Greensleeves - Traditional Folk Ballad 1580
Arranged and Performed by Karliene Reynolds
Mixed by Nick Dawes www.mixing-mas...
- | LYRICS |-
Alas, my love, you do me wrong
To cast me off discourteously
For I have loved you well and long
Delighting in your company
Greensleeves was all my joy
Greensleeves was my delight
Greensleeves was my heart of gold
And who but my lady greensleeves
Your vows you've broken, like my heart
Oh, why did you so enrapture me?
Now I remain in a world apart
But my heart remains in captivity
Greensleeves was all my joy
Greensleeves was my delight
Greensleeves was my heart of gold
And who but my lady greensleeves
Ah, Greensleeves, now farewell, adieu
To God I pray to prosper thee
For I am still thy lover true
Come once again and love me
Greensleeves was all my joy
Greensleeves was my delight
Greensleeves was my heart of gold
And who but my lady greensleeves

She was the second wife of King Henry VIII and mother to the future Elizabeth I. The king fought the Church of England so he could divorce his first wife, Katherine of Aragon, to marry Anne after she continually turned down his advances and told him she would not be with him until they married. So he broke off from the church and created (if I remember this correctly) the Protestant faith and married Anne. She was crowned queen and Henry wanted a son but Anne was unable to give him one, so like the fat bastard he was, turned his attention elsewhere while Anne was charged with adultery, incest, and witchcraft three to four years after she was crowned. The king had her beheaded so he could move on to poor Jane Seymour and marry her. Elizabeth was only two when this happened, and I find it extremely ironic the heir he so desperately wanted ended up being her. Anne left a lasting mark on history long after her death, to rising as a queen to her forced downfall by the very man who tore everything apart to marry her. She lived on through Elizabeth who is remembered as one of England’s greatest monarchs.

During English listening assessments, our school used to play this song during the time for us to read the questions before the recordings started... now this song is forever connected to my memory of sitting among one of the many rows in a classroom, the fan overhead swinging to a rhythmic beat, the sound of paper being turned over, and my heart beating quickly, anticipating and also dreading the end of the song...

@@loveeveryone114 historians think this is just a rumor. Just a quick example from Wikipedia: "There is a persistent belief that Greensleeves was composed by Henry VIII for his lover and future queen consort Anne Boleyn.[5] Boleyn allegedly rejected King Henry's attempts to seduce her and this rejection may be referred to in the song when the writer's love "cast me off discourteously". However, the piece is based on an Italian style of composition that did not reach England until after Henry's death, making it more likely to be Elizabethan in origin." It's simply too old to know for sure. Don't spread misinformation.

He'd have hated it. He was insistent that only a man could be his successor, enough that to avoid having a female successor he made sure that all his female children were made bastards by law and ignored while any male bastards (born from mistresses and with no chance to inherit the throne) were all elevated to lordships and acknowledged. He treated his daughters like crap, so he would have probably been pissed that both daughters born from his most headstrong Queens/the Queens who had the most opportunity to stand up against his bullying (katherine due to age, law in her being his original queen, and having more experiance, ann because personality. Ann's death was used as a constant threat to other queens to not stand up for themselves) were the most successful. Both Mary and Elizabeth took their mothers fates less as a warning to not piss off henry, and more as an example of how to behave.

wiki Greensleeves" is a traditional English folk song. A broadside ballad by the name "A Newe Northen Dittye of ye Ladye Greene Sleves" was registered by Richard Jones at the London Stationer's Company in September 1580,[1][2] and the tune is found in several late-16th-century and early-17th-century sources, such as Ballet's MS Lute Book and Het Luitboek van Thysius, as well as various manuscripts preserved in the Seeley Historical Library in the University of Cambridge.

A favourite song of mine! As many covers I've heard, I love them all. Maybe it's because of composing, a music itself is perfecr. I could count by fingers how many pieces are that kind.

Brings me to the early 90's when playing Kings Quest on "my" 386. Learnt my first english words with that game: Look at carrot. "its a carrot." Pick up carrot "you picked up a carrot." Then smoothly walked across the screen like a boss towards the next adventure.

What a beautiful song on a tragic day that we all shall remember. Karliene I have been listing to you since you ever started! This is my first time saying anything to you. You have a wonderful voice! I also bought most of your music. I have followed you since the start. I am very pleased that your voice problem has gone away. (When you were singing Castermere.) Keep singing your heart out, because I LOVE your music!

Shakespeare references Greensleeves in his play The Merry Wives of Windsor (written c. 1597; first published in 1602). Mistress Ford refers twice to "the tune of 'Greensleeves'", and Falstaff later exclaims: Let the sky rain potatoes! Let it thunder to the tune of 'Greensleeves'! Queen Elizabeth the 1st was alive when this tune was famous and lived until 1603 so perhaps she saw that play, but she undoubtedly would have been familiar with the song.

I feel.. kinda weird listening to this song. The melody of it reminds me so much about something from my early childhood, but I can't remember, what that was, but I know that was something.. Maybe not important, but something as beautiful as that song to me. Maybe from some tale? I don't know. I don't know why, either, while hearing the very beginning without words, I feel like crying, it's giving me so many emotions like sadness, like longing, like loss of something, as if I've lost something important, but I can't even remember. I love this song so much, but I hate it at the same time, because it's hurting my heart without no reason.
