marry Arwen, and Anduril is forged from the shards of Narsil before the Fellowship ever sets out from Rivendell in anticipation of his claiming the throne. IIRC he states several times that he will likely leave the Fellowship to journey to Minas Tirith, but after Moria and the fall of Gandalf he feels reluctant to abandon Frodo (which he only does knowing he will be of greater help to Merry and Pippin than to Frodo and Sam.)

Tolkien really had a penchant for creating these anti-heroes... Boromir is a deeply flawed figure yet one of the most beloved characters of LOTR fans. "Few have won such a victory..."

As a veteran with PTSD, this song hits me hard. It is exactly what I feel for those who are no longer here. I have listened to this a hundred times or more. Thank you for helping me find peace after war. Sh!t that kinda rhyrmed. F**K I need more bourbon.

I know there are already a ton of comments about Boromir being an amazing character but I just want to add. He was undeniably human. He wasn't pure by any means. He had resentment towards Aragorn (rightly so btw) and just a deep longing to help his people that Aragorn abandoned. The ring manipulated his desires. But he still had honour. He still had the bravery to give his life trying to redeem himself to those he'd betrayed. It just shows what humanity can do in my opinion. No one is free of temptation. And most people succumb to it. But just because you waver doesn't mean it's over. There is always reason to fight against it and do everything in your power to prove yourself better than your own darkness. I don't think any fictional character portrays that importance as much as Boromir

Despite my love for Clamavi De Profundis, this will always and forever be my definitive 'Lament for Boromir'. There is something that binds to your very being when a song/poem/story you hold in your mind is perfectly expressed by another in a way you didn't even know was possible - I feel the loss as if it were my own. Every time I listen to this track I'm shocked by the impact it has and I have listened to it a ridiculous number of times (why I can't find it on Spotify still baffles me). Finding a rendition of any song that matches or surpasses what you have in your own mind is amazing, and this just blows my mind in how perfect it is. Thank you!

Beautiful song and tribute to this great character. The first time I saw him die, I felt really bad, and it's always the case. Alone against an army, he died like a true warrior. Although he appears only in the first film, Boromir remains one of the most memorable characters of the trilogy and all the Tolkien universe. RIP, Son of the Gondor. :(

+Mathias Poupinais Actually, we do get some extended footage of Boromir in the Two Towers, and very briefly in The Return of the King. In TTT, we see him as Faramir thinks back to the day he left for Rivendell, and the relationship between the two brothers, and their father. In RotK, he only appears as a memory, a brief glimpse seen by either Denethor or Faramir (Cant remember which right now.) Sadly, these only showed up in the extended editions :(

Boromir is only a support act in Fellowship of the Rings, but it clearly carries through how heavy his burdens are in the real world ie. his world of Gondor. It also comes across how central his decision making process is for the betterment/survival of Gondor. Even when corrupted by the Ring, it's due to his love and duty for country. My favourite character from all of Tolkien's work, so conflicted, so brave and so courageous but ultimately just a man. He held Gondor together when Aragorn selfishly shirked his duty, and on his death bed recognised his King dutifully. I don't believe Peter Jackson does him justice, even if Sean Bean does. An amazing character, on every level, and we didn't even need a love interest to pull at our heart strings. Thank you so much for this.

Tsar Nicholas Yes Boromor is greatly misunderstood by the people, he actually represents the struggles and will of mankind against temptation and evil ... and greatest of all represents redemption and sacrifice. Also Aragorn did not selfishly shirk his duty, (In the books) he was a captain and champion of Gondor under the name Thorondor and brought great victories for Boromir's grandfather ... But he returned to North when his duties as Chieftain of the Arnor and a soldier against Sauron called.

Smellyfeet88 i think that it's mentioned that aragorn was know in gondor under a different name a few decades before the evends of the books (i mean, he's 80 years old at that point...) also, i think that boromir gets kind of shown in a bad light because everyone else resists the ring. gandalf, elrond, galadriel, are all really powerful and resist its influence. the hobbits are weak so it doesn't really call to them that much, but boromir is the only mere mortal man that's around it for that long, so he looks weak-willed in comparison to the elves and wizards.

Hearing this lament sung in a woman's voice makes it easy to imagine Boromir had a betrothed or lover waiting for him in Minas Tirith who sung this from the top of the White Tower of Ecthelion when he hadn't returned from the north after Denethor sent him off. I can picture her receiving the north wind's reply and just collapsing near the river as Boromir's horn appears floating to her to punctuate the North Wind's words.

there are a few details to these scene alone that every recent medieval series misses - caked nails, deep in dirt, bruised knuckles, torn and patched gloves. Things that would be expected after a battle, and things every other movie maker ommits. Everyone that helped their grandparents pick tomatoes at least once in their lives know those little details don't wash away, no matter how hard you scrub. And people ask me why i think the old movies were better...

One of the greatest characters in the Tolkien universe, Doesn't matter if it's the books or the movies, Boromir was truly a great character. Every time I watch the movies or read the books Boromir's death hits me hard, How he goes from refusing to acknowledge Aragorn as his King and then in his last minutes after he sacrifices his own life he accepts Aragorn as his King was just beautifully done, Not to mention he was by far one of the best warriors in Middle-Earth. Boromir was one of my favorite characters in this movie series. He was a bit rude to Aragorn during the concuil at Rivendell. One of my favorite parts was in the extended edition and they are still waiting to be admitted into Lothlorien and Boromir is sitting next to Frodo, who is still reeling from Gandalf's death and not talking and Boromir says "Gandalf's death was not in vain, nor would he have you give up hope. You carry a heavy burden, Frodo, don't carry the weight of the dead." Boromir fell hard from the temptation of the Ring, but he redeemed himself by protecting Mery and Pippin before they were captured, and then acknowelged Aragorn as his king.

This hits me hard (beautiful,) the first time I watched this scene in the theaters it reminded me of my own brother and I, he was my brother and my brother in arms. . To command is a burden within itself and the sorrow you carry when a brother you lose, it fills you much with deep sorrow and over time depression, etc. It might be sappy of me or just purely foolish to talk about my own history, but I just wanted to express that this movie and Aragon where big pieces in helping me overcome that grief, depression. I wish at that time I found this song/poem and to hear you sing this is just purely bliss!

Holy crap. The broken sword- he failed like Isildur, but Isildur's sword was saved and reforged whereas Boromir's was washed out to sea and his final words were "I have failed."

Jess Caron You are right. But is it really better ? Perhaps Tolkien means that Boromir's way shall be seen to lead to a dead.end. It's irksome that the films might mislead us in displacing points of interest. In the beginning of the film, Galadriels line of "I feel it in the water .... sniff it in the air" is taken from Threebeard. I have difficulty imagining the queen of Lothlorien sniffing away, so to day.

I have listened to your music for quite some time, and I am a fan of most all you do, your voice has a tone to it that brings an ethereal edge to these songs you seem making the sad, lamenting music resonate while the triumphant and happy seem to boom with power like a thunder crack, it is refreshing to hear your music and I would only say, "Thank you."

Oh, really? I just put it on loop and enjoy it four hours...Thats impossible on a phone however, unless theres a a way to loop on the phone? Anyway that's what hour and ten hour versions are for--I don't think theres a ten hour or even one hour version of this...can someone make one?

My god I am a huge fan of your music really, but this tops everything you did so far. The emotions in your voice make me tear up. It is very moving. I am a huge fan of the lyrics. You made them come to life in a unique way. You do so much justice to the material. Keep it up. I keep listening to it. Really you love all the shows, movies and books I enjoy, too.
