Karl Watson: Travel Documentaries

6 жыл бұрын

A crazy 4 day trip I went on to Norway, to learn polar expedition and survival skills in Finse, which was a Star Wars movie location for the planet Hoth in The Empire Strikes Back.
I was invited there by Shackleton Whisky, named after the legendary Antarctic explorer Ernest Shackleton.
Finse is where he and many others trained for their adventures, and our two teachers were Tim Jarvis and Baz Gray, modern day explorers whom in 2013 recreated Shackleton's Endurance trip.
Over the course of 2 days we were taught how to use snow shoes, cross country ski, go dog sledding, and then dug a snow hole for us to sleep in at night.
Buy Shackleton: Death Or Glory, the documentary of Tim and Baz's journey on DVD:

Iceland for me so far...was flying my drone in the far north as a blizzard came in and I lost all feeling in my hands. Got back in the car and they were completely blue! This was epic mate. The production quality felt like a step up for some reason...I think maybe it was the documentary/history element about Shackleton? I really liked that. Kind of grounded the whole expedition as the focal point. But also the drone shots and whoever else was helping you with the b-roll shots. Keep it up :)

illegal squat rave at in the basement of an abandoned chinese restaurant in bromley (south london) when i was a teenager. It was a freezing january and it got shut down by police in the early hours of the morning. waited for a bus for 45 mins with just a thin jacket on and a sweaty tshirt, got so cold me and a couple mates had to huddle in a phone box for warmth. Bus finally came and the bastard driver looks us dead in our eyes and keeps driving without stopping....back in the phone box.. it was a sorry sight.

Basically you need to go in the summer, unless you just want to do a hardcore winter kind of a trip, but you wouldn't be able to do the typical stuff like tours or hiking in the parks, etc. Winter comes very early there, by October or so (all depending on where, obviously it's a big state). I lived there for two years, went to university in Fairbanks and Juneau. I was there last summer working in Denali park. Highly recommend going there and getting out into the park (shuttle bus ride and go for a hike or do a backcountry trip). But of course there's a lot more to see. Depends whether you plan to rent a car or get around by buses and shuttles, which can be tricky because there aren't many of them. If you're feeling adventurous enough you can hitchhike, it works but might take a while. One thing to consider is hopping by ferry around the panhandle. The towns down there are pretty cool, including Juneau. Small and simple communities but they have that old-time Alaska feel to them. Also you could check out Tenakee hot springs. You can get there by ferry from Juneau. A tiny little town on an island with natural hot springs. And of course the Kenai peninsula has lots of great exploring. A lot to see in that state, good luck with the research.

lol we did this at school :P coldest experience i'v had is being out on the hardanger plateau in -32'C with a strong blizzard, on skis, sleeping in a hole i dug out of the snow and we just dug a ditch and had a BBQ :D then went to bed under the snow in nothing but my boxers in my sleeping bag. also, it's not so much a case of being unfit, you get less oxygen in your system because of the altitude, so you get winded easier, you can generally tell by dark circles around the eyes and breathing heavier and longer than normal. and looking at the clips seems to be the case, it takes about 2-4 days to get used to it and have your body produce more red blood cells. high sugar diets will help :)

More Karl Watson gold! The main thing I took away from this video was how much better and how much more alive you looked coming out of that snow hole on film than you did on your instagram story 😂😂 you looked like death that day my brother 🤙😨🙄

OMG... Never ever build a snow cave to sleep inn without a cold pit at the entrance. Build the sleeping area higher than the entrance. Cold Air will go down innto the pit and the warm air will rise. Any Norwegian knows this. Atleast they should know about that. It`s the key to survival. I`ve sleept inn snow holes for days without freezing even tho it was -30 outside.

What a awful thing to do voluntarily. I would k know. I've done it. Guess it was voluntarily. Red cross training. Except the hotel and the inside meals. Or a tent. Just a hole.
