Flossing is our most difficult snagging method up here. We use this snagging method in freshwater to protect our non-salmon species like our world class rainbow trout. Should we accidentally snag a trout, it doesn’t cause any more damage than a regular sport caught trout gets. Beautiful video and, most importantly, what a good puppy dog!!! Give that cutie-pie lots of treats and lovin’s!!

Flossing Sockeye is legal because they are plankton eaters and don’t bite conventional gear , most are harvested by netting.

Sockeye are plankton eaters in salt water and they stop eating once they enter fresh water. So the only way to catch sockeye is by nets in the ocean or snagging in fresh or salt water. Catching sockeye in the ocean is limited to commercial netting and shore dip netting for Alaska residents. (Search for Kenai dip netting. Very entertaining videos of life in Alaska.) The only way for a non-Alaskan to harvest sockeye is by snagging in salt or fresh water. This video shows the freshwater “flossing” technique (its an excellent method to protect our trout) but search for “Seward Sockeye Snagging” for a salt water version of this video. See how much different things are when you actually take the time to learn about something before commenting on it?

That’s how you fish for sockeye , It’s legal because they feed on plankton and don’t bite traditional gear !

@@Ruger44Carbine BS! The attempt is to floss the fish in such a way that it's hooked IN the mouth as the REGS stipulate! If they DIDN'T yank at the end of each drift, they would have hooked more LEGAL fish! This also has NOTHING to do with what sockeye feed on in the ocean! The "Kenai flip" technique was developed as a way for folks to HARVEST their limits quickly and then let others use the spot. None of this is sport fishing... it's meat fishing pure and simple.

Yep! And we're still dialing in our technique. There is a lot of conflicting advise out there, we're just trying to stay legal. We don't keep our accidentally snagged fish, only the one's we hook in the mouth!

The only way to catch sockeye is snagging or netting as they are plankton eaters in saltwater and they stop feeding once they enter freshwater. We do allow a limited set net and dip net saltwater fishery, but it’s for residents only. So the only way someone from out of state can catch a sockeye is to snag in fresh or salt water. Flossing is a fresh water snagging method that protects our non-salmon species by hooking in the mouth. Should we accidentally snag a rainbow trout, it’s no different than the effect of a sport fishing method. It’s so effective I’ve never seen a damaged trout much less a dead trout in over 2 decades of living up here. If you want to watch us really snag, search for Seward Sockeye Snagging. It’s a saltwater flat where we use weighted treble hooks. It’s also double the limit of freshwater so it’s a true meat harvest.
