The Karpov Caro-Kann is one of my favorite chess openings. It's strategically and positionally rich, it could get tactical quickly, and it leads to very instructive, imbalanced endgames.

The Karpov variation is one of those openings that requires deep strategic understanding rather than learning tons of theoretical variations. It leads to imbalanced positions in which both sides have several weaknesses, and in which there's multiple plans to play for for both sides.
This game was very thematic for the opening. I faced a 2400 rated opponent who'd lost a tempo in the opening by playing the unnecessary h3, other than that, we'd both followed main line theory as well as the most thematic ideas.
